  • With the growth of offshore wind power generation market, the corresponding installation vessel market is also growing. It is anticipated that approximately 100 installation vessels will be required in the of shore wind power generation market by 2030. With a price range of 300 to 400 billion Korean won per vessel, this represents a high-value market compared to merchant vessels. Particularly, the demand for large installation vessels with a capacity of 11 MW or more is increasing. The rapid growth of the offshore wind power generation market in the Asia-Pacific region, centered around China, has led to several discussions on orders for operational installation vessels in this region. The seabed geology in the Asia-Pacific region is dominated by clay layers with low bearing capacity. Owing to these characteristics, during vessel operations, significant spudcan and leg penetration depths occur as the installation vessel rises and descends above the water surface. In this study, using penetration variables ranging from 3 to 21 m, the unique vibration period, structural safety of the legs, and conductivity safety index were assessed based on penetration depths. As the penetration depth increases, the natural vibration period and the moment length of the leg become shorter, increasing the margin of structural strength. It is safe against overturning moment at all angles of incidence, and the maximum value occurs at 270 degrees. The conditions reviewed through this study can be used as crucial data to determine the operation of the legs according to the penetration depth when developing operating procedures for WTIV in soft soil. In conclusion, accurately determining the safety of the leg structure according to the penetration depth is directly related to the safety of the WTIV.

  • The purpose of this study was to survey vegetation characteristics of Jeopdo (island) for the construction of a database. We installed and analyzed 52 plots with 100㎡ quadrat to investigate the vegetation characteristics. The community classification based on TWINSPAN found seven categories of vegetation communities in the surveyed region: Pinus thunbergii-Pinus densiflora community, Pinus densiflora-Quercus serrata community, Carpinus turczaninowii-Quercus variabilis community, Carpinus turczaninowii-Quercus acutissima community, Quercus variabilis-Carpinus turczaninowii community, Castanopsis sieboldii community, and Actinodaphne lancifolia-Camellia japonica community. The vegetation in Jeopdo is largely composed of evergreen conifer trees community (communities I and II), Carpinus turczaninowii-deciduous broad-leaved trees such as Quercus spp. community (communities III, IV, and V), and evergreen broad-leaved trees community (communities VI and VII). The evergreen conifer tree (Quercus serrata) community is currently competing with Pinus densiflora and Pinus thunbergii. The current state is expected to continue due to the lack of forces, such as Castanopsis sieboldii and Actinodaphne lancifolia, in the succession middle stage and climax stage. The current state of Carpinus turczaninowii-deciduous broad-leaved trees such as Quercus spp. community is expected to last for a long time due to slow vegetation development because of soil conditions. The evergreen broad-leaved trees community is transforming from the initial stage of Pinus densiflora and Pinus thunbergii through the stage in Quercus serrata to Castanopsis sieboldii and Actinodaphne lancifolia. The overall ages of the specimens were similar, and the oldest tree was the 59-year old Castanopsis sieboldii. The correlation analysis of major species showed a high positive correlation between Pinus thunbergii and Eurya japonica, Pinus densiflora and Fraxinus sieboldiana, and Actinodaphne lancifolia and Camellia japonica and a high negative correlation between Pinus densiflora and Carpinus turczaninowii and Carpinus turczaninowii and Eurya japonica.

  • The purpose of this study is to assess the play and leisure status of children in Korea. The subjects of the study were 564 children in elementary, middle, and high school classes in four districts of Seoul and one rural district in Gyeonggi Province. We surveyed and analyzed the objects, time, place and cost of both play and leisure and investigated the differences according to age, region and sex. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, the children's play and leisure subjects were more likely to be friends than family members, and the proportion of fathers among the parents decreased with increasing age. Second, the children spent most of their play and leisure time on media related activities. Third, unlike in the past, the children's places of play and leisure were very diverse and included many adult or commercial places, such as cafes and karaoke studios. Fourth, there were no differences in the cost of play and leisure, depending on the age or sex of the children, but there were regional differences.

