An Efficient UEP Transmission Scheme for MIMO-OFDM Systems (MIMO-OFDM 시스템을 위한 효율적인 UEP 전송기법 제안)

  • Most multimedia source coders exhibit unequal bit error sensitivity. Efficient transmission system design should therefore incorporate the use of matching unequal error protection (UEP). In this paper, we present and evaluate a flexible space-time coding system with unequal error protection. Multiple transmit and receive antennas and bit-interleaved coded modulation techniques are used combined with rate compatible punctured convolutional codes. A near optimum iterative receiver is employed with a multiple-in multiple-out inverse mapper and a MAP decoder as component decoders. We illustrate how the UEP system gain can be achieved either as a power or bandwidth gain compared to the equal error protection system (EEP) for the identical source and equal overall quality for both the UEP and EEP systems. An example with two/three transmit and two receive antennas using BPSK modulation is given for the block fading channel.

Automatic Recognition of Analog and Digital Modulation Signals (아날로그 및 디지털 변조 신호의 자동 인식)

  • We propose an automatic modulation recognition scheme which extracts pre-defined key features from the received signal and then applies equal gain combining method to determine the used modulation. Moreover, we compare and analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm with that of decision-theoretic algorithm. Our scheme extracts five pre-defined key features from each data segment, a data unit for the key feature extraction, which are then averaged over all the segments to recognize the modulation according to the decision procedure. We check the performance of the proposed algorithm through computer simulations for analog modulations such as AM, FM, SSB and for digital modulations such as FSK2, FSK4, PSK2, and PSK4, by measuring recognition success rate varying SNR and data collection time. The result shows that the performance of the proposed scheme is comparable to that of the decision-theoretic algorithm with less complexity.

Beta-carotene prevents the spermatogenic disorders induced by exogenous scrotal hyperthermia through modulations of oxidative stress, apoptosis, and androgen biosynthesis in mice

  • We investigated whether ${\beta}$-carotene (${\beta}-CA$) or ellagic acid (EA), originating from various fruits and vegetables, has a preventive effect against male infertility induced by exogenous scrotal hyperthermia. ICR adult mice were intraperitoneally treated with 10 mg/kg of ${\beta}-CA$ or EA daily for 13 days consecutively. During this time, mice were subjected to transient scrotal heat stress in a water bath at $43^{\circ}C$ for 20 min on day 7, and their testes and blood were obtained on day 14 for histopathologic and biochemical analyses. Heat stress induced significant testicular weight reduction, germ cell loss and degeneration, as well as abnormal localization of phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (PHGPx) and manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) in spermatogenic and Leydig cells. Heat stress also altered the levels of oxidative stress (lipid peroxidation, SOD activity, and PHGPx, MnSOD, and $HIF-1{\alpha}$ mRNAs), apoptosis (Bax, Bcl-xL, caspase 3, $NF-{\kappa}B$, and $TGF-{\beta}1$ mRNAs), and androgen biosynthesis (serological testosterone concentration and $3{\beta}$-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase mRNA) in testes. These changes were all improved significantly by ${\beta}-CA$ treatment, but only slightly improved by EA treatment. These findings indicate that ${\beta}-CA$, through modulations of oxidative stress, apoptosis, and androgen biosynthesis, is a potent preventive agent against testicular injuries induced by scrotal hyperthermia.

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and Saccharomyces cerevisiae feed supplements improve growth performance and gut mucosal architecture with modulations on cecal microbiota in red-feathered native chickens

  • Objective: The aim of study was to investigate the effects of in-feed supplementation of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (BA) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC) on growth performance, gut integrity, and microbiota modulations in red-feathered native chickens (RFCs). Methods: A total of 18,000 RFCs in a commercial farm were evenly assigned into two dietary treatments (control diet; 0.05% BA and 0.05% SC) by randomization and raised for 11 weeks in two separate houses. Fifty RFCs in each group were randomly selected and raised in the original house with the partition for performance evaluations at the age of 9 and 11 weeks. Six non-partitioned RFCs per group were randomly selected for analyses of intestinal architecture and 16S rRNA metagenomics. Results: Feeding BA and SC increased the body weight and body weight gain, significantly at the age of 11 weeks (p<0.05). The villus height/crypt ratio in the small intestines and Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio were also notably increased (p<0.05). The supplementation did not disturb the microbial community structure but promote the featured microbial shifts characterized by the significant increments of Bernesiella, Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group, and Butyrucimonas, following remarkable decrements of Bacteroides, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, and Succinatimonas in RFCs with growth benefits. Besides, functional pathways of peptidoglycan biosynthesis, nucleotide excision repair, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, and aminoacyl transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA) biosynthesis were significantly promoted (p<0.05). Conclusion: In-feed supplementation of BA and SC enhanced the growth performance, improved mucosal architectures in small intestines, and modulated the cecal microbiota and metabolic pathways in RFCs.

