This work presents an optimality criteria method applicable io the design of plane frames with I-shape sections. All kinds of constraints are treated properly to ensure the mathematical rigour of the method as ever. Among the various properties of a section, the cross-sectional area is chosen as the design variable associated with the member. Then other properties, moment of inertia and depth, are determined from the cross-sectional area using relationships established in advance from the sectional data for AISC standard W shapes. The optimality criteria established in this work is perfect in mathematical terms provided that the relationships between properties of a section are correct. A redesign algorithm is derived relying heavily on the Newton-Raphson method to solve the system of nonlinear constraint equations. A worked example is also Presented.

This paper addresses the dynamic modeling and closed-loop eigenvibration analysis of composite rotating pretwisted fan blade modeled as non-uniform thin-walled beam with bi-convex cross-section fixed at the certain presetting angle and incorporating piezoelectric induced damping capabilities. The blade model incorporates non-classical features such as transverse shear, rotary inertia and includes the centrifugal and Coriolis force field. A velocity feedback control law relating the piezoelectiriccally induced transversal bending moment at the beam tip with the appropriately selected kinematical response quantity is used and the beneficial effects upon the closed loop eigenvibration of the blade are highlighted.

This paper deals with the static optimal shapes of simple beams which are subjected to a vertical point load. The area and second moment of inertia of the regular polygon cross-section of the tapered beams are determined, which have always same volume and same length for the parabolic taper. The differential equation governing the elastic curve is derived using the small deflection theory and solved numerically. By using the numerical results of deflections, rotations and bending stresses of such beams, the optimal shapes, namely, optimal section ratios, of the beams subjected to a single point load according to variation of load position parameters are determined and presented in the figures. Examples of the static optimal shapes for beams with a single load and multiple loads are reported. The design process of this study can be used directly for the minimum weight design of simple beams.

This paper introduces the structural design optimization of a high speed machining center using multi-step optimization combined with G.A.(Genetic Algorithm) and Weighted Method. In this case, the design problem is to find out the best design variables which minimize the static compliance, the dynamic compliance, and the weight of the machine structure simultaneously. Dimensional thicknesses of the thirteen structural members of the machine structure are adopted as design variables. The first step is the cross-section configuration optimization, in which the area moment of inertia of the cross-section for each structural member is maximized while its area is kept constant The second step is a static design optimization, In which the static compliance and the weight of the machine structure are minimized under some dimensional and safety constraints. The third step IS a dynamic design optimization, where the dynamic compliance and the structure weight are minimized under the same constraints. After optunization, static and dynamic compliances were reduced to 62.3% and 95.7% Eorn the initial design, while the weight of the moving bodies are also in the feaslble range.
This paper presents the results of an analytical investigation pertaining to the elastic local buckling behavior of asymmetric edge stiffened orthotropic open section structural member under uniform compression. The asymmetric edge stiffener is considered as a beam element neglecting its torsional rigidity. We suggested the analytical model of asymmetric edge stiffeners which is composed of a strip of flange plate, equal width of edge stiffener, and a plate attached at the flange end, and computed the moment of inertia of the stiffener about an axis through the centroid of the ensuing cross-section. Using the derived equation, the local buckling coefficients of asymmetrically edge stiffened orhtotropic I-section columns are predicted and the results are presented in a graphical form.
This study was aimed to develop the knot quantification method to predict bending strength, using x-ray scanner. The bending strength prediction model was proposed in this paper. The model was based on Knot Depth Ratio (KDR) and closely-spaced knot was taken into account. The previous paper reported that KDR is the ratio of the knot and transit zone to the lumber thickness. Even though KDR involves transit zone, it was verified that the ratio of the moment of inertia for knot to gross cross section ($I_k/I_g$) based on KDR was a good predictor for bending strength of lumber. To take closely-spaced knot into account, a projection method was also proposed. This projection method improved the predictive accuracy significantly. It showed coefficient of determinant of 0.65 and root mean square error (RMSE) of 9.17.

In this study, some structural analysis using 3D CAD data, material properties, load conditions and boundary conditions are carried out to evaluate structural stability of the multi-aerial platform for high-rise fire fighting and rescue. We conduct structural analysis for the upper structures such as turn table, booms and basket, by using a universal structural analysis program NASTRAN. As the results, there is local stress exceeding the yield strength, but it is able to relax stress concentration in a way such as changing thickness of the structure or making larger inertia moment in cross section of booms.

In general, the effects of steel ribs are not considered in the numerical analysis of tunnel design. However, attempts have been increased recently to consider these effects in the analysis of shallow tunnels in soft ground, based on the fact that the steel ribs embedded in the shotcrete take a role to support some portion of the redistributed load due to excavation. In such analyses, the steel ribs can be considered in four different methods: (1) a conventional method where the steel ribs are not considered, (2) a method using the equivalent composite cross section in which the bending moment of shotcrete is not considered, (3) a method using the equivalent composite cross section in which both the compressive stress and the bending moment for the shotcrete and steel rib are considered, and (4) a method using beam elements for the shotcrete and the steel rib, respectively. These methods are adopted in the numerical analysis using FLAC 2D to investigate stresses of both the shotcrete and the steel rib. The overall results show that the analyses are more practical and economical when the effects of steel rib are considered fer the methods (2), (3), and (4). Since the results of those analyses considering steel rib capacity may be different according to the ground condition, it will be necessary to consider the appropriate method among them in accordance with design conditions.
To determine how closely related to field lodging for several characters affecting the field lodging for several characters affecting field lodging, and to obtain the basic information for selection of lodging resistance genotype, an experiment was conducted with 10 varieties from May to Oct., 1990 at the experimental field in Sunchon Xational University. Culm length, dry weight per unit culm length (W/1), bending moment per unit culm diameter (W1/d), lodging index (L), bending load ratio (W1/P), and index of critical lodging load(W$_{s}$$^{2}$/1$^4$) were the most closely related characters to field lodging. Culm length showed highly significant positive correlation coefficient with field lodging(r=0.7607), but it may be undesirable to judge lodging resistance of genotype by culm length itself without consideration of culm stiffness. Considering the difficulty and time-consuming to measure the character, clum length, W/1, W1/d, and W$_{s}$$^{2}$/1$^4$ were easy to measure and hence would be the most useful variables to judge the lodging resistance of genotype. Culm diameter, cross sectional area of culm, thickness of culm wall, and the second inertia moment of cross section of culm were not correlated with field lodging at all. Breaking strength of culm showed significantly negative correlation coefficient (r=-0.3986) with field lodging.ing.

The lead frame manufactured by stamping process plays an important role in connecting semiconductor to PCB board. As a result of the miniaturization of semiconductor, its corresponding lead frame punch has been narrow. In case of the punch with high slenderness ratio such as lead frame punch, the punch can be broken suddenly due to buckling. To prevent the fracture of lead frame punch, some manufacturers have experientially attached stiffeners to weak parts of punch. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to suggest the guideline far design of stiffened punch. The optimal position and the number of stiffeners to be attached to punch are investigated by elastic buckling analysis. The elastic buckling analysis consists of the eigenvalue buckling analysis and nonlinear buckling analysis. The critical buckling load of elastic buckling analysis is compared with that of buckling test. Finally, the guideline far attaching stiffeners is suggested through analysis of cross section of lead frame punch such as moment of inertia and eccentricity.