  • The purpose of this contribution is to develop the framework of a methodology for identifying potential errors in georeferencing and in an application of it using specimens of Ox-Knee, Achyranthes bidentata Blume in Korea. At infraspecific level, uncertainty of identification showed that 41% of A. bidentata var. japonica and 28% of var. bidentata were misidentified, suggesting that the uncertainty level was independent of the reliability of experts' identification. For georeference specimen records, 71 specimens out of total 303 were selected and utilized as occurrence data: Uncertainty was 32.4 km at maximum and was 0.1297 km at minimum (mean = 4,055 m, s.d. = 5,772 m). Var. japonica is common throughout most of the southeastern Korea and west coastal areas, while var. bidentata has been found as far north as Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces. We modelled the potential distribution of two varieties using Bioclim approach in Korea based on several environmental factors. Our results indicated the most important region for var. japonica lies the west coast ranges and southern area, while for Chungcheongnam-do of potential high diversity occurs for var. bidentata. This study shows that the major factors to determine the distribution patterns of two varieties were thermal factors, rather than precipitation. The Bioclim model using geocode and georeferencing data makes the information increasingly useful and reliable. To improve data quality, it requires full management from data collection to final databases including data cleaning.

  • Records found on labels of specimens deposited at Kyoto University (KYO) and references about three Japanese taxonomists, Koidzumi, Gen'ichi (1883-1953), Ohwi, Jisaburo (1905-1977), Kitamura, Siro (1906-2002) were assembled to produce collector's itineraries from 1930 to 1935 in Korea. The quality of data on labels of the specimens varies, but most are only the collector's name and country of collection, often, the locality data are only textual, and the Chinese and Japanese names, as well as the ethnic dialects common to the region, varies widely. It is estimated that approximately 2,000 specimens collected from Korea by three taxonomists are currently held within the collections of Kyoto University herbarium (KYO). Koidzumi, who was the professor of Kyoto University, traversed different northern parts of the country, such as Island Jeju-do, Mt. Keumkang-san, Hamkyongbuk-do during summer (July to August) in 1932, 1933, and 1935. In 1930 and 1932, Ohwi spend three months in the unexplored mountains in northern parts, such as Hamkyeongnam-do, Hamkyeongbuk-do, and Gangwon-do. On the other hand, for two months in the middle of 1935 visited Jeju-do, Mt. Jirisan and travelled through southern parts. Unlike two previous botanists, major collections in Korea by Kitamura took place twice in one major area in northern part and Jeju-do and Mt. Keumgang-san in 1930, 1932, and 1935.

  • Microbiological hazard analysis of foodservice facilities and utensils of 6 hospitals in the Honam region was evaluated. In the microaerosol evaluation, the microbial counts of dinning table, kitchen, and freezer were comparatively high, and it indicated the microbial contamination of these facilities should be effectively managed. In the microbiological hazard analysis evaluation of cooking utensils and appliances, the total plate counts of cutting boards, knife, and meal plates were comparatively high but did not reveal significance. The counts of coliforms, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, were lower than the general limit of microbial contamination, and the microbiological safety of the cooking utensils and appliances were satisfactory. In the microbial safety evaluation of side dishes, microbial counts of heat-cooked foods were generally low and microbiological hazards of these side dishes were comparatively low.

  • In the coastal region of Korea, historical tide harmonic constants were collected. Long-term tides and short-term tides observed by the KHOA were analyzed by a tide harmonic analysis method. Based on the harmonic constants, tidal characteristics such as tide asymmetry in Korean coastal waters were investigated. The harmonic constants obtained from the long-term tide data in the western coast have been used to show the relation between tide variation and reclamation project. $M_2$ amplitudes in the western coast have been decreased and $M_2$ phases were faster. $M_4$ amplitudes also were reduced and $M_4$ phases were faster in overall. In Mokpo and Kunsan tidal nonlinearity is relatively conspicuous. Overall, non-linearity of tidal currents is higher in the tidal channels flowing fast. The tidal non-linearity has increased by the development projects including large reclamation. The flood dominant characteristic in the northern and central part of Korean western coastal waters and the ebb dominant characteristic in the southern part have been intensified. The construction of Saemangeum sea dike has significantly changed the tidal characteristic in Korean western coastal waters.

