Modular construction technique is an adaptation of factory-based mass production concept in ordinary manufacturing industries to construction industry and it assumes that panels, units, etc. are fabricated in factories and assembled in construction sites. Given its structural limitations, modular construction technique is primarily used in low-story buildings whose maximum height is usually five stories, but researchers are actively studying possible adaptation of modular construction technique to high-rise building designs these days as in the case of infill-type modular construction design. Infill-type modular construction technique, most frequently used in high-rise building construction projects, completes frame construction first in reinforced concrete structures and fills unit modules in such structures. However, infill-type modular construction technique leads to longer construction schedule accompanying increase in construction cost, cost overrun due to additional of temporary work, and possible damage to units in the wake of facility construction. Accordingly, this study is performed as a basic study for the development of bottom-up infill-type modular construction technique intended to construct structural frames and fill in units sequentially in a bid to address such drawbacks of current infill-type modular construction technique.
Due to the unique construction method of modular steel buildings (MSBs) with units prefabricated fully off the site and assembled quickly on the site, the inter-module connection for easy operation and overall performance of the system were key issues. However, it was a lack of relevant research on the system-level performance of MSBs. This study investigated the seismic performance of two-storey modular steel structure with a proposed vertical rotary inter-module connection. Three full-scale quasi-static tests, with and without corrugated steel plate and its combination, were carried out to evaluate and compare their seismic behaviour. The hysteretic performance, skeleton curves, ductile performance, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation capacity, and deformation pattern were clarified. The results showed that good ductility and plastic deformation ability of such modular steel structures. Two lateral-force resistance mechanisms with different layout combinations were also discussed in detail. The corrugated steel plate could significantly improve the lateral stiffness and bearing capacity of the modular steel structure. The cooperative working mechanism of modules and inter-module connections was further analyzed. When the lateral stiffness of upper and lower modular structures was close, limited bending moment transfer may be considered for the inter-module connection. While a large lateral stiffness difference existed initially between the upper and lower structures, an obvious gap occurred at the inter-module connection, and this gap may significantly influence the bending moments transferred by the inter-module connections. Meanwhile, several design recommendations of inter-module connections were also given for the application of MSBs.

Precast concrete (PC) modules have been increased its use in modular buildings due to their better seismic performance than steel modules. The main issue of the PC module is to ensure structural performance with appropriate connection methods. This study proposed a PC modular beam system for simple construction and improved structural and splicing performance. This modular system consisted of modules with steel plates inserted, and it is easy to construct by bolted connection. The steel plates play the role of tensile rebar and stirrup, which has the advantage of structural performance. The structural performance of the proposed PC modular beam system was evaluated by flexural test on one reinforced concrete (RC) beam specimen consisting of a monolithic, and two PC specimens with the proposed PC modular beam system. The results demonstrated that the proposed PC modular beam system achieved approximately 86% of the structural performance compared to the RC monolithic specimen, with similar ductility of approximately 1.06 fold greater.

The object of this paper is to evaluate on constructability of modular steel frame with the hollow structural steel section to LEB C-shape. A modular building is built with factory-manufacture and site-construction. The advantage of a Modular building presents that enhanced building quality, shortened construction period and easy at an expansion and enlargement for buildings but also has demerits such as size restriction of the modular units according to the Road Traffic Law and Inflexibility of the unit composition. So in this study we use light-weighted structure members with bolted joint for easy Knock-down and traffic, also we evaluated the constructability of this bolted joints type modular buildings.

In this study, a shape design and an analysis considering structural stability were investigated to develop an icosahedron-based hemispherical modular dome. To design this modular dome, a program that can perform icosahedron shape modeling, modularization of joint connection members, and the analysis of structural stability was developed. Furthermore, based on the adopted numerical model, the eigen buckling mode, unstable behavior characteristics according to load vector, and the critical buckling load of the modular dome under uniformly distributed load and concentrated load were analyzed, and the resistance capacities of the structure according to different load vectors were compared. The analysis results for the modular dome suggest that the developed program can perform joint modeling for shape design as well as modular member design, and adequately expressed the nonlinear behaviors of structured according to load conditions. The critical buckling load results also correctly reflected the characteristics of the load conditions. The uniformly distributed load was more advantageous to the structural stability than concentrated load.

