  • This paper presents a fabrication method of microcapsules encapsulating fluorescent nanoparticles sensitive to an organic liquid, which is potentially applicable to the encapsulation of protein, cell and drug. It uses the supra-molecular self-assembly of a block copolymer at the interface of the stable and controllable droplets of water suspended with fluorescent nanoparticles and the polymer solved organic. The size and uniformity of the microcapsules were examined for the various polymer concentrations by using SEM image analysis. The maximum standard deviation of the produced microcapsules of less than 3.5% was obtained from the microcapsules produced from the same conditions. The inclusion of fluorescent nanoparticles was visualized in the fluorescence microscope and by using TEM image. It is shown that this fabrication method can provide the uniform size microcapsules with a higher inclusion.

  • A 20-year-old man underwent a Tc-99m HMPAO labeled leukocyte scan for the evaluation of an infection at the stump of an AK amputation, which was conducted due to an open communicated fracture of the left lower leg. Blood-flow and blood-pool images demonstrated a pseudoaneurysm with a focus of intense activity medial to the stump, and centered within a large photopenic defect by surrounding hematoma. Delayed image obtained at 3 hours post-injection showed persistent intense and slight increased activity, Contrast angiography confirmed the presence of a pseudoaneurysm arising from a branch of the left superficial femoral artery.

  • A numerical investigation has been carried out for the electrochemical reaction, mass and heat transfer characteristics of the Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell(MCFC) stack. The effects of cooling air channel and water gas shift reaction were taken into account. The current density distribution of electrodes, the molecular fractions of reactant gasses and three dimensional temperature distribution can be calculated and shown by several lines of equivalent values. The results have been compared with the existing ones, and reasonable agreement has been obtained. To examine the influence of changing parameters, such as the composition of reactant gases, the target average current density, the utilization of reactant gases, the cooling air inlet temperature and flow rates, the computer simulation has been done. The analysis method and computer program developed in this study will be greatly helpful to design and verify the optimum operating condition of MCFC stack.

  • Viscosities of toluene were experimentally determined by the falling-ball method at several temperatures and pressures to investigate the pressure and temperature dependence of the viscosity of toluene. With the shear stress of the viscous flow of toluene, the shear free energy, the shear entropy, and the shear enthalpy were defined to discuss the variations of the shear thermodynamic properties with pressure. The effect of temperature and pressure on the shear thermodynamic properties obtained experimentally can be explained by means of the molecular thermal agitation due to temperature incleasing and the steric effect of the closed molecules of to Iuene due to pressure elevation.

  • The microstructure of polymer membranes produced via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) of polymer solutions is a strong function of both the early-stage (by spinodal decomposition or nucleation & growth) and the late-stage phase separation (referred to in general as coarsening). In the case of early stage effects, the membrane morphology resulting from a nucleation & growth mechanism is either a poorly interconnecsed, stringy, beady structure which is mechanically fragile or a well interconnected structure with highly nonuniform pore sizes. In contrast, spinodal decomposition results in a well interconnected, mechanically strong membrane with highly uniform pore sizes. Here I describe recent quantitative studies of the coarsening effects on the microstructure of membranes produced via TIPS process. The dependence of microstructure on coarsening time, quench depth, solution viscosity, and polymer molecular weight was investigated in order to distinguish among three possible coarsening mechanisms, Ostwald ripening, coalescence, and hydrodynamic flow, which may be responsible for structural evolution after the early-stage phase Separation (spinodal decomposition or nucleation & growth).

  • Plasma polymerized thin films was prepared using an interelectrod inductively coupled gas-flow-type reactor. Styrene was chosen as the monomer to be used. This thin films were also delineated by the electron-beam apparatus with an acceleration voltage 30kV, and the pattern in the resist was developed with RIE 80 with argon gas mixture ratio, pressure and RF power. The molecular structure of thin films was investigated by GPC and FT-IR and then was discussed in relation to its quality as a resist. In the case of plasma polymerization, thickness of resist could be controlled by discharge duration and power. Also etch rate is increased as to growing pressure with RIE 80.

  • In a previous study, we showed that Cecropin A (1-8)-Magainin 2 (1-12) hybrid peptide (CA-MA)'s analogue, Anal P5, exhibit broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Anal P5, designed by flexible region (positions 9, 10)-substitution, Lys- (positions 4, 8, 14, 15) and Leu- (positions 5, 6, 12, 13, 16, 17, 20) substitutions, showed an enhanced antimicrobial and antitumor activity without hemolysis. The primary objective of the present study was to gain insight into the relevant mechanisms of antimicrobial activities of Anal P5 by using flow cytometric analysis. Anal P5 exhibits strong antifungal activity in a salt concentration independent manner. In addition, Anal P5 causes significant morphological alterations of the bacterial surfaces as shown by scanning electron microscopy, supporting its antibacterial activity. Its potent antibiotic activity suggests that Anal P5 is an excellent candidate as a lead compound for the development of novel antibiotic agents.

  • The effect of plasma polymerization conditions on the structure of the plasma polymerized styrene were investigated by using Fourier Transform Infrared Ray(FT-IR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Gel Permeation Chromatography(GPC). Plasma polymerized thin film was prepared using an interelectrode inductively coupled gas-flow-type reactor. We show that polymerization parameters of thin film affect sensitivity and etching resistance of plasma polymerized styrene is 1.41~3.93, and deposition rate of that are 32~383[.angs./min] with discharge power. Swelling and etching resistance becomes more improved with increasing discharge power during plasma polymerization. (author). 11 refs., 10 figs., 1 tab.

  • One-dimensional aluminum nitride (AlN) nanostructures were synthesized by calcining an Al(OH)(succinate) complex, which contained a very small amount of iron as a catalyst, under a mixed gas flow of nitrogen and CO (1 vol%). The complex decomposed into a homogeneous mixture of alumina and carbon at the molecular level, resulting in the lowering of the formation temperature of the AlN nanostructures. The morphology of the nanostructures such as nanocone, nanoneedle, nanowire, and nanobamboo was controlled by varying the reaction conditions, including the reaction atmosphere, reaction temperature, duration time, and ramping rate. Iron droplets were observed on the tips of the AlN nanostructures, strongly supporting that the nanostructures grow through the vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. The variation in the morphology of the nanostructures was well explained in terms of the relationship between the diffusion rate of AlN vapor into the iron droplets and the growth rate of the nanostructures.

  • Conformational change of ubiquitin variant with valine to alanine mutation at sequence position 26 was studied by varying solvent pH. Fluorescence emission spectra indicated that this variant ubiquitin has some residual structures in acidic and basic solution as compared to denaturant-induced unfolded state. Far-UV circular dichroic spectra indicated that the base-denatured state had more secondary structure than the acid-denatured state. Near-UV circular dichroic spectra indicated that the aromatic side-chains were in the relatively more rigid environment in the base-denatured state than those in the acid-denatured state. Although it appears that the more tertiary structure present in the base-denatured state, refolding reactions measured by stopped-flow fluorescence device suggest that both the acid- and base-denatured states occur before the major folding transition state. The acid- and base-denatured states are considered to reflect the early event of protein folding process.
