  • In this study, a modified Fuzzy C-Means algorithm with Gaussian weights (MFCM_GW) is presented for the problem of nonlinear blind channel equalization. The proposed algorithm searches for the optimal channel output states of a nonlinear channel based on received symbols. In contrast to conventional Euclidean distance in Fuzzy C-Means (FCM), the use of the Bayesian likelihood fitness function and the Gaussian weighted partition matrix is exploited in this method. In the search procedure, all possible sets of desired channel states are constructed by considering the combinations of estimated channel output states. The set of desired states characterized by the maxima] value of the Bayesian fitness is selected and updated by using the Gaussian weights. After this procedure, the Bayesian equalizer with the final desired states is implemented to reconstruct transmitted symbols. The performance of the proposed method is compared with those of a simplex genetic algorithm (GA), a hybrid genetic algorithm (GA merged with simulated annealing (SA):GASA), and a previously developed version of MFCM. In particular, a relative]y high accuracy and a fast search speed have been observed.

  • In this paper we introduce a modified objective function for fuzzy c-means clustering with logistic regression model in the presence of noise cluster. The logistic regression model is commonly used to describe the effect of one or several explanatory variables on a binary response variable. In real application there is very often no sharp boundary between clusters so that fuzzy clustering is often better suited for the data.

  • In the paper, a new design method of rule-based fuzzy modeling is proposed for model identification of nonlinear systems. The structure indentification is carried out, utilizing fuzzy c-means clustering. Fuzzy-neural networks composed back-propagation algorithm and linear fuzzy inference method, are used to identify parameters of the premise and consequence parts. To obtain optimal linguistic fuzzy implication rules, the learning rates and momentum coefficients are tuned automatically using a modified complex method.

  • When only global or local features of images are considered, the segmented results exhibit inevitable errors. To reduce these errors, first we divide the image into uniform and nonuniform regions by considering the local properties of the image. Next we obtain the segmented results by applying the Fuzzy C-means (FCM) algorithm to the picture and determining to which uniform reigons each pixel of the nonuniform regions belongs. To reduce the computational burden and memory required for the FCM algorithm, the equations used for FCM algorithm are modified. The performance of the proposed method is quantitatively compared to existing ones using only global or local features of the picture. Computer simualtion result shows that the segmented results obtained by applying the proposed method are superior to existing ones.

  • In this paper, blind equalization using a modified Fuzzy C-Means algorithm with Gaussian Weights (MFCM_GW) is attempted to the heavy noise-corrupted channels. The proposed algorithm can deal with both of linear and nonlinear channels, because it searches for the optimal channel output states of a channel instead of estimating the channel parameters in a direct manner. In contrast to the common Euclidean distance in Fuzzy C-Means (FCM), the use of the Bayesian likelihood fitness function and the Gaussian weighted partition matrix is exploited in its search procedure. The selected channel states by MFCM_GW are always close to the optimal set of a channel even the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is heavily corrupted in it. Simulation studies demonstrate that the performance of the proposed method is relatively superior to existing genetic algorithm (GA) and conventional FCM based methods in terms of accuracy and speed.

  • In this study, we introduce a new architecture of fuzzy inference system. In the fuzzy inference system, we use Fuzzy C-Means clustering algorithm to form the premise part of the rules. The membership functions standing in the premise part of fuzzy rules do not assume any explicit functional forms, but for any input the resulting activation levels of such radial basis functions directly depend upon the distance between data points by means of the Fuzzy C-Means clustering. As the consequent part of fuzzy rules of the fuzzy inference system (being the local model representing input output relation in the corresponding sub-space), four types of polynomial are considered, namely constant, linear, quadratic and modified quadratic. This offers a significant level of design flexibility as each rule could come with a different type of the local model in its consequence. Either the Least Square Estimator (LSE) or the weighted Least Square Estimator (WLSE)-based learning is exploited to estimate the coefficients of the consequent polynomial of fuzzy rules. In fuzzy modeling, complexity and interpretability (or simplicity) as well as accuracy of the obtained model are essential design criteria. The performance of the fuzzy inference system is directly affected by some parameters such as e.g., the fuzzification coefficient used in the FCM, the number of rules(clusters) and the order of polynomial in the consequent part of the rules. Accordingly we can obtain preferred model structure through an adjustment of such parameters of the fuzzy inference system. Moreover the comparative experimental study between WLSE and LSE is analyzed according to the change of the number of clusters(rules) as well as polynomial type. The superiority of the proposed model is illustrated and also demonstrated with the use of Automobile Miles per Gallon(MPG), Boston housing called Machine Learning dataset, and Mackey-glass time series dataset.

  • In this paper, a Modified Fuzzy C-Means algorithm with Gaussian Weights(MFCM_GW) is presented for nonlinear blind channel equalization. The proposed algorithm searches the optimal channel output states of a nonlinear channel from the received symbols, based on the Bayesian likelihood fitness function and Gaussian weighted partition matrix instead of a conventional Euclidean distance measure. Next, the desired channel states of a nonlinear channel are constructed with the elements of estimated channel output states, and placed at the center of a Radial Basis Function(RBF) equalizer to reconstruct transmitted symbols. In the simulations, binary signals are generated at random with Gaussian noise. The performance of the proposed method is compared with those of a simplex genetic algorithm(GA), a hybrid genetic algorithm(GA merged with simulated annealing(SA): GASA), and a previously developed version of MFCM. It is shown that a relatively high accuracy and fast search speed has been achieved.

  • The paper concerns Fuzzy C-Means clustering based fuzzy neural networks (FCM-FNN) and the optimization of the network is carried out by means of hierarchal fair competition-based parallel genetic algorithm (HFCPGA). FCM-FNN is the extended architecture of Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN). FCM algorithm is used to determine centers and widths of RBFs. In the proposed network, the membership functions of the premise part of fuzzy rules do not assume any explicit functional forms such as Gaussian, ellipsoidal, triangular, etc., so its resulting fitness values directly rely on the computation of the relevant distance between data points by means of FCM. Also, as the consequent part of fuzzy rules extracted by the FCM-FNN model, the order of four types of polynomials can be considered such as constant, linear, quadratic and modified quadratic. Since the performance of FCM-FNN is affected by some parameters of FCM-FNN such as a specific subset of input variables, fuzzification coefficient of FCM, the number of rules and the order of polynomials of consequent part of fuzzy rule, we need the structural as well as parametric optimization of the network. In this study, the HFCPGA which is a kind of multipopulation-based parallel genetic algorithms(PGA) is exploited to carry out the structural optimization of FCM-FNN. Moreover the HFCPGA is taken into consideration to avoid a premature convergence related to the optimization problems. The proposed model is demonstrated with the use of two representative numerical examples.