Modular buildings are constructed by assembling modular units which are prefabricated in a factory and delivered to the site. However, due to a problem of noise between floors, concrete slab is usually poured at the top or bottom level of a modular unit in Korea. This greatly increases the weight of buildings, but designing vertical members of modular units to resist overall gravity loads is very inefficient. In this study, considering domestic building construction practices, feasible structural systems for tall modular buildings are proposed in which separate steel frames and reinforced concrete core walls are designed to resist gravity and lateral loads. To verify performance, a three-dimensional structural analysis has been performed with two types of prototype buildings, i.e., a residential building and a hotel. From the results, wind-induced lateral displacements and seismic story drifts are examined and compared with their limit values. Between the two kinds of buildings, the efficiency of the proposed system is also evaluated through a comparison of the weight of structural components. Finally, the effect of a floor diaphragm on the overall behavior is analyzed and discussed.
Modular construction has been increasingly used for mid-to-high rise buildings attributable to the high construction speed, improved quality and low environmental pollution. The individual and repetitive room-sized module unit is usually fully finished in the factory and installed on-site to constitute an integrated construction. However, there is a lack of design guidance on modular structures. This paper mainly focuses on the evaluation of the initial stiffness of corrugated steel plate shears walls (CSPSWs) in container-like modular construction. A finite element model was firstly developed and verified against the existing cyclic tests. The theoretical formulas predicting the initial stiffness of CSPSWs were then derived. The accuracy of the theoretical formulas was verified by the related numerical and test results. Furthermore, parametric analysis was conducted and the influence of the geometrical parameters on the initial stiffness of CSPSWs was discussed and evaluated in detail. The present study provides practical design formulas and recommendations for CSPSWs in modular construction, which are useful to broaden the application of modular construction in high-rise buildings and seismic area.

Wall structure smart modular is a building construction method where modules are manufactured in a factory and assembled on-site. This method is gaining popularity in the construction industry as it reduces construction time and mitigates risks such as material supply and labor costs. Wall structure smart modular is necessary as it provides comfortable temporary classroom space during renovation and remodeling of aging school buildings. The structure and characteristics of each type of temporary classroom modular were compared, and wall structure modular showed superior performance in terms of height and weight competitiveness compared to mixed structures. With these advantages, wall structure modular can ensure economic efficiency and recyclability as a temporary classroom. In the future, we aim to compare and analyze the standards such as inter-floor noise and heat transfer coefficient for wall structure and mixed structures.

This is a basic experimental study to apply FRP modular box member to a variety of construction structures exposed to flexural strength, such as a slab and a girder. Applying FRP modular box member to a real structure requires a large section. FRP box member was made into modular systems. Tests were conducted under various conditions in order to analyze jointing performance of the developed FRP modular box member as a large section. For the methods of jointing FRP modular box member, synthetic resins connection, mechanical connection, and a combination of both were used to test both length and breadth connection. As a result of the test, using urethane + two bolts + sheets was the most efficient method of connecting FRP modular box member. It is expected that the proposed joint system in this study will contribute to the increase of failure load and synthesis behavior of FRP modular box member.
Modular bridge construction enabling better productivity of design and construction by standardized members and robotic construction becomes an important issue in construction industry. Modular structures needs accurate information delivery between design, fabrication and construction processes. BIM (Building Information Modeling) based parametric modeling was proposed for the modular bridge substructure. Considering ranges of parameters of the modular bridge, fixed value, variables and relations were defined and these parametric models were applied to design, analysis and fabrication. Experience from development of new structures can be embedded in the 3D models, and the models provide efficient and precise knowledge delivery.
