Dielectric and piezoelectric properties of PZT-polymer 3-3 type composite for ultrasonic transducer applications (초음파 트랜스듀서용 PZT-고분자 3-3형 복합압전체의 유전 및 압전특성)

  • PZT powders were prepared by the molten salt synthesis method. The porous PZT ceramics were made from a mixture of PZT and polyvinylalcohol(PVA) by BURPS(Bumout Plastic Sphere) technique. The 3-3 type composites were fabricated by impregnating an sintered porous PZT ceramics with various polymer matrices. The relative permittivity of 3-3 type composite specimens was shown 860-1,100 smaller than that of solid PZT ceramics(2,100), and the dissipation factors of composite specimens were about 0.02 to 0.03. The piezoelectric coefficient d$_{33}$ of composite specimens(285-328*10$^{12}$ C/N) was comparable with that of single phase PZT specimens(364*10$^{-12}$ C/N). The thickness mode coupling factor k$_{t}$(O.5-0.6) of composite specimens was comparable with that of single phase PZT specimens(k$_{t}$-0.7), and the mechanical quality factor of composite specimens was smaller than 10, and thus these 3-3 type composite specimens would be believed as a good candidates for broad band transducer applications.ons.

  • PZT powders were prepared by the molten salt synthesis method. The porous PZT ceramics were made from a mixture of PZT and polyvinylalcohol(PVA) by BURPS(Burnout Plastic Sphere) technique. The porous PZT bodies were fabricated from the green compacts with various amounts of PVA spheres. The piezoelectric coefficient d$_{33}$ (334~350*10$^{-12}$ C/N)of porous PZT ceramics(364*10$^{-12}$ C/N). The figure of merit(d$_{h}$g$_{h}$) of porous PZT specimens evaluating the sensitivity for ultrasonic transducer applications was improved significantly(11~70times) in comparison with that of single phase PZT ceramics(100*10$^{-15}$ m$^{2}$/N). The thickness mode coupling factor k$_{t}$(0.5~0.6) of porous specimens was comparable with that of single phase PZT ceramics(k$_{t}$=0.7). The mechanical quality factor of porous PZT specimens was smaller than 10, and thus these porous PZT ceramics would be believed as a good candidate for broad band hydrophone applications.   • The pulse-echo response of the piezoceramics PZT-polymer 3-3 type composite transducers with various PVA additions were investigated. The PZT powder was prepared by the molten salt synthesis method. The porous PZT specimens will be used as a filler to make 3-3 type comosite were prepared from a mixture of PZT and polyvinylalcohol(PVA) sphere by utilizing BURPS(Bumout Plastic Sphere) technique. It was shown that the transmitting and receiving sensitivity of 3-3 type piezoelectric composite transducers could be improved than that of solid PZT transducers. The reason is that 3-3 type piezoelectric composite have low dielectric constant, density and acoustic impedance. The distance between transducer and reflector was in good agreement with the distance calculated from the longitudinal velocity of the specimens and receiving time observed pulse-echo responses on the ultrasonic transducer analyzer.

  • [ $0.6Pb(Sc_{1/2}Ta_{1/2})O_3-0.4PbTiO_3$ ] (hereafter PSTT) ceramics were prepared by the molten salt synthesis (MSS) method using KCI as a flux. Formation of perovskite phase was investigated by a differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis in the temperature range from $600^{\circ}C$ to $850^{\circ}C$. A 92% perovskite phase was synthesized at $750^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs using the MSS method, while 82% perovskite phase was synthesized at $850^{\circ}C$ for 4ks using the calcining of mixed oxide (CMO) method. This result could be due to the improvement in reactivity of $Sc_2O_3$ by melting of KCI. The MSS specimen sintered at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 4hrs showed a dielectric constant of 11,200, a remnant polarization of $13.5{\mu}C/cm^2$ and a coercive field of 10.198 kV/cm, which was discussed in view of the microstructure.

