  • The objective of this study is to propose efficient data fusion techniques feasible to the KOMPSAT-2 satellite images. The most widely used image fusion techniques, which are the high-pass filter (HPF), the intensity-hue-saturation-based (modified IHS), the pan-sharpened, and the wavelet-based methods, was applied to four KOMPSAT - 2 satellite images having different regional and seasonal characteristics. Each fusion result was compared and analyzed in spatial and spectral features, respectively. Quality evaluation of image fusion techniques was performed in both quantitative and visual analysis. The quantitative analysis methods used for this study were the relative global dimensional error (spatial and spectral ERGAS), the spectral angle mapper index (SAM), and the image quality index (Q4). The results of quantitative and visual analysis indicate that the pan-sharpened method among the fusion methods used for this study relatively has the suitable balance between spectral and spatial information. In the case of the modified IHS method, the spatial information is well preserved, while the spectral information is distorted. And also the HPF and wavelet methods do not preserve the spectral information but the spatial information.

  • We derived the resolution of the modified triangular interferometer and described the analysis about distance measurement using the one. Also, to demonstrate the feasibility of distance measurement using the modified triangular interferometer, the incoherent hologram of a two-point source with depth and its numerical reconstruction were presented. We demonstrated the possibility of the modified triangular interferometer as a three-dimensional display by recording and reconstructing the incoherent hologram of three-dimensional image.

  • In this paper, the deconvolution method utilizing a modified Wiener filter is applied for the enhancement of lateral resolution of ultrasonic B-scan Images. For this purpose, a phantom composed of wires which are 0.6mm of diameter and apart in the range between 3 to 9mm is constructed. The modified Wiener filter with optimal parameter is applied to the phantom for the analysis of ultrasonic image. The results obtained are as follows'When all parameters of the modified Wiener filter are optimal, the resolution of B-scan images is enhanced by 50 percent : Othenrise, the images are blurred, spilt at peak points, or noises are strengthened severely. When the point-spread function representing the characteristic function of the system is determined, the selection ranges of op- timum parameters may be narrowed. It is expected that the proposed method may be able to apply to clinic situations for more accurate image analysis by means of reducing the loss of important information.

  • Shape conversion coefficient and equivalent diameter for changing 2D image to 3D image by the Digital Image Process(DIP) have been suggested and modified particle size distribution curve has been showed. Couple of aggregates, like two different marine aggregates and two different crushed stones, have been employed. The measured flatness ratios of each aggregate were 0.30, 0.36, 0.47 and 0.83, respectively. Also, the conversion shape coefficients of each aggregate were determinded as 0.77, 0.78, 0.84 and 0.92. The size of aggregate has been modified by multiplying the shape conversion coefficient and the aggregate size from DIP. The modified gradation curve with modified volume and weight of aggregate has been suggested. Within the limited test results, DIP is one of useful to get the particle shape of aggregate with limitation of measuring errors and to apply the particle distribution curve.

  • To maintain improved image quality in mammography, the quality control process is performed using the ACR (American college of radiology) phantom. In addition, many studied were performed by fabricating the customized breast phantom to provide more information in mammography. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the image quality by designing the modified ACR phantoms. The five modified acrlylic ACR phantoms were designed by considering insert position and phantom thickness. The phantoms were consisted of 4.5, 3.0, and 1.5 cm in terms of phantom thickness, and 3.0, 2.0, and 0.5 cm in terms of insert position, respectively. The acquired images were evaluated by PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio), RMSE (root mean square error), CC (correlation coefficient), CNR (contrast to noise ratio), and COV (coefficient of variation). Based on the similarity analysis, the result is suitable between conventional and new designed phantoms. In addition, the CNR and COV results in terms of insert position showed that image quality for 0.5 cm was 2.3 and 27.4% improved compared with 2 and 3 cm, respectively. According to phantom thickness results, the CNR result for 1.5 cm and COV result for 4.5 cm were 50.1 and 62.7% improved compared with that those conditions. In conclusion, we confirmed that the image quality depends on the breast size and thickness through modified ACR phantom study.

