The present study summarizes a series of compressive tests on concrete cylinder in order to examine the stressstrain relationship of alkali-activated (AA) slag concrete. The compressive strength and unit weight of concrete tested ranged from 8.6 MPa to 42.2 MPa and from $2,186kg/m^3$ to $2,343kg/m^3$, respectively. A mathematical equation representing the complete stress-strain curve was developed based on test results recorded from 34 concrete specimens. The modulus of elasticity, strain at peak stress, slopes of ascending and descending branches of stress-strain curves were generalized as a function of compressive strength and unit weight of concrete. The mean and standard deviation of the coefficient of variance between measured and predicted curves were 6.9% and 2.6%, respectively. This indicates that the stress-strain relationship of AA slag concrete is represented properly with more accuracy in the proposed model than in some other available models for ordinary portland cement (OPC) concrete.

In this work, the effect of hydrophobic treated silica on the water absorption, thermal stabilities, and mechanical properties of the epoxy nanocomposites were investigated as a function of the silica content. As filler, fumed silica treated by dimethyldichlorosilane was used. It was found that the silica was well dispersed in the epoxy resins by the melt-mixing method with the addition of a silane coupling agent. The water absorption of the nanocomposites decreased with an increase of the silica content due to the effect of hydrophobic treated silica. The thermal properties, such as thermal degradation temperature, glass transition temperature ($T_g$), and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), of the nanocomposites were improved by the addition of silica. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites, that is, the tensile strength and modulus, were enhanced with increasing silica content. This was attributed to the physically strong interaction between silica and epoxy resins.
In this study, the effect of temperature and soil confining stress on geosyntheic stress-strain properties was quantified by performing the temperature dependent confined tension tests for four types of geosynthetic including woven geotextile, composite, geomembrane and geogrid specimen. Temperature instrumentation on the GRS-retaining wall constructed in Jaechon-shi area was also performed to examine the a seasonal temperature variation of geosynthetic reinforcements in the backfill. Based on the test results, a comparison was made between unconfined and confined moduli far each temperature to quantify the soil confinement and temperature effect on stress-strain properties. And it was also proposed that the simple expressions for the secant moduli of geosynthetics as a function of temperature and confining stress on geosynthetics. As a result of the FDM analysis of GRS-retaining wall, the method of considering the effect of temperature and confining stress on geosynthetic reinforcements when performing the FDM analysis of GRS-retaining wall was proposed.
Biodegradable polyurethane (PU)/clay nanocomposite films were prepared via extrusion compounding process followed by casting film process. Organically modified montmorillonite (denoted as C30B) with a large amount of hydroxyl groups on its surface was used for the formation of strong bonding with PU resin. From both XRD analysis and TEM observations, the intercalated and exfoliated structure, and dispersion state of silicate platelets in the compounded nanocomposite films were confirmed. In addition, the rheological and tensile properties, optical transparency, oxygen permeability of the prepared nanocomposites were investigated as a function of added nanoclay content, and moreover based on these results, the corelation between the morphology and the resulting properties of the nanocomposites could be presented. The inclusion of nanoclays at appropriate content resulted in remarkable improvement in the nanocomposite performance including tensile modulus, elongation, transparency, and oxygen barrier property, however at excess amount of nanoclays, reduction or very slight increase was observed due to poor dispersion. The biodegradability of the prepared nanocomposite film was evaluated by examining the deterioration in the barrier and tensile properties during degradation period under compost.

Mechanical properties of cancellous bone with a high porosity and cortical bone with a high fraction of solid are estimated by the measurement of ultrasonic wave propagation. The speed of sound (SOS) in ultrasonic waves is usually measured by two equations, bulk wave equation and bar wave equation. Bulk wave speed has almost same as the fast wave of Biot's theory. In this study, we examine whether the bulk wave speed is influenced by the anisotropy of bone matrix. The SOS when the bone matrix is isotropy is 0.69% faster than that when the bone matrix is transversely isotropy. We also examine if the use of bar equation is adequate for a cortical bone. In the previous paper, the bar wave speed is a function of Young's modulus or elastic coefficient tensor. In the same manner, the effect of bar wave speed to isotropic and anisotropic bone is estimated.
Based on the study conducted by Kim et al. (205a, b), an improved stability design method for evaluating the effective buckling lengths of beam-column members is proposed herein, using system elastic/inelastic buckling analysis and second-order elastic analysis. For this purpose, the stress-strain relationship of a column is inversely formulated from the reference load-carrying capacity proposed in design codes, so as to derive the tangent modulus of a column as a function of the slenderness ratio. The tangent stiffness matrix of a beam-column element is formulated using the so-called "stability functions," and elastic/inelastic buckling analysis Effective buckling lengths are then evaluated by extending the basic concept of a single simply-supported column to the individual members as one component of a whole frame structure. Through numerical examples of several structural systems and loading conditions, the possibilities of enhancement in stability design for frame structures are addressed by comparing their numerical results obtained when the present design method is used with those obtained when conventional stability design methods are used.