  • Li-doped NiO was synthesized by molten salt method. $LiNO_3$-LiOH flux was used as a source for Li doping. $NiCl_2$ was added to the molten Li flux and then processed to make the Li-doped NiO material. Li:Ni ratios were maintained from 5:1 to 30:1 during the synthetic procedure and the Li doping amount of synthesized materials were found between 0.086-0.190 as a Li ion to Ni ion ratio. Li doping did not change the basic cubic structural characteristics of NiO as evidenced by XRD studies, however the lattice parameter decreased from 0.41769nm in pure NiO to 0.41271nm as Li doping amount increased. Hydrogen gas sensors were fabricated using these materials as thick films on alumina substrates. The half surface of each sensor was coated with the Pt catalyst. The sensor when exposed to the hydrogen gas blended in air, heated up the catalytic surface leaving rest half surface (without catalyst) cold. The thermoelectric voltage thus built up along the hot and cold surface of the Li-doped NiO made the basis for detecting hydrogen gas. The linearity of the voltage signal vs $H_2$ concentration was checked up to 4% of $H_2$ in air (as higher concentrations above 4.65% are explosive in air) using Li doped NiO of Li ion/Ni ion=0.111 as the sensor material. The response time T90 and the recovery time RT90 were less than 25 sec. There was minimum interference of other gases and hence $H_2$ gas can easily be detected.

  • In this study, 1-3 type composite specimens were fabricated with PZT powders prepared by the molten-salt synthesis method and Eccogel polymer matrix. A virtual level-meter was fabricated with a 1-3 type composite probe and electronic unit for underwater application. There was no difference in values between a virtual and measured level on its level meter.

  • Characteristics of the sol-gel derived (Ba1-xPbx)TiO3 powders are compared with those of powders prepared by the calcining ofmixed oxides method (CMO) and molten salt synthesis method(MSS). The sol-gel derived powder has a higher surface area (50$m^2$/g) than those of CMO(3.8$m^2$/g) and MSS(11.5$m^2$/g) derived powders. In the sol-gel method, the (Ba1-xPbx)TiO3 was synthesized at $600^{\circ}C$ for 1hr, indicating that this method has a crystalline temperature 20$0^{\circ}C$-30$0^{\circ}C$ lowr than those of the CMO and MSS methods.

  • Magnesium secondary batteries are attracting much attention due to their potential to replace conventionally used lithium ion batteries. Magnesium secondary battery cathode material Mo6S8 were synthesized by molten salt synthesis method and PVC as a carbon materials were added to improve electrochemical properties. Crystal structure, size and surface of the synthesized anode materials were measured through XRD and SEM. Charge-discharge profiles and rate capabilities were measured by battery test system. 2.81 wt% PVC coated sample showed the best rate capabilities of 85.8 mAh/g at 0.125 C-rate, 69.2 mAh/g at 0.5 C-rate, and 60.5 mAh/g at 1 C-rate.

  • $xPb(Fe_{1/2}Nb_{1/2})O_3 - (1 - x)Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$ powders were synthesized by the molten salt synthesis method using the NaC!- KCI flux with 1 : 1 molar ratio, and their powders and dielectric properties were investigated. The synthesized powders showed less agglomerated shape with the average particle size of less than $2 \mu\textrm{m}$. The composition $x0.3Pb(Fe_{1/2}Nb_{1/2})O_3-0.7Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$ could be sintered at $1000{\times}C$ and its dielectric constnat was over 11, 000.

  • Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 was prepared by the molten salt synthesis method using an equimolar mixture of NaCl-KCl. Initial particle size could be controlled by varying the weight ratio of the NaCl-KCl to raw materials from 0.1 to 1.0, and the initial particle size effects on the sintering and dielectric properties of Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 were investigated at the sintering temperature range from 90$0^{\circ}C$ to 105$0^{\circ}C$. As the weight ratio of salt increased, the average particle size decreased and the particle size distributions tended to narrow. As the initial particle size decreased, the linear shrinkage and density increased due to the promotion of densification. Dielectric constant increased with decreasing the initial particle size resulting from the increase of density and grain size.
