This study experimentally investigated the flexural capacity of a concrete beam reinforced with a newly developed GFRP bar that overcomes the lower modulus of elasticity and bond strength compared to a steel bar. The GFRP bar was fabricated by thermosetting a braided pultrusion process to form the outer fiber ribs. The mechanical properties of the modulus of elasticity and bond strength were enhanced compared with those of commercial GFRP bars. In the four-point bending test results, all specimens failed according to the intended failure mode due to flexural design in compliance with ACI 440.1R-15. The effects of the reinforcement ratio and concrete compressive strength were investigated. Equations from the code were used to predict the deflection, and they overestimated the deflection compared with the experimental results. A modified model using two coefficients was developed to provide much better predictive ability, even when the effective moment of inertia was less than the theoretical $I_{cr}$. The deformability of the test beams satisfied the specified value of 4.0 in compliance with CSA S6-10. A modified effective moment of inertia with two correction factors was proposed and it could provide much better predictability in prediction even at the effective moment of inertia less than that of theoretical cracked moment of inertia.
The paper presents an experimental and theoretical study on the influence of steel fibers and longitudinal tension and compression reinforcements on immediate and long-term deflections of high-strength concrete beams of 85 MPa (12,300 psi) compressive, strength. Test results of eighteen beams subjected to sustained load for 180 days show that the deflection behavior depends on the longitudinal tension and compression reinforcement ratios and fiber content; excessive amount of compression reinforcement and fibers may have an unfavorable effect on the long-term deflections. The beams having the ACI Code's minimum longitudinal tension reinforcement showed much higher time-dependent deflection to immediate deflection ratio, when compared with that of the beams having about 50 percent of the balanced tension reinforcement. The results of theoretical analysis of tested beams and those of a parametric study show that the influence of steel fibers in increasing the moment of inertia of cracked transformed sections is most pronounced in beams having small amount of longitudinal tension reinforcement.

Steel plate shear walls are recently used as efficient seismic lateral resisting systems. These lateral resistant structures are implemented to provide more strength, stiffness and ductility in limited space areas. In this study, the seismic behavior of the multi-story steel frames with steel plate shear walls are investigated for buildings with 4, 8, 12 and 16 stories using verified computational modeling platforms. Different number of steel moment bays with distinctive lengths are investigated to effectively determine the deflection amplification factor for low-rise and high-rise structures. Results showed that the dissipated energy in moment frames with steel plates are significantly related to the inside panel. It is shown that more than 50% of the dissipated energy under various ground motions is dissipated by the panel itself, and increasing the steel plate length leads to higher energy dissipation capability. The deflection amplification factor is studied in details for various verified parametric cases, and it is concluded that for a typical multi-story moment frame with steel plate shear walls, the amplification factor is 4.93 which is less than the recommended conservative values in the design codes. It is shown that the deflection amplification factor decreases if the height of the building increases, for which the frames with more than six stories would have less recommended deflection amplification factor. In addition, increasing the number of bays or decreasing the steel plate shear wall length leads to a reduction of the deflection amplification factor.
In this study, the behavior of a breasting dolphin with various dolphin heights and formations in the coastal area of Incheon was investigated. The dynamic deflection, shear stress, and moment of the pile were analyzed using the coefficient of the horizontal subgrade reaction that resulted from loading tests of different DWT (Dead Weight Tonnage). In the case of a vertical pile type dolphin, the deflection, shear stress, and moment increased as the dolphin height increased. In the case of the battered pile type dolphin, small values of shear stress and moment were shown at a low dolphin height, and the characteristics of the dynamic behavior of the dolphin showed that the deflection, shear stress, and moment increased as the pile slope of the dolphin decreased or the DWT increased.
The large deflection theory of the Mindlin plate and Galerkin's method are employed to examine the static responses of a plate produced by the weight of the plate, and the dynamic responses of the plate caused by the coupling effect of these static responses with a set of moving forces. Results obtained by the large deflection theory are compared with those by the small deflection theory. The results indicate that the effect of weight of the plate increases the modal frequencies of the structure. The deviations of dynamic transverse deflection and of dynamic bending moment produced by a moving concentrated force between the two theories are significant for a thin plate with a large area. Both dynamic transverse deflection and dynamic bending moment obtained by the Mindlin plate theory are greater than those by the classical plate.
For reinforced concrete column under sustained loads, the member suffers additional lateral deflection due to creep. This deflection leads to additional bending in the member, which in turn causes the column to deflect still further. Therefore the secondary moment due to additional deflection causes an increase in primary moment and the strength of column is reduced. And also creep buckling may occur. On this study, nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete long column including crack effects is carried out and then the strength of long column is revaluated.
The chloride attack of the top mat of reinforcing bars is a major cause of deterioration of comcrete deck of plate girder bridges. This is caused by a current design method which requires a top mat of reinforcing bars to resist a negative bending moment in bridge decks. In recently, empirical evidence has indicated that the top transverse reinforcing bars can patially or fully be eliminated without jeopardizing the structural integrity of a deck. So, one of the most efficient way to increase durability of concrete deck of bridges is the development of new design method that reduce or eliminate the top mat reinforcing bars, mad it is possible by the exact analysis that considering the negative bending moment reducing effect which introduced by relative deflection of plate girders. In this study, we develop the new bridge deck analysis method that considered the effect of relative girder deflection by applying the principles of slope deflection method of frames, and that is fine tuned with results of finite element analysis. This new approach evaluate a bending moment in a deck based on the effect of relative girder deflection as well as the magnitude of wheel loads, the girder spacing and stiffness, deck stiffness and the span length
This paper presents the dynamic behaviour of a simple beam subjected to moving loads and prebending moments. The velocity of the moving loads is assumed constant, and the prebending moment is assumed to be M. The fundamental equation of motion of the beam is derived from the principle of virtual works and solved by using Duhamel's Integral. In this paper we found that the dimensionless deflection at the middle of beam was related with prebending moment(M), velocity(V) and magnitude of the moving load(F) ; that is y/y$_{0}$=1/1-.betha.$^{2}$-.pi.M/Fl The faster the velocity becomes, the deeper the maximum deflection becomes. And the maximum deflection at the middle of beam was occurred after the moving load passed the midpoint of beam.
Nine tests to failure are performed on full-scale eight composite beams with unreinforced web opening having ribbed slabs with formed deck which are perpendicular to the steel section and one steel beam. The effects of slab width, reinforcing of stud, moving of rib, moment-shear ratio are studied. At the low M/V ratio, Vierendeel action around the high moment end of the opening is occurred and the large deflection across the opening and transverse cracking are occurred with increasing of applied load. As the M/V ratio increases, the relative deflection across the opening decreases. And at failure, full tensile strain are occurred at bottom T section of steel beam, and concrete crushes at the High Moment End of the opening. With narrow slabs, diagonal tension failure at the high moment end of the opening is occurred. And with wide slabs, rib punch-through failure is occurred near the high moment end of the opening. The implications for design are discussed.
