Mrthylov~orits sp. starin SSl, a restricted facultative methylotrophic bacterium. growing on methanol was found to produce small amount of extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) under the optimal growth conditions, while it produced large amount of the polysaccharide under nitrogen limihtion. The optimal ratio of carbon to nitrogen for EPS production were found to be 5.2. The optimal temperature and pH for EPS production were 30^{\circ}C.$ and 6.5, spectively. The EPS consisted of carbohydrate, protein and small amount pyruvic acid. The reducing sugars in the EPS consisted mainly of glucose and a small amount of mannose. The EP!; treated with ethanol (EPSae) was found to have several properties different from those of the EPS which was not treated with ethanol (EPSbe); the EPSae contained no pyruvic acid. It also contained less protein and showed much lower viscosity than the EPSbe. The viscosity of EPSbe was very sensitive to NaCl and decreased t;harply upon exposure of the polysaccharide to even 0.5% (wiv) NaCl solution. The viscosity, however, was increased irreversibly upon exposure of the saccharide to high temperature. The molecular weight of EPS was estimiited to be $2.5{\times}$10^6$ - $3.5{\times}*$10^6$ using Sepharose hB column chromatography. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the lyophilized EPSbe and EPSae have a structure of thread-like fibers and a mesh-like structure resembling bee-hive, respectively.
The extracellular adenine deaminase from Nocardioides sp. J-275L was purified by the following techniques: ammonium sulfate fractionation, DEAE-Cellulose, DEAE-Sephadex A-50 column chromatography, and Sephacryl S-200 superfine gel filtration. The enzyme was partially purified about 3889.5-fold with about 5.2% yield by these procedures. The molecular weight of the enzyme was 39,000 by a calibrated Sephacryl S-200 superfine column chromatography. The enzyme was stable at pH 7.5 and up to $40^{\circ}C$. Glycerol was effective on the stabilization of the enzyme during storage. The optimum pH and temperature of the enzyme were around pH 7.5 and $40^{\circ}C$, respectively. The apparent Michaelis constant Km of the enzyme for adenine was $7.4\times 10^{-5}$M. The purine analogues, 6-chloropurine, 2,6-diaminopurine, 6-bromopurine, 4-aminopyrazolo [3.4-d]pyrimidine, and 8-azaadenine were substrates for the enzyme. 6-Dimethylaminopurine was a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme. The enzyme was inhibited by 1mM of $Cu^{2+}, Fe^{3+}, Pb^{2+}, Hg^{2+}$, and $Ag^{+}$, and 1mM of $\alpha$,$\alpha$'-dipyridyl, pentachlorophenol, and pCMB.
The Polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) oxidase involved in PVA degradation by microorganism has been purified to homogeneity from culture broth of Xanthomonas campestris J2Y grown in a minimal medium containing PVA as a sole carbon source. The enzyme was purified by DEAE-cellulose chromatograpy and Sephadex G-150 gel filtration. The purified PVA oxidase was electrophoretically homogeneous both in the absence and presence of SDS. The molecular weight of the enzyme was estimated to be about 55,000 daltons by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Sephadex G-150 gel filtration. The native enzyme existed as a monomer. The optimal pH and temperature was shown to be pH 7 and $37^{\circ}C$ respectively. The activity of enzyme was stable below $55^{\circ}C$ and between pH range of $5{\sim}11$. The enzyme activity was significantly inhibited by metal compounds such as $Ag^{2+},\;Hg^{2+}$. While, metal ions such as $Mn^{2+},\;and\;Cu^{2+}$ stimulated the reaction. Km value of the enzyme for PVA was $7.04{\times}10^{-2}mmol/{\ell}$.
1) Three ${\beta}-1$, 4-mannanases were isolated from germinated guar bean through extraction, ammonium sulfate fractionation, column chromatography on cellulose derivatives and gel filltration on Sephadex G-100. They were designated as ${\beta}-1$, 4-mannanase A,B and C, respectively, in the order of isolation. 2) These enzymes were different in several aspects such as pH optimum, effect of metal ions, adsorbability on cellulose derivatives, molecular weight, Michaelis constant toward reduced ivory nut mannan A, mode of action and extent of hydrolysis of the mannan. 3) ${\beta}-1$, 4-Mannanases A and C were proposed to be two different endo-enzymes of random-splitting type producing a series of oligosaccharides from ${\beta}-1$, 4-mannans. ${\beta}-1$, 4-Mannanase B was suggested to be possibly an exe-type enzyme catalyzing a stepwise splitting from the non-reducing end of ${\beta}-1$, 4-mannans to produce mannose. 4) Guaran was subjected to hydrolysis by the purified enzymes and the consequence was discussed in connection with structural requirements of the enzymes toward substituted ${\beta}-1$, 4-mannans and their role in germinating guar seeds.

An increase in the surface area of drugs by reducing particle sizes from microns to nanometers has been known as an efficient method to improve the bioavailability of water-insoluble drugs. To prevent drug nanoparticles from aggregation during the processes of drug formulation, a limited number of pharmaceutical inactive ingredients such as hydroxypropyl cellulose has been employed as stabilizers or dispersants. In this study, copolymers of hydrophilic and hydrophobic amino acids were synthesized by the ring opening polymerization of their N-carboxyanhydride monomers and evaluated as novel candidates to stabilize the nanoparticles of a water insoluble drug, naproxen. Naproxen nanoparticles stabilized by synthesized amino acid copolymers were successfully prepared in the size of $200\~500nm$ in 60 min by a wet comminution process. Particle size analysis showed that the effective stabilization performance of copolymers required the hydrophobic moiety content to be higher than $10 mol\%$. However, the molecular weight and morphology of copolymers was not the critical parameters in determining the particle size reduction. Their particle size was found to be stable up to 14 days without significant aggregation.

