  • This paper concerns the measurement of thermal conductivity of grouting materials for ground loop heat exchanger. A thermal conductivity meter, QTM-500 based on modified transient hot wire method was used to measure the thermal conductivity of neat bentonite and mixtures of bentonite and various additives. Relative to the total mixture mass, as the percent additive was increased the mixture thermal conductivity increased. For the bentonite-silica sand mixtures, the higher density of the sand particles resulted in much higher mixture thermal conductivity. The quartzite and silica sands produced the largest increases in mixture thermal conductivity, while common masonry and limestone sands produced lower thermal conductivity increases.

  • The excessive phosphate in water causes eutrophication which destroys water environment. In this study, mesoporous silica was synthesized and several functional groups were attached on it. Samples were tested to identify the ability to remove phosphate. The structures of synthesized materials were analyzed by X-ray diffractions (XRD), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) and surface area analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). To determine the maximum phosphate adsorption capacities and sorption rate, the equilibrium test and kinetic test was conducted. Among functionalized SBA-15 samples, pure SBA-15 didn't adsorb phosphate but Al-SBA-15 and Ti-SBA-15 showed good performances to remove phosphate. The maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of Al-SBA-15 was efficient compared to other adsorbents.

  • PURPOSES : This study is to evaluate ASR(alkali silica reactivity) resistance of ternary blended binder adding ultra fine mineral admixture. METHODS : This study analyzes ASR expansion using ASTM C 1260 and 1567. RESULTS : This study showed that the fineness of mineral admixture had no effect on ASR expansion. The expansion of ternary blended binder(UFFA 20%+FGGBS 10%) were below 0.1%, and this binder met the ASR standard. Also when adding the CSA expansion agent, ASR expansion slightly decreased. The expansion of latex modified mixture increased by 80% comparing plain mixture. CONCLUSIONS : Ternary blended binder met the ASR standard, and this binder is available in concrete bridge deck overlay.

  • Optical transparency and high diffraction efficiency are two essential factors for high performance of the photopolymer. Optical transparency mainly depends on the miscibility between polymer binder and photopolymerized polymer, while diffraction efficiency depends on the refractive index modulation between polymer binder and photopolymerized polymer. For most of organic materials, the large refractive index difference between two polymers accompanies large structural difference that leads to the poor miscibility and thus poor optical quality via light scattering. Therefore, it is difficult to design a high-performance photopolymer satisfying both requirements. In this work, first, we prepared a new phase-stable photopolymer (PMMA) with large refractive index modulation and investigated the optical properties. Our photopolymer is based on modified poly (methyl methacrylate) as a polymer binder, acryl amide as a photopolymerizable monomer, triethanolamine as initiator, and yellow eosin as a photosensitizer at 532 nm. Diffraction efficiency over 85% and optical transmittance over 90% were obtained for the photopolymer. Second, Organic-inorganic nanocomposite films were prepared by dispersing an aromatic methacrylic monomer and a photo- initiator in organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel matrices. The film properties could be controlled by optimizing the content of an organically modified silica precursor (TSPEG) in the sol-gel matrices. The photopolymer film modified with the organic chain (TSPEG) showed high diffraction efficiency (> 90%) under an optimized condition. High diffraction efficiency could be ascribed to the fast diffusion and efficient polymerization of monomers under interference light to generate refractive index modulation. The TSPEG modified photopolymer film could be successfully used for holographic memory.

  • In this study, polymer-fluorinated silica composite hollow fiber membranes were fabricated and applied to a membrane contactor for the recovery of methane dissolved in the anaerobic effluent. To prepare the composite membranes, porous hollow fiber substrates were fabricated with Ultem®, a commercial polyetherimide (PEI). Subsequently, fluorinated silica particles were synthesized and coated on the surface via strong covalent bonding. Due to the high porosity, our membrane showed a CH4 flux of 8.25 × 10-5 ㎤ (STP)/㎠·s at the liquid velocity of 0.03 m/s which is much higher that that of commercial polypropylene membrane designed for degassing processes. This is attributed to our membrane's high porosity as well as a superior surface hydrophobicity (120~122°) resulted from the coating with fluorinated silica nanoparticles.