  • In this paper, we studied resolution to the FBP and BFP image reconstruction algorithms for ultrasonic diffraction tomography. In order to analyze the resolution to the tomographic images which can be reconstructed from the modified FBP image reconstruction algorithm by using fixed coordinate system and BFP image reconstruction algorithm which is suitable for plane structure object, we derived ambiguity functions to these algorithms and then analyzed lateral and depth resolution through simulation respectively. Simulation results show that the lateral and depth resolution to the FBP image reconstruction algorithm and the BFP image reconstruction algorithm was determined 0.27 λ, 0.70 λ and 0.39 λ, 0.98 λ at the 3dB respectively. These results imply that modified FBP and BFP image reconstruction algorithms for diffraction tomography is useful in the tomographic image reconstruction.

  • The fundamental research for the mobile robot navigation using the numerical optimization method is presented. We propose an image-based visual servo navigation algorithm for a wheeled mobile robot utilizing a ceiling mounted camera. For the image-based visual servoing, we define the composite image Jacobian which represents the relationship between the speed of wheels of a mobile robot and the robot's overall speed in the image plane. The rotational speed of wheels of a mobile robot can be directly related to the overall speed of a mobile robot in the image plane using the composite image Jacobian. We define the mobile robot navigation problem as an unconstrained optimization problem to minimize the cost function with the image error between the goal position and the position of a mobile robot. In order to avoid the obstacle, the modified cost function is proposed which is composed of the image error between the position of a mobile robot and the goal position and the distance between the position of a mobile robot and the position of the obstacle. The performance was evaluated using the simulation.

  • Adaptive Gaussian filter (AGF) is a recently developed switching filter to remove salt and pepper noise. AGF first directly identifies pixels of gray levels 0 and 255 as noise pixels, and then only restored noise pixels using a Gaussian filter with adaptive variance based on the estimated noise density. AGF usually achieves better denoising effect in comparison with other filters. However, AGF still fails to obtain good denoising effect on images with noise-free pixels of gray levels 0 and 255, due to its severe false alarm in its noise detection stage. To alleviate this issue, a modified version of AGF is proposed in this paper. Specifically, the proposed filter first performs noise detection via an image block based noise density estimation and sequential noise density guided rectification on the noise detection result of AGF. Then, a modified Gaussian filter with adaptive variance and window size is used to restore the detected noise pixels. The proposed filter has been extensively evaluated on two representative grayscale images and the Berkeley image dataset BSDS300 with 300 images. Experimental results showed that the proposed filter achieved better denoising effect over the state-of-the-art filters, especially on images with noise-free pixels of gray levels 0 and 255.

  • The author has studied roentgenographic images of temporomandibular articulation using various conventional roentgenographies. The roentgenographic images have obtained by application of the contrast media on the glenoid fossa and condylar head in a human dry skull. Comparing the various roentgenograms by Modified Transcranial projection, A-P T.M. articulation projection, Reverse Towne projection, Mayer projection and Bregma-Menton projection. The author has drawn following results. 1. The sharp radiogaphic details were obtained by all technics used except the Bregma-Menton projection, which seemed to be impractical to the study of T.M.J. because of to be shortened the image of condylar head. 2. The best image of the condyle-fossa relationship was appeared by Modified Transcranial projection and better image was acquired by Orbito-Ramus projection, but there were all inferior in Reverse Towne projection, Mayer projection and Bregma-Menton projection. 3. In all of the above techniques, the radiographic images of condylar head were clear and were appeared to be the convex type in Modified Transcranial projection, the angled type in Orbito-Ramus and Reverse Towne projection, the flat type in Mayer projection and the distorted angled type in Bregma-Menton projection. 4. The radiographic image of condylar head was shortened in Bregma-Menton projection only and was magnified somewhat in other projection.

  • In this paper, we introduce modified integer transforms for lossless image compression and evaluate their performances for two-dimensional transforms. The two-dimensional extensions of the modified integer transforms show different performances in terms of coding efficiency and computational complexity. Thus, we measure performances for two-dimensional separable transforms and a two-dimensional non-separable transform. The separable modified integer transform used in H.264, the modified integer transform using the lifting scheme, and the non-separable transform in JPEG XR are evaluated in this paper. Also, experiments and their results are given. The experimental results indicate that the modified integer transform using the lifting scheme shows the best performance in terms of compression efficiency.
