  • Since the dredging reclaimed land consisting of soft ground is very weak in support, the difficult and complex factors should be considered in the design to calculate accurate bearing capacity of soft ground. Recently, various reinforcement construction methods of soft ground have been designed for dredged landfills, but the stabilities are predicted by calculating conventional Meyerhof (1974) equation for trafficability in soft ground. Conventional equations increase economic costs by underestimating bearing capacity of weak ground in order to ensure constructive safety, so a modified equation has been proposed from the literature. The paper attempts to experiment and compute important factors, such as stitching fiber and seam tensile strength of geotextiles, that are not theoretically considered and can be identified in the field. In addition, The evaluation of the bearing capacity of the modified equation is verified to be stable for trafficability through the plate bearing test performed on site.

  • Design equations to evaluate the bursting force in a post-tensioned anchorage zone have been introduced in many design codes, and one equation in AASHTO LRFD is widely used. However, this equation may not determine the bursting force exactly because it was designed on the basis of two-dimensional numerical analyses without considering various design parameters such as the duct hole and shape of the bearing plate. To improve the design equation, modification of the AASHTO LRFD design equation was considered. The behavior of the anchorage zone was investigated using three-dimensional linear elastic finite element analysis with design parameters such as bearing plate size and diameter of sheath hole. Upon the suggestion of a modified design equation for evaluating the bursting force in an anchorage block with a rectangular anchorage plate (Kim and Kwak 2018), additional influences of design parameters that could affect the evaluation of bursting force were investigated. An improved equation was introduced for determining the bursting force in an anchorage block with a circular anchorage plate, using the same procedure introduced in the design equation for an anchorage block with a rectangular anchorage plate. The validity of the introduced design equation was confirmed by comparison with AASHTO LRFD.

  • The cyclic plate load test were peformed to determine the behavior of reinforced soft ground with multiple layers of geogrid. Five series of test were conducted with varying the soil profile conditions which including the ground level, type of soil, and the thickness of each soil layer. The plate load test equipment was slightly modified to apply the cyclic load. Based on the cyclic plate load test results, the bearing capacity ratio(BCR), subbase modules, shear modules, the elastic rebound ratio, and reinforcing parameters are presented.

  • In this study, bolted joint made of Glass-Mat Reinforced Thermoplastics (GMT) specimen was under tensile loading to investigate the relation between joint strength and glass-fiber weight fraction of the flat plate specimen. The effect of molding conditions such as the initial size of a GMT charge and molding temperatures was investigated under plane strain condition. In consideration of the specimen geometry, minimum end distance and width of the specimen to induce the bearing fracture mode of the bolted joint were determined. And finally, the effect of the outer diameter of washer and clamping pressure on joint strength was also investigated. Since joint strength is dependent on the local glass-fiber weight fraction, experimentally measured strength was modified, considering its irregular values of the specimen molded under various processing conditions in order to obtain a reasonable correlation between the two.

  • This study was implemented to verify the feasibility of motor function recovery and the appropriate period for therapy. The research began with spinal laminectomy of 40 white rats of Sprague-Dawley breed and induced them spinal crush injury. Following results were obtained by using the modified Tarlov test (MTT), Basso, Beattle, Bresnahan locomotor rating scale (EBB scale) and modified inclined plate test (MIPT). First, the measurement using the MTT confirm that the most severe aggravation and degeneration of functions are observed two days after induced injury, and no sign of neuromotor function recovery. Second, better scores were achieved by open-ground movement group on BBB locomotor rating scale test, and weight-bearing on inclined plate group show better performance on MIPT. Third, both BBB and MIPT scale manifested the peak of motor function recovery during 16th day after the injury and turn into gradual recovery gradient during 16th to 24th. Fourth, the control group showed functional recovery, however, the level of recovery was less significant when compared with group open-ground movement group and weight-bearing on inclined plate group. Hence, it was clearly manifested that the lumbar region of the spinal cord had shown the best performance when its functions were measured after the execution of specific physical training; therefore it indicated the possibility of learning specific task even in damaged lumbar regions. Thus it is expected to come out with better and more effective functional recovery if concentrated physical therapy was applied starting 4 days after the injury till 16 days, which is the period of the most active recovery.