  • To study the effects of structural difference and fatty acid chain length of glyceride, new dispersion agents having various glyceride structures such as mono-, di-, and tri-, were prepared using glycerol extracted from palm oil and fatty acid having various chain length ranges from 12 to 18. These dispersion agents were mixed with the rubber compounds and compared with conventional metal salt dispersion agents. Glyceride dispersion agent provided remarkable improvement in silica dispersion, compared to metal salt fatty acidic one, even though the viscosity of mixtures was relatively high due to low lubricating effect, and this was approved by mechanical properties, wear properties, and Payne effect. Also, the longer in chain length of fatty acid and the smaller in numbers of fatty acid, the dispersity of silica was improved.

  • Sulfonic acid (-SO3H) functionalized mesoporous silica containing HMS, SBA 15(S15), MCM 41(M41) were synthesized by post-synthesis and co-condensation method. Their catalytic performance is tested by dehydration reaction of D-xylose to furfural. As a result, good conversion and selectivity was obtained using water as an environmentally friendly solvent. Additionally, increased amounts of sulfuric acid in catalysts resulted in improved conversion of D-xylose. All of the acid-functionalized mesoporous silica showed higher selectivity than other solid acids such as ${\gamma}-Al_{2}O_{3}$ and zeolite.

  • Slow sand filtration was modified and applied for the determination of eliminating efficacy of various fungi and for recommending an easy approach to growers. After 1,500 liter filtration, Fusarium oxysporum was eliminated by several substrates such as activated charcoal (92.5% elimination), silica (90.8%), vermiculite (90.5%), sand (82.3%), perlite (50.4%), and hydroball (21.2%). Silica was able to eliminate several fungi by maximal ratio, which was corresponded to Fusarium oxysporum 120 cfu/mL. Collectotrichum lagenarium 98 cfu/mL. Phytophthora capsici 82 cfu/mL, Botrytis cinerea 62 cfu/mL, Pythium spp. 42 cfu/mL, and Sclerotinia ssp. 52 cfu/mL. In this case, the change of EC was minor and pH was maintained to about 7. In deep flow culture of 'Ddooksum Cheokchookmyeon' lettuce and 'Seokwang' tomato, silica-, activated charcoal-, and vermiculite-based filtration system successfully eliminated Fusarium oxysporum and Phytophthora capsici from the nutrient solution. As a result, these plants were not diseased by ten weeks after inoculation. With this system, growers can easily control the root-zone fungi in the recirculating hydroponic system.

  • In this study, the effect of natural minerals on the reaction kinetics for lignite-$CO_2$ gasification was investigated. After physical mixing of lignite from Meng Tai area with 5 wt% of each natural mineral catalysts among Dolomite, Silica sand, Olivine and Kaolin, $CO_2$ gasification was performed using TGA at each 800, $850^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$. The experimental data was analyzed with volumetric reaction model (VRM), shrinking core model (SCM) and modified volumetric reaction model (MVRM). MVRM was the most suitable among three models. As increasing the reaction temperature, the reaction rate constant became higher. With natural mineral catalysts, the reaction rate constant was higher and activation energy was lower than that of without catalysts. The lowest activation energy, 114.90 kJ/mol was obtained with silica sand. The highest reaction rate constant at $850^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ and lower reaction rate constant at $800^{\circ}C$ were obtained with Kaolin. Conclusively, the better catalytic performance could be observed with Kaolin than that of using other catalysts when the reaction temperature increased.

  • In this study, porous metal (O.D. = 10 mm, length = 10 mm, 316 L SUS, Mott Corp.) and ${\alpha}$-alumina tube (O.D. = 10 mm, length = 50 mm, Pall, German) support was modified with suspension sols, which were consisted of $3{\sim}4{\mu}m$ and 150 nm size of ${\alpha}$-alumina particle in the water or silica-zirconia colloidal sol. The porous support was fabricated by dip coating method for 5 seconds with suspension of alumina particles. After drying at $100^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, it was calcined at $550^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. It was repeated several times in order to decrease big pore on support. The surface roughness and largest pore size on the porous support was decreased by increasing coating times with $3{\sim}4{\mu}m$ size of ${\alpha}$-alumina particle and alumina coating with 150 nm size of ${\alpha}$-alumina particle served as further smoothening the surface and decreasing the pore size of the substrate. And the silica-zirconia membranes were successfully prepared on the modified porous metal and ${\alpha}$-alumina supports, and showed hydrogen permeance in the range of $1.8-8.4{\times}10^{-4}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}{\cdot}Pa^{-1}$ and $3.3-5.0{\times}10^{-5}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}{\cdot}Pa^{-1}$, respectively.