  • A full-length cDNA and genomic DNA of a $leucoanthocyanidin$ $dioxygenase$ ($DgLDOX$) gene was isolated from the petals of chrysanthemum 'Argus', and comparative features of the gene among three flower color mutants derived from a gamma-ray mutagenesis were characterized. The cDNA coding region of the gene was 1068 bp and was translated into 356 amino acids accordingly. The genomic DNA size was 1346 bp for 'Argus', while three mutants revealed ranges of 1363 to 1374 bp. A single intron between two coding exons for the $DgLDOX$ gene was found, of which size was 112 bp for 'Argus', but 128 or 137 bp for three flower color mutants, indicating that a genomic insertion in the intron occurred during the gamma-ray mutagenesis. DNA blot analysis revealed the $DgLDOX$ gene presenting as a single copy in the chrysanthemum genome. The $DgLDOX$ gene was expressed in both 'Argus' of light-pink color and two purple color mutants (AM1 and AM3) but had very weak expression in only white color mutant (AM2). The results demonstrated that variations in the flower color of the mutants might be associated with changes in the amino acid moieties in the coding exons or fragment insertions in the intron of the $DgLDOX$ gene, which potentially resulted in less expression of the gene in the white colored mutant.

  • We investigated the flora of Imja-do(Isl.), an island of the Shinan archipelago, located in Imja-myeon, Shinan-gun, Jollanamo-do and discussed the vascular plants found there. Twenty-four separate field trips (100days) were completed from August of 1997 to October of 2009. As a result, we identified the distribution of 526 taxa in Imja-do(Isl.), comprising 112 families, 331 genera, 463 species, 1 subspecies, 60 varieties, and 2 forms. There are a total of 78 taxa of floristic regional indicator plants and one taxon of level II endangered species, Millettia japonica, as designated by the Korean Ministry of the Environment. The floristic regional indicator plants are as follows; four taxa of level V such as Utricularia bifida, two taxa of level IV such as Cladium chinense, 14 taxa of level III such as Aletris spicata, three taxa of level II, and 55 taxa of level I. In addition, one endangered species (EN), Nymphoides coreana, five vulnerable species (VU),such as Ilex cornuta, and three near-threatened species (NT) such as Utricula riaracemosa, were found in the investigated area. The plants of Imja-do(Isl.) are classified into four types based on the plant geographical origin, as follows: 1) boreal plants advancing southward in a glacial period, 2) temperate plants spreading eastward from the Himalayas and China to Japan passing through the south coast of Korea, 3) subtropical plants, and 4) indigenously developed endemic species of the warm-temperate region of East Asia.

  • The c-myc proto-oncogene is Involved In the control of normal cell proliferation and differentiation of many cell lineages. Although it has heen suggested that c-myc may play an important role in the mammalian early development, it Is unclear whether the embryonic c-myc mRNA is originated from zygotic gene expression or stored maternal message. Thus, we have construded expression vectors, In which the 5, flanking sequences including c-myc promoter region and a large non-coding exon I are fused 'sith E. coli lacZ gene that encedes $\beta$-galactosldase as a reporter. As c-myc exon I contains a modulatory sequence, we designed t, vo types of vectors (pcmyc.Gall and pcmyc-Ga12) to examine the role of exon I in c-myc expression. The former contains the complete exon I and the later has a deletion in 40 bp of modulator sequence located In the exon I of c-myc These vectors were microInjected into fertilized one-cell embryos and $\beta$-galactosidase activity was examined by X-gal staining during early embryogenesis. $\beta$-galactosidase activity derived from c-myc promoter was decreased at two-cell stage. The expression level directed by pcmyc- Ga12 was similar to that of pcmyc-Gal1, indicating that the medulatory sequence in exon I may not be Involved at least In the regulation of embryonic c-myc expression. In summary, the present study indicates that the c-myc promoter is functional at the early stage embryo, and the regulation of c-myc expression is under the control of "zygotic" clock of preimplantation mouse embryos.e embryos.