  • High speed rotating airflow inside a HDD chamber causes sub-micron scale disk vibration that could generate significant TMR problems in most of current HDD products. Many publications are presented for the reduction of airflow excitation. One of the most effective methods widely adopted in high-end HDD products is SqueezeAir Bearing Plate (SABP). However, because of its tight assembly clearance between the damper and disk, this method could not be easily implemented in volume production. This article presents a disk damper design that is modified to be feasible for volume production by virtue of a new airflow modeling method.

  • The governing design point of shallow foundation is not its bearing capacity but its settlemen and N-value by the SPT is one of the key parameters for settlement estimation. However, if the N-value is more than 50/30, such as 50/10 or 50/20, the N-vlaues are not blow count of 30cm depth penetration. In these cases, the estimated settlements have big difference with the measured values because the applied maximum N value for the settlement estimation is 50. Therefore, in this study, the modified method for N-value estimation is suggested. The settlements by four methods, which are based on Elastic Theory with application of modified N-value, are compared with the Origina Plate Load Test data. The same comparision was carried out with another seven Empirical Methods. The result of this study showed that the error range of settlement is decreased from 260.4~2136.5% to 20.3~272.7%. Among four methods which are based on Elastic Theory, the original method by Elastic Theory is the most accurate with the application of modified N-value. Among Empirical Methods, Terzaghi-Peck's(1948, 1967) modified method 1 is the most accurate with the application of modified N-value. The differences between the original method by Elastic Theory and Terzaghi-Peck's(1948, 1967) modified method 1 are neglectable.

  • The paper is to show the behavior of composit ground which is installed with sheet pile in soft soil improved by sand compaction pile. The results of load-settlement relationship, earth pressure, stress concentration characteristics, and final water content were obtained by centrifuge model test. Two cases of tests, installation of sheet pile on the corner and both side of the loading plate for the improved SCP ground which was designed twice of the footing width, were performed for the tests under the vertical and horizontal loading and both side of corner. Finite element program(CRISP) for sand compaction pile using elasto-plastic model and numerical analysis for soft soil using modified cam-clay constitutive equation were compared and analized with the results of model tests. The result of analysis show the increased bearing capacity of soil after, SCP and sheet pile was installed.

  • We obtain the mathematical model of the hard disk drive actuator system from the system response data of the finite element analysis or experimental results. System response data including the dynamics of the considered system are expressed as the mathematical model. It allows the dynamic analysis of the actuator system without resort to the repetitive finite element modeling work. Even though the dynamic characteristics of the system are affected somewhat by the structural modification and the change of the dynamic properties, we can use the modified size and material properties of the actuator system in the mathematical model to some extent. In this study, we express the mathematical model of the simplified rectangular plate first and then proceed to the actual hard disk drive actuator system.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect and short-term results of the modified Mau osteotomy designed by the author. Materials and Methods: Seventeen feet treated with newly designed osteotomy from 2003 to 2004 were included. We performed metatarsal osteotomy and distal soft tissue procedure on 17 feet (12 patients) and additional Akin osteotomy on 6 feet (4 patients). An oblique osteotomy was made from the neck in the dorsum, aiming proximal to the base of the first metatarsal with vertical short arm on the base. We performed long arm of osteotomy parellel to the acrylic plate which was supposed as ground plane. Preoperative radiographs and follow up radiographs at three month were used for radiologic evaluation. Results: Mean hallux valgus angle was $43.6^{\circ}$ and mean intermetatarsal angle was $20.4^{\circ}$ on preoperative weight bearing radiograph. Mean amount of correction of the hallux valgus angle was $37.5^{\circ}$ and intermetatarsal angle was $14.2^{\circ}$ at three months after operation. There was no fixation loss or malunion, and the clinical result was subjectively exellent. Conclusion: More proximal rotational axis can achieve sufficient intermetatarsal angle correction, and vertical arm can provide more stable contact. So this newly modified Mau osteotomy was considered as a good alternative procedure in the treatment of severe hallux valgus.