To improve the adhesion of interface and dispersion of glass beads in the composite, HDPE filled with glass brads, we encapsulated the g1ass beads with polymer by phase separation method using complex coacervation in organic solvent. EMAA and EAA were used as the polymeric wall materials. The microencapsulation efficiency and morphology were observed by thermogravimetric analysis and SEM, respectively. And also we investigated the physical and dynamic mechanical properties of the composite as the function of the beads contents and microencapsulation efficiency. Compared with the composite containing non-treated glass beads, the decrease in tensile strengthe of the composites containing the encapsulated glass beads become markedly small, and about 30~40% Increase in tensile modulus was observed. From the results of the dynamic mechanical analysis, it was found that the adhesion of interface and dispersion could be improved upon encapsulation.
A blend polymeric system composed of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA or PM) and polystyrene (PS) dissolved in chloroform was rheologically studied. The viscosities ${\eta}_{bl}$ of the blend system with various blending ratios ${\chi}$ changing from zero (pure PS solution) to unity (pure PMMA solution) were measured at $25{\circ}C$ as a function of shear rates ${\dot{s}}$ by using a Couette type viscometer. ${\eta}_{bl}$ at a given ${\dot{s}}$ decreased exponentially with ${\chi}$ reaching asymptotic constant value of ${\eta}_{bl}$ ; ${\eta}_{bl}$ at a given ${\chi}$ is greater at a smaller ${\dot{s}}$. These results are explained by using Ree-Erying's theory of viscosity, ${\eta}_{bl}=(x_1{\beta}_1/{\alpha}_1)_{b}_1+ (x_2{\beta}_2/{\alpha}_2)_{bl}[sinh^{-1}{\beta}_2(bl) {\dot{s}}]/{\beta}_2(bl){\dot{s}}$. The Gibbs activation energy ${\Delta}G_i^\neq$(i = 2 for non-Newtonian units) entering into the intrinsic relaxation time ${\beta}$ is represented by a linear combination ${\Delta}G_i^\neq(bl) ={\chi}{\Delta}G_i^{\neq}_{iPM}+(1-{\chi}){\Delta}G_i^{\neq}_{iPS}$;the intrinsic shear modulus$[[\alpha}_i]^{-1}$ is also represented by $[{\alpha}_i(bl)]^{-1}={\chi}[{\alpha}_{iPM}]^{-1}+(1-{\chi})[{\alpha}_{iPS}]^{-1}$ and the fraction of area on a shear surface occupied by the ith flow units $x_i(bl)$ is similarly represented, i.e., $x_i(bl) = {\chi}x_{iPM}+(1-{\chi})x_{iPS}$. By using these ideas the Ree-Eyring equation was rewritten which explained the experimental results satisfactorily.

TiAlCN coatings with various C contents were synthesized by unbalanced magnetron sputtering. The characteristics, the crystalline structure, surface morphology, hardness, and friction coefficient of the coatings as a function of the C content were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), a microhardness tester, and a wear test. In addition, their corrosion behaviors in a deaerated 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at $40^{\circ}C$ were investigated by potentiodynamic polarization tests. The results indicated that the $Ti_{14.9}Al_{15.5}C_{30.7}N_{38.9}$ coating had the highest hardness, elastic modulus, and a plastic deformation resistance of 39 GPa, 359 GPa, and 0.55, respectively, and it also had the lowest friction coefficient of approximately 0.26. Comparative evaluation of the TiAlCN coatings indicated that a wide range of coating properties, especially coating hardness, could be obtained by the synthesis methods and processing variables. The microhardness of the coatings was much higher than that from previously reported coating using similar magnetron sputtering processes. It was almost as high as the microhardness measured from the TiAlCN coatings (~41 GPa) synthesized using an arc ion plating process. The potentiodynamic test showed that the corrosion resistance of the TiAlCN coatings was significantly better than the TiAlN coatings, and their corrosion current density ($i_{corr}$), corrosion potentials ($E_{corr}$) and corrosion rate decreased with an increasing C content in the coatings. The much denser microstructure of the coatings due to the increased amount of amorphous phase with increasing C contents in the coatings could result in the the improved corrosion resistance of the coatings.
Finite element analysis is one of the important methods to study the structural performance. Due to the simplification, discretization and error of structural parameters, numerical model errors always exist. Besides, structural characteristics may also change because of material aging, structural damage, etc., making the initial finite element model cannot simulate the operational response of the structure accurately. Based on Bayesian methods, the initial model can be updated to obtain a more accurate numerical model. This paper presents the work on the field test, modal identification and model updating of a Chinese reinforced concrete pagoda. Based on the ambient vibration test, the acceleration response of the structure under operational environment was collected. The first six translational modes of the structure were identified by the enhanced frequency domain decomposition method. The initial finite element model of the pagoda was established, and the elastic modulus of columns, beams and slabs were selected as model parameters to be updated. Assuming the error between the measured mode and the calculated one follows a Gaussian distribution, the posterior probability density function (PDF) of the parameter to be updated is obtained and the uncertainty is quantitatively evaluated based on the Bayesian statistical theory and the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, and then the optimal values of model parameters can be obtained. The results show that the difference between the calculated frequency of the finite element model and the measured one is reduced, and the modal correlation of the mode shape is improved. The updated numerical model can be used to evaluate the safety of the structure as a benchmark model for structural health monitoring (SHM).
