In this work, the ablation behavior of monolith ZrB2-30 vol%SiC (Z30S) composites were studied under various oxy-acetylene flame angles. Typical oxidized microstructures (SiO2/SiC-depleted/ZrB2-SiC) were observed when the flame to Z30S was arranged vertically. However, formation of the outmost glassy SiO2 layer was hindered when the Z30S was tilted. The SiC-depleted region was fully exposed to air with reduced thickness when highly tilted. Traces of the ablated and island type SiO2 were observed at intermediate flame angles, which clearly verified the effect of flame angle on the ablation of the SiO2 layer. Furthermore, the observed maximum surface temperature of the Z30S gradually increased up to 2,200 ℃ proving that surface amorphous silica was continuously removed while monoclinic ZrO2 phase began to be exposed. A proposed ablation mechanism with respect to flame angles is discussed. This observation is expected to contribute to the design of complex-shaped UHTC applications for hypersonic vehicles and re-entry projectiles.
Lignin is compatible with various polymeric materials and useful as a carbon precursor. In this work, carbon monolith films were produced from polyacrylonitrile (PAN)@lignin precursor films by a controlled carbonization cycle. In addition, their morphological features, electrical properties, and adsorption behavior were analyzed and compared with those of carbonized PAN films. The successful formation of PAN@lignin precursor was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. SEM was used to examine the morphology of precursor and carbonized films, revealing that both precursor and carbonized films retained structural stability following carbonization. A trace of lignin in the carbonized films was also found. The pore structure of the carbonized PAN@lignin film was measured using the BET method, indicating the formation of fairly uniform pores. The electrical properties were also analyzed to obtain the Ohmic relation, which demonstrated that the electrical signal was influenced by incoming materials. Finally, the carbonized PAN@lignin films were useful as adsorbents to remove metal ions. This study provides important information for future initiatives in relevant research fields.

Modem drug discovery requires rapid pharmacokinetic evaluation of chemically diverse compounds for early candidate selection. This demands the development of analytical methods that offer high-throughput of samples. Naturally, liquid chromatography / tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is choice of the analytical method because of its superior sensitivity and selectivity. As a result of the short analysis time(typically 3-5min) by LC-MS/MS, sample preparation has become the rate- determining step in the whole analytical cycle. Consequently tremendous efforts are being made to speed up and automate this step. In a typical automated 96-well SPE(solid-phase extraction) procedure, plasma samples are transferred to the 96-well SPE plate, internal standard and aqueous buffer solutions are added and then vacuum is applied using the robotic liquid handling system. It takes only 20-90 min to process 96 samples by automated SPE and the analyst is physically occupied for only approximately 10 min. Recently, the ultra-high flow rate liquid chromatography (turbulent-flow chromatography)has sparked a huge interest for rapid and direct quantitation of drugs in plasma. There is no sample preparation except for sample aliquotting, internal standard addition and centrifugation. This type of analysis is achieved by using a small diameter column with a large particle size(30-5O ${\mu}$m) and a high flow rate, typically between 3-5 ml/min. Silica-based monolithic HPLC columns contain a novel chromatographic support in which the traditional particulate packing has been replaced with a single, continuous network (monolith) of pcrous silica. The main advantage of such a network is decreased backpressure due to macropores (2 ${\mu}$m) throughout the network. This allows high flow rates, and hence fast analyses that are unattainable with traditional particulate columns. The reduction of particle diameter in HPLC results in increased column efficiency. use of small particles (<2 urn), however, requires p.essu.es beyond the traditional 6,000 psi of conventional pumping devices. Instrumental development in recent years has resulted in pumping devices capable of handling the requirements of columns packed with small particles. The staggered parallel HPLC system consists of four fully independent binary HPLC pumps, a modified auto sampler, and a series of switching and selector valves all controlled by a single computer program. The system improves sample throughput without sacrificing chromatographic separation or data quality. Sample throughput can be increased nearly four-fold without requiring significant changes in current analytical procedures. The process of Bioanalytical Method Validation is required by the FDA to assess and verify the performance of a chronlatographic method prior to its application in sample analysis. The validation should address the selectivity, linearity, accuracy, precision and stability of the method. This presentation will provide all overview of the work required to accomplish a full validation and show how a chromatographic method is suitable for toxirokinetic sample analysis. A liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method developed to quantitate drug levels in dog plasma will be used as an example of tile process.