Zaltoprofen loaded polyoxalate (POX) microspheres were prepared by an emulsion solvent-evaporation/extraction method like oil-in-water (O/W) for sustained release of zaltoprofen. The influence of several preparation parameters such as fabrication temperature, stirring speed, intensity of the sonication, initial drug ratio, molecular weight ($M_w$) of POX, concentration of POX and concentration of emulsifier has been investigated on the zaltoprofen release profiles. Physicochemical properties and morphology of zaltoprofen loaded POX microspheres were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Through the analyzed results, it was demonstrated that the characteristics of the microspheres greatly affected by the prepared condition. The releases behavior of zaltoprofen was investigated for 10 days in vitro. It was confirmed that the release behavior of zaltoprofen can be controlled by the manufacturing factor of solvent-evaporation/extraction method.

Production of eco-friendly and biologically harmless materials is strongly required in all industries. In particular, reducing volatile organic compounds in coating processes is extremely important to secure worker's safety. During recent two decades, extensive research works on water-borne polyurethane dispersion (PUD) have been continuously developed as an alternative to solvent-borne polyurethane. However, PUD was shown inferior mechanical properties to the organic solvent-borne polyurethane due to a limit to the molecular weight increase, which resulted in the limit of applications. To overcome this drawback, several approaches have been examined such as polymer blends and thermal/radiation induced crosslinking. Among these methods, the radiation curing system was suitable for industrialization because of the high crosslinking density and fast curing speed. In this study, we overcame the drawback for PUD via introducing benzophenone radiation curable units to PUD. We synthesized PUD films which possessed good dispersion in water for 30 days, increased Tg and Td more than $5^{\circ}C$ after UV curing film as well as improved young's modulus more than double.
To determine the optimum coagulants concentrations for preparing soybean-curds, the transmittance of soybean-curd whey using spectrophotometer has been measured. The textural properties of soybean-curds were examined by texture analyzer and sensory evaluations. The general components, oligosaccharides and amino acids in soybean-curd wheys were analyzed. Protein patterns of soybean-curd wheys comparing with soyflour and soymilk were investigated. By texture analyzer, hardness, cohesiveness, springiness, and gumminess of Cacl$_2$ soybean-curd, MgCl$_2$ soybean-curd were higher than those of CaSO$_4$ soybean-curd and GDL soybean-curd. In the sensory evaluations, CaSO$_4$ soybean-curds and GDL soybean-curds were smoother and moister than others. Glutamic acid and aspartic acid were the first two abundant amino acids in three kinds of soybean-curd wheys, but arginine was the most abundant amino acid in GDL soybean-curd whey. Total sugar content of soybean-curd wheys were about 12-13 g/l, and the main sugars among 5 kinds of sugars were sucrose and raffinose. Electrophoresis using SDS-PAGE showed that glycinin and P-conglycinin, the main proteins of soybean appeared in soy flour and soymilk, and only low molecular weight subunits appeared in soybean-curd wheys.
The elution behavior of polystyrenes(PS), polymethylmethacrylates (PMMA), polybutadienes(PB), PS-PMMA(SM) block copolymers and PS-PB star shaped copolymers on the cross-linked polystyrene gels was studied. An interpretation was proposed for the plots of log hydrodynamic volume versus retention volume of solutes in the mobile phases such as tetrahydrofuran, toluene, chloroform, methylene chloride and tetrahydrofuran-cyclohexane mixture. In order to predict the retention of solutes from their physical properties, multiple stepwise regression analysis was applied to obtain the correlation. The distribution coefficients($K_p$) of solute-gel interactions in GPC for homopolymers and PS copolymers were also obtained in terms of network-limited separation mechanism. In the cases of PS and PB, $K_p$ values approach unity, while $K_p$ values for PMMA decrease as MW increase in the good solvent, but in poor solvent, $K_p$ values increase as MW increase. $K_p$ values of PS copolymers are dependent on their MW and composition, therefore, morohology of SM block copolymer is predicted to be random phase. Effects of structural features of 4 dinuclear constrained geometry catalysts having paraxylene derivative bridge (DCGC) on copolymerization of ethylene and 1-hexene were investigated. The bridges of three catalysts have para-xylene backbone with a different substituent at benzene ring. The substituents were hydrogen (Catalyst 1), isopropyl (Catalyst 2), n-hexyl (Catalyst 3) and 1-octyl (Catalyst 4). It was found that Catalyst 1 having hydrogen as a substituent exhibited the greatest activity among the four dinuclear CGCs. On the other hand, Catalyst 2 containing isopropyl as a substituent showed the smallest activity. Very interestingly, Catalyst 2 was able to produce about 6 times higher molecular weight polymer than Catalyst 3 and 4. Catalyst 3 and 4 having a long alkyl chain substituent revealed the biggest comonomer response to generate polyethylene copolymer containing more than 40% 1-hexene contents. These results suggest that the control of the substituent of para-xylene bridge of dinuclear CGC can provide a proper method to adjust the microstructure of polyethylene copolymers.