Vibrations of long repetitive structures by a double scale asymptotic method

  • In this paper, an asymptotic two-scale method is developed for solving vibration problem of long periodic structures. Such eigenmodes appear as a slow modulations of a periodic one. For those, the present method splits the vibration problem into two small problems at each order. The first one is a periodic problem and is posed on a few basic cells. The second is an amplitude equation to be satisfied by the envelope of the eigenmode. In this way, one can avoid the discretisation of the whole structure. Applying the Floquet method, the boundary conditions of the global problem are determined for any order of the asymptotic expansions.

Large eddy simulations of the flow around a circular cylinder: effects of grid resolution and subgrid scale modeling

  • Large-eddy simulations of the flow around a circular cylinder at a Reynolds number, based on cylinder diameter and free-stream velocity, $Re_D=2{\times}10^4$ are presented. Three different dynamic subgrid-scale models are used, viz. the dynamic eddy-viscosity model and two different mixed two-parameter models. The sensitivity to grid refinement in the spanwise and radial directions is systematically investigated. For the highest resolution considered, the effects of subgrid-scale modeling are also discussed in detail. In particular, it is shown that SGS modeling has a significant influence on the low-frequency modulations of the aerodynamics loads, which are related to significant changes in the near wake structure.

  • Typical biomechanical system such as human body and mammals possess abundant muscles which are more than required for motion generation of such systems. We have shown that the excess number of muscles play important roles in spring-like impedance modulation. redundant kinematic structure, which is another feature of biomechanical systems, allows modulations of inertia and damping properties of such systems. In this work, we propose a frequency modulation algorithm which combines the spring-like impedance with inertia impedance. also, a load distribution method for frequency modulation is also introduced. The frequency modulation represents a simulataneous control of force and kinematic redundancies, which has not been addressed in the literature.

  • An open loop vibrational control of underactuated mechanical systems with amplitude and frequency modulations is investigated. The underactuated systems considered in the paper are assumed to have free joints with no brake. The active joints are positioned first by a linearizing control, and then periodic oscillatory inputs are applied to them to move the remaining free joints to their desired states. A systematic way of obtaining averaged systems for the underactuated systems with oscillatory vibrations is developed. A complete solution to the open loop control strategy in terms of determining amplitudes and frequencies for general system is still under investigation. However, a specific control design for 2R manipulator which is obtained the averaging system is demonstrated.

  • 수중에서 AUV신호나 화상데이터의 정확한 고속 전송 등을 위해 수중 데이터 통신에 대한 많은 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 수중 데이터 통신에서 잔향과 배경 잡음 등의 해양 환경 특성을 극복하는 것은 신뢰성 있는 통신 환경을 이룩하는데 중요하다. 특히 해면과 해저로 이루어진 천해 환경에서 해면과 해저 반사파에 의한 영향은 수중 데이터 통신의 성능을 좌우하는 중요한 요소 중의 하나로 알려져 있다. 이러한 환경적 영향을 최소화하여 높은 성능의 통신 환경을 제공하기 위해 다중경로의 영향을 적게 받는 변조방식을 선택하는 것이다. 수중 데이터 통신에서 일반적으로 사용되는 변조방식은 FSK, PSK, DPSK 등이 있다. 본 연구에서는 해면$\cdot$해저로 이루어진 해양 통신 채널에서 세 가지 변조방식의 성능을 수치모의실험을 통하여 비교$\cdot$분석하였다. 수치모의실험에서 해면 해저로 이루어진 천해의 해양 통신 채널은 음원 영상법을 적용하여 구성하였으며 각 변조방식의 성능은 BER(Bit Error Ratio)로 나타내었다.

Fully Printed Chipless RFID Tags Using Dipole Array Structures with Enhanced Reading Ranges

  • This article proposes a design of chipless RFID tag with dipole array structure that is fully printable using conductive ink. The proposed tags encode data based on spectral signature modulations. The reading range is considerably increased (2 m) while maintaining low transmission power (1 mW). Several prototype chipless RFID tags were fabricated and measured in the SHF and UHF bands. The proposed dipole array structure enhances the antenna gain of the passive tags and contributes to overcoming the low conductivity of conductive ink. In order to verify the utility of our proposal, the tags are manufactured on paper, using conductive ink, for the purpose of economic mass production.