Nitrogen oxides (NO, $NO_2$ and $N_2O$) have been controlled effectively by the SCR catalysts coated on monolith or honeycomb in commercial sites with ammonia as reductant at high temperature range $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$. However, the catalytic filter has much merit on the point of controlling the particles and nitrogen oxides simultaneously. It will be more advanced-system if the catalytic working temperature is reduced to the normal filtration temperature of under $200^{\circ}C$. This study has focus on the development of the catalytic filter working at the low temperature. So the additive effect of the components such as Pt and Mn (which are known the catalytic component of $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ was investigated. The $V_2O_5-WO_3$ catalytic filter exhibited high activity and selectivity at $250{\sim}320^{\circ}C$ showing more than 95% NO conversion for the treatment of 600 ppm NO at face velocity 2 cm/s. The Pt-$V_2O_5-WO_3$ catalytic filter shifted the optimum working temperature towards the lower temperature ($170{\sim}200^{\circ}C$). And NO conversion was 100% and higher than that of $V_2O_5-WO_3$ catalyst at $250{\sim}320^{\circ}C$. The $MnO_X-V_2O_5-WO_3$ catalytic filter showed the wide temperature range of $220{\sim}330^{\circ}C$ for more than 95% NO conversion. This is a remarkable advantage when considered the $MnO_X$ catalytic filter presents the maximum activity at $150{\sim}250^{\circ}C$ and $V_2O_5-WO_3$ catalytic filter shows the maximum activity at $250{\sim}320^{\circ}C$.
$Si_{3}N_{4}$-BN based machinable ceramics were fabricated by hot-pressing at $1800^{\circ}C$ for 2 h under a pressure of 25 MPa. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and machinability were investigated. With increasing h-BN content from 5 vol% to 30 vol%, three point flexural strength decreased from 1000 MPa of monolithic S $i_3$$N_4$ to 720~400 MPa. The fracture toughness, $K_{IC}$ , was decreased from 7.6 MPaㆍ$m^{1/2}$ of monolithic S $i_3$$N_4$ to 6.5~4.1 MPaㆍ$m^{1/2}$. The grain size and aspect ratio of $\beta$-S $i_3$$N_4$ slightly decreased with increasing h-BN content. S $i_3$$N_4$ monolith could not be machined due to brittle fracture, but S $i_3$$N_4$-BN based machinable ceramics could be machined without fracture, showing excellent machinability. With increasing h-BN content, the thurst force during cutting and micro-drilling process was decreased.
The effect of h-BN content on microstructure, mechanical properties, and machinability of AlN-BN based machinable ceramics were investigated. The relative density of sintered compact decreased with increasing h-BN content. The four-point flexural strength also decreased from 238 MPa of monolith up to 182 MPa by the addition of 30 vol% h-BN. Both low Young's modulus and residual tensile stress, formed by the thermal expansion coefficient difference between AIN and h-BN, might cause the strength drop in AlN-BN composite. The crack deflection, and pull-out phenomena increased by the plate-like h-BN. However, the fracture toughness decreased with h-BN content. The second phases, consisted of YAG and ${\gamma}$-Al$_2$O$_3$, were formed by the reaction between Al$_2$O$_3$ and Y$_2$O$_3$. During end-milling process, feed and thrust forces measured for AlN-(10~30) vol% BN composites decreased with increasing h-BN particles, showing excellent machinability. Also, irrespective of h-BN content, relatively good surfaces with roughness less than 0.5 m (Ra) could be achieved within short lapping time.

In today's diversified society, it is hard to know which building style represents the architectural style of the time. The simplicity found in monolithic-style buildings forms a symmetrical point with fairly complex structure, and its value can be acknowledged. This study analyzes buildings made of insulating lightweight aggregate concrete in the early 21st century, defines the concept of monolithic expression, and examines how these characteristics are expressed in the space, forms, and structural methods in construction. Unlike a multi-layered exterior wall system, which features multiple layers composed of a variety of materials, the exterior walls built with insulating lightweight aggregate concrete comes in a lump form with a mold form that is tightly filled with concrete as a single material and is monolithic. This is attributed to the creation of spaces characterized by the homogeneity of inner and outer spaces with the use of the same material, continuity of the surface as solidity, spatial characteristics of the stereotomic construction, expression of materiality with the use of exposed concrete, and the contrast of the lump and the space. This not only reveals formal characteristics that expose a discourse about monolithic architecture in contemporary architecture but also provide an opportunity to extend the range of discussion to structures and materials and even to their effects on space.
