One of the frequent problems in the stabilized gimbal system is the rejection of disturbances associated with moving components. Very often such disturbances have non-linear characteristics. In a typical gimbal system, each gimbal and platform are connected by a mutual bearing which induces inevitable friction. Particularly, the non-linear Coulomb friction causes position errors as well as slow responses that lead to unfavorable performance. In this paper, a modified PID controller that is augmented by Coulomb friction estimator is presented. Through constantly estimating the Coulomb friction torque, it is applied to the output of the existing PID controller. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is evaluated through a series of experiments.
The engine cooling system for a medium duty V6, 4.5 L diesel engine was modeled with a commercial code, GT-Cool in order to investigate the effect of controllable electric pump on the cooling performance and the fuel economy. The simulation results of the cooling system model with mechanical coolant pump were validated with experimental data. Two different types of electric pumps were implemented into the cooling system model and PID control for electric pump operation was incorporated into the simulation study. Based on the simulation result with electric pump, conventional thermostat hysteresis was modified to reduce pump operation for additional improvement of fuel economy, and then the benefit of electric pumps with modified thermostat hysteresis on fuel economy was demonstrated with the simulation. The predicted result indicates that the cooling system with electric pump and modified thermostat hysteresis can reduce pump power consumption by more than $99\%$ during the FTP 74 driving cycle.
A self tuning technique is derived for PID controllers which are widely used in industries. The tuning algorithm is based upon a fuzzy indirect reasoning method and an iterative technique. The fuzzy technique is considered to obtain ease and simplicity of tuning process. The PID gains for the first tuning action are determined by a method which is modified from the Ziegler-Nichols step response method. The first PID gains are determined to obtain a control performance so close to a design performance that the followed tuning process can be made effectively. The design parameters are given as time-domain variables which human is familiar with. The results of simulation studies show that the proped tuning method can produce an effective tuning for arbitaray design performances.
In this paper, we design a H^\infty servo controller for gauge control of tandem cold mill. To improve the performance of the AGC(Aotomatic Gauge Control) system based on the Taylor linearized model of tandem cold mill, the H^\infty servo controller is designed to satisfy robust stability, disturbance attenuation and robust tracking properties. The H^\infty servo controller problem is modified as an usual H^\infty control problem, and the solvability condition of the H^\infty servo problem depends on the solvability of the modified H^\infty control problem. Since this modified problem does not satisfied standard assumptions for the H^\infty control problem, it is solved by an LMI(Linear Matrix Inequality) technique. Consequently, the comparison between the H^\infty servo controller and the existing PID/FF(FeedForward) controller shows the usefulness of this study.
The problem of designing intelligent cruise control system for a longitudinal motion of an automobile, which is powered by internal combustion engines coupled to an automatic multispeed transmission, is considered. The basic concept is a vehicle-following system which maintains desired spacing between vehicles. This system actuates throttle with the information of the spacing error so as to maintain proper spacing and improve passenger ride comfort. In designing the controller, a modified controller, i.e, PID gain scheduling and fuzzy controller with fuzzy compensator was developed in order to overcome the nonlinearities of the automobile and obtain better performance. The computer simulation results illustrate that the better vehicle responses were obtained with the modified fuzzy controller and, under this controller, the vehicle responses were found to be relatively insensitive to parameter variations.
This paper presents the modelling of an MR damper system through extensive experimental studies. The hysteresis of the MR damper is modelled by using the improved Bouc-wen model. A test bed for experimental studies of measuring parameters of the MR damper is designed and implemented. Based on the experimental data, the Bouc-Wen Model is modified for the MR damper system. To check the modelling property, a vehicle suspension system is controlled using a PID controller for the verification of the MR damper model.
We deal with the sliding mode control using the time delay estimation. The time delay estimation is able to weaken the need for obtaining a quantitative plant model analogous to the real plant so the sliding mode control with a time delay estimation (SMCTE) is very suitable for plant such as SMA actuators whose quantitative model is difficult to obtain. We have already studied the application of the time delay control (TDC) to SMA actuators in other literature. Based on the previous study on the TDC, we developed the gain tuning method for the SMCTE, which results were nearly the same as the TDC. With respect to the step response, the SMCTE proved its predominance in a comparison with other control schemes such as the PID control and the relay control. As well as the contribution of the above control methodology, the model identification for SMA actuators has also been studied. The dynamics for an SMA actuator was newly derived using the modified Liang's model. The derived dynamics showed a continuity at the change of the phase transformation process but the original Liang's model could not.
A GA is one of the best method to find optimal value in searching area. A GA is driven by probabilistic selection that based on the survival of the fittest. So this algorithm need a huge solving time even if it can be used lots of optimizing problem such as structural design, machine learning, system's identification and so on. This GA's characteristic constrain the program to drive offline. Some studies try to use this algorithm on online or reduce the GA's running time with parallel GA or micro GA. Unfortunately these studies still didn't reduce amount of fitness solving. If the chromosome was imported to the system, it affected system's stability. And when the control system uses online GA, it also doesn't have enough learning time. In this study, try to find stability criterion to reduce the chromosome's affection and find the characteristic of the number of population and generation when GA was driven into the wide searching area.

As numerous sensors and actuators are used in many automated systems, various industrial networks are adopted for real-time distributed control. In order to take advantages of the networking, however, the network implementation should be carefully designed to satisfy real-time requirements considering network induced delays. This paper presents an implementation scheme of a networked control system via Profibus-DP network fur real-time distributed control. More specifically, the effect of the network induced delay on the control performance is evaluated on a Profibus-DP testbed. Also, two conventional PID gain tuning methods are slightly modified fur fouling controllers fur the networked control system. With appropriate choices for gains, it is shown that the networked control system can perform almost as well as the traditional control system.
