  • To investigate the corrosion behavior of the clay-bonded kaolin chamotte by molten aluminum, the mixture of 20 wt% fire clay and 80 wt% kaolin chamotte was prepared and fired in the temperature range 900~120$0^{\circ}C$. The specimens fired at each temperature were reacted with molten aluminum at 90$0^{\circ}C$. The results obtained in this experiment are as followed. 1) It was confirmed through X-ray diffraction analysis that the clay-bonded kaolin chamotte exposed to molten aluminum suffered penetration by the reaction of aluminum with silica forming alumina and metallic silicon. 2) Penetration was independent whether the silica existed as free or one component of mullite. 3) Penetration of the specimen fired at 90$0^{\circ}C$ was negligible while the others fired above 100$0^{\circ}C$ showed remarkable penetration. 4) Penetration rate at 90$0^{\circ}C$ was parabolically increased with the holding time as in the case of metal oxidation.

  • An attempt was made to study wetting behavior of various low temperature molten frist on ceramic substrates including high alumina silicon carbide and porous fired clay plates by Sessile-drop method. The cosine values of contact angles between substrates and molten frist were linear as a function of temperature unless chemical reactions between substrate and molten frit occured. Addition of BaO to frit composition indicated that cosine of values of contact angles were gradually increased with increasing temperature but in the frist contained $Li_2O$ consine values were abruptly increased with increasing temperature after reached a certain temperature. The contact angle increased with increasing roughness of the substrate surface in case of alumina substrate plate.

  • Medium carbon steel was aluminized by hot dipping into molten Al or Al-1%Si baths. After hot-dipping in these baths, a thin Al-rich topcoat and a thick alloy layer rich in $Al_5Fe_2$ formed on the surface. A small a mount of FeAl and $Al_3Fe$ was incorporated in the alloy layer. Silicon from the Al-1%Si bath was uniformly distributed throughout the entire coating. The hot dipping increased the microhardness of the steel by about 8 times. Heating at $700-1000^{\circ}C$ however decreased the microhardness through interdiffusion between the coating and the substrate. The oxidation at $700-1000^{\circ}C$ in air formed a thin protective ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ layer, which provided good oxidation resistance. Silicon was oxidized to amorphous silica, exhibiting a glassy oxide surface.

  • Reaction bonded silicon carbide (RBSC) composite for heat-exchanger was fabricated by molten Si infiltration method. For enforcing fracture toughness to reaction bonded silicon carbide composite, the surface of carbon fiber has coating layer by SiC or pyro-carbon. For SiC layer coating, CVD method was used. And for carbon layer coating, the phenol resin was used. In the case of carbon layer coating, fracture toughness and fracture strength were enhancing to 4.4 $MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and 279 MPa.

  • Reaction bonded silicon carbide(RBSC) composite for heat-exchanger was fabricated by molten Si infiltration method. The raw materials with variable particle sizes were used in this experience. The finer the particle size in sintered silicon carbide was the more increasing 3-point bending strength and fracture toughness. As the adaptable particle sizes had been occupied interstice arising from packing sample, the mechanical properties were increased. In the PCS1-1 sample, the 3-point bending strength and fracture toughness were 323MPa and $4.9\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.

  • A porous reaction bonded silicon carbide (RBSC) was fabricated by a molten Si infiltration method. The porosity and flexural strength of porous RBSC fabricated in this study were dependent upon the amount of carbon source used in the SiC/carbon preform as well as the amount of Si infiltrated into the SiC/carbon preform. The porosity and flexural strength of porous RBSC were in the range of $20 vo1.{\sim}49 vo1.%$ and $38{\sim}61 MPa$, respectively. With increase of carbon contents and molten Si for infiltration, volume fraction of the pores was gradually decreased, and flexural strength was increased. The porous RBSCs fabricated with the same amount of molten Si show less residual Si around neck with increase of carbon source, as well as a new SiC was formed around neck which resulted in the decreased porosity and improvement of the flexural strength. In addition, decrease of the porosity and increase of the flexural strength were also obtained by increase of the amount of molten Si with the same amount of carbon source. However, it was found that the flexural strength of porous RBSC depends on the porosity rather than the amount of the newly formed SiC in neck phase between SiC particles used as a starting material.

  • We have implemented a RTA system using W-halogen lamps and tried to recrystallize the phosphorus ion implanted amorphous silicon on insultor (SOI) taking advantages of seeding window. The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of a typical crystalline orientation occurred during the solidifying process of molten amorphous silicon layer. Experimental results show that several twin boundaries are found on the seeding window region after annealing for 15 sec at 1040\ulcorner. These twin boundaries represent that the recrystallization is partialy possible and when the annealing is done at 1150\ulcorner, (100) etch pits with <110> facets are found on the solidified amorphous silicon layer. Consequently, Hall mobility of recrystallized silicon film is measured and the thermal behavior of grain boundary is also observed by SEM.

  • The effects of silane coupling agents on the injection molding process were investigated using silicone nitride mixtrues with a binder system containing polypropylene as a major binder (55vol% solid loading). The formation of bonding between silicon nitride powder and coupling agents was confirmed through the analyses of powder surface. The use of coupling agents improved mixing characteristics judged by the torque change during mixing process. the coupling agents also reduced molten viscosity of the mixture considerably, which is a main factor to determine the flow of the mixture. However, the bonding between coupling agents and polymers had a negative effect on the debinding process by retarding the thermal decomposition.

  • It was found that colloidal silica sprayed to the galvanized steel sheet apparently made the molten zinc layer solidified to be the randomly oriented fine grains. Its spraying effect was also little affected by steel temperature that had been considered as one of the major operating factors in this process. From the results of surface analysis, it is considered that aluminum dissolved in coating layer reduces silica to silicon by the oxidation-reduction reaction, and that the reduced silicon acts as a more effective nucleus in solidification reaction than phosphate salt, siica and alumina.

  • Sapphire fiber has been used to provide an optical path for the total radiation pyrometry. In measuring the temperature, we use the two-color detector, which consists of a high-performance Silicon detector mounted in a "sandwich" configuration over a Germanium detector. Sapphire fiber can withstand high temperature in the molten steel for two and a half hours. The maximum value of the error is the $\pm$2.5$^{\circ}C$ in the range of 152$0^{\circ}C$~1$600^{\circ}C$. This paper presents the simple scheme for measuring the molten steel temperature in the blast furnace of the iron & steel making process.g process.