In this study, synthesized Ni/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts were coated on the surface of honeycomb metalic monoliths to investigate catalytic activity in steam reforming of methane reactions. Supports with varying Ce/Zr ratios were synthesized to observe their behavior in the reforming reaction, and catalysts with Ni contents ranging from 5 wt% to 20 wt% were prepared to analyze the effect of Ni loading contents on catalytic activity. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, TPR, and SEM. The TPR analysis indicated the formation of Ni-Ce-Zr oxide with a strong interaction between the active metal Ni and CeO2-ZrO2 support. The 15 wt% Ni/Ce0.80Zr0.20O2 catalyst exhibited the highest activity and stability in the steam reforming of methane reaction. Catalysts with enhanced activity and stability were synthesized by manufacturing composite materials using excellent oxygen storage and donor properties of CeO2 and the thermal properties of ZrO2.
It is well known that root distribution of rice is a crucial factor for nutrient absorbtion and affect by soil fertility management. However, the findings on root distribution are limited due to laborious and tedious work. The characteristics of root distribution were investigated in long-term fertilizer experiment plots that were established in paddy soil, a fine silty family of typic Hal-paqueps (Pyeongtaeg series) in 1967. fertilizer experiment plots of no fertilizer, compost, NPK and NPK+compost plot have been maintained consistently for the past thirty six year and Npk+silicate plot for the past twenty two years. In NPK plot, 150kg N (urea), 100kg -$\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$ (fused phosphate) and 100kg $\textrm{K}_2\textrm{O}$(potassium chloride) per hectare have been applied. For NPK+silicate plot, 500kg $\textrm{Si}\textrm{O}_2$ (silicate) was applied in addition to fertilizer in NPK plot. For the compost plot, 10,000kg rice straw compost per hectare were applied. Root samples were taken from the positions of hill-center (below hill) and mid-point of four adjacent rice hills at heading stage by cylinder monolith (CM) method. The soil cores were sampled 20cm depth from the soil surface and partitioned four into layers at an interval of 5cm. The soil particles surrounding roots were washed out with tap water, Length and weight of the roots in each soil layer were measured and root length density (RLD), root weight density (RWD), specific root length(SRL) and rooting depth index (RDI) were calculated. Total root length was measured by intersection method. Plant height, tiller and shoot dry weight were the highest in NPK+compost plot. But RLD of hill-center soil cores was the highest in no-fertilizer plots. In the soil cores from mid-point position of four adjacent hills, RLD at 15-20cm soil depth was higher in compost plot than NPK plot. RLD in compost plots showed even distribution compared to those in chemical- fertilizer plots. RWD was the highest in the NPK+compost plot. SRL was the lowest in the NPK+silicate plot. RDI was the highest in the compost plot. Also, in this experiment it was found that the distribution of roots was closely related to the physical properties of the soil as affected by fertilization management.

This work investigated the plasma-catalytic decomposition of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and the behavior of the byproduct compounds over monolith-supported metal oxide catalysts. Iron oxide ($Fe_2O_3$) or copper oxide (CuO) was loaded on a monolithic porous ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ support, which was placed inside the coaxial electrodes of plasma reactor. The IPA decomposition efficiency itself hardly depended on the presence and type of metal oxides because the rate of plasma-induced decomposition was so fast, but the behavior of byproduct formation was largely affected by them. The concentrations of the unwanted byproducts, including acetone, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, methane, carbon monoxide, etc., were in order of $Fe_2O_3/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ < $CuO/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ < ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ from low to high. Under the condition (flow rate: $1L\;min^{-1}$; IPA concentration: 5,000 ppm; $O_2$ content: 10%; discharge power: 47 W), the selectivity towards $CO_2$ was about 40, 80 and 95% for ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, $CuO/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, respectively, indicating that $Fe_2O_3/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ is the most effective for plasma-catalytic oxidation of IPA. Unlike plasma-alone processes in which tar-like products formed from volatile organic compounds are deposited, the present plasma-catalyst hybrid system did not exhibit such a phenomenon, thus retaining the original catalytic activity.
