The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of exterior look and interior space of Boutique hotels in Prague and to identify how the tradition and the modern styles were integrated in each element. The subjects of this study were 12 tradition and modern style integrated hotels in Prague. From the collected data, the followings were investigated; what are traditional and modern elements, how they are integrated, and what the ratio of the tradition and the modern style is. The results are as follows. First, regarding the level of integration of tradition and modernity in Boutique hotels in Prague, exterior look showed conservativeness and interior space showed innovation. Second, in the conservative combination of exterior look, the traditional facade made conflicts with the modernity of the signage but the expression was limited to the modern expression of façade and signage maintaining the traditional form. Facades were modernized with the limitation such as not to interfere its traditional atmosphere and signs were designed to be compatible with facade. Third, in the innovative integration between the traditional and the modern of interior lobby, they partially maintained traditional elements or reinterpreted the traditional elements in modern terms in ceiling, walls, columns and windows and used modern expressions in most of ornamental elements.

The vocabulary of modern grand hotels' interior designs reflects western design patterns, showing its nostalgia for modern architecture. And it also contains the trace of past designs implanted by others then, expressing the hardships of Korean history. Like this, the past architectural style distorted under the Japanese imperialistic rule has continued to exist until now without any significant changes, because there has been little effort to figure out the history of modern interior designs. And also there has been the lack of data and aesthetic descriptions about the modern interior designs that contain the historical nature of society. Therefore, this study will review the interior design of modern buildings, which trace back to the fawning of the Korean Interior Design. And it aims to understand the hotel interior's expressive characteristics and historical meanings by paying a particular attention to its lost parts. And it also alms to have a significant meaning in taking the first step toward a clue of the history of Korean modern interiors by systematically putting in order the ever-disappearing materials of modern hotel interiors.

Ecological traces appearing in contemporary architecture are based on modern architecture and most aspects on the contemporary architecture are related with the successive trend or break of the modern architecture. The concept of environment in the modern age has established clear destination, as it has been considered as nature. The architecture under a mechanical world view in the modem age has sustained the opposing connection with nature as environment. However, there have been architects maintaining the sympathy with nature in that vortex. This trend has been regarded as same context as ecological architecture and estimated to the outpost of ecological characteristics appearing in the contemporary architecture. This study is to make it clear that the ecological manifestation in the contemporary architecture is based on the ecology in the modem architecture through considering ecological ideals of architects in the modern architecture and considering space composition and structural properties in the modern architecture of ecological paradigm. The scope of this study contains spacial analysis, design strategy, and design types of organic architecture in nature, which has appeared from the modern age. First, the division into period is carried out according to the organic tendency of non-mainstream in the modern architecture: Arts and Crafts Movement, Art Nouveau, Sezession, Expressionism, Organic Architecture, Regionalism, Internationalism. Therefore, this study is significant to be on the search for a start to suggest ecological point of view to architectural space in modern architecture and is search organic characteristics for ecological characteristics in modern architecture; organic relation, thermal buffer space, regionalism, multi-layer, energy efficiency.

As people abroad have been much interested in the usage of modern architecture from the early days, many researches about various methods of using them have been progressed. In Korea, with the need to protect the modern architecture through active usage of them in the dimension of protecting the disappearing history, at present, many modern architectures were renovated and used. This research is to find out the sense of direction about the changes of design of the renovated modern architectures in Korea by analyzing the design changes after the renovations in Korea and abroad. Under the limitation of the modern architecture renovation case in Korea, Japan and China, the changes of design after the modern architecture renovation in Korea and aborad were analyzed by the analysis of the ways of remodelling for each case according to the case analyzing frame. Based on the reasons of renovations which had purpose of preserving social history with many other various reasons in common in both cases of Korean modern architecture remodelling and abroad, the common direction of design is to meet new with old to preserve the special image though they did it in different ways. However, different from the case of Japan and China which are coexisting present and past in space, Korean case focused too much on outside, which resulted in only outside designs. In the case of Korea, the past should have mutual understanding to have the firm space image by forming unique interior space culture through the architectural grafting the present in the past not only in the outside space but also in the indoor space. In another words, for the various changes of design in Korean modern architecture renovations, a systematic research should be done about the interior spaces of present architecture and modern architecture.

The purpose of this research is to examine changes in Japanese fashion design through analysis of the background and characteristics of 'Japanesque Modern'. With the advent of globalization and pressures to enhance international competitiveness, key players in both Japanese government and industry feel an urgent need to establish a distinctive brand for its products. 'Japanesque Modern' was launched in January 2006 as a nationwide campaign through the support of the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). 'Japanesque Modern' strives to be a national movement, enhancing Japan's brand image while promoting continuous industrial innovation. 'Japanesque Modern' unites Japanese culture, design, and aesthetics with advanced technology, bringing traditional concepts to enrich contemporary life styles. In order to exemplify the 'Japanesque Modern' ideal, existing market products and content that reflect the concept were selected for the 'Japanesque Modern Collection' by the Japanesque Modern Council. In making these selections, the Council emphasized criteria based on three Japanese spiritual values: Craftsmanship; Manner; and Hospitality. As a result, three designs concepts have emerged in the 'Japanesque Modern Collection': the 'convergent method'; the 'conversion method'; and the 'emphasis method'. This research will explore these design concepts and their relationship to 'Japanesque Modern'.

The purpose of this thesis is to study on the source, the introductive process and the phenomenon of the regional tendency into Korean modern interior design. To achieve the purpose of this study, the methods and contents are as follows : 1. Explaining the regionalism in the architecture as the source of the regional tendency. 2. This study attempts to analyze the styles and the images of the exterior and interior design of modern Korean houses since 1960s, and to understand the characteristics of Korean design by analyzing the consistant and changing factors in the styles and images of modern Korean houses. The photos of 101 houses were used for content-analysis approach. The result shows that the most dominant exterior style of modern Korean houses has been changed from modernism to late-modernism and it brought some changes in the images with increase of deconstructivism and post-modernism style. While modernism has been consistantly the most dominant style in the interior design of modern Korean houses with unified, urbane, masculine and unpartitioned images. It means that modernism style shown in modern Korean houses expresses certain consistant images, which can be defined as a characteristic of modern Korean house desigv.

The superimposition of the Russian constructivist architectural design is one of the notable transforming techniques of conventional design principles. The main objective of this paper is to analyse the superimposed space in the modern fashion design based on the techniques and characteristics of superimposition appeared in Russian constructivism architectural space. The artistic characteristics of the superimposed design in the modern fashion design can be determined by codes of dynamics, sense of space, rhythmical sense, communications and tension of the dress. Through this study, it was found that superimposition of the Russian constructivist architectural design in the modern fashion design has influenced the modern fashion design space in the forms of dynamics with directive sense, vitality through transparency, uniformity with geometric interpenetrates, intensive visual attraction created by duplicity, communication between human body and clothes, creation of transformative beauty and enhancement of structural volume on clothes.

Scandinavian design has special meaning in design history. Especially the Swedish designers have developed elegant and humane design style by combining the functionalism originated in Germany in the beginning of 20th century with their own crafts tradition. Now 'Swedish Modern' or 'Swedish Grace' is regarded as the most preferrable style for modern industrial society. American design as well as European design has been much changed under the influence of this democratic, simple and beautiful style. To find out the essential qualities of Swedish design style, I want to investigate the history of modern Swedish design and the design mechanism in Swedish corporates. Also I want to introduce the design education system in Sweden, which has contributed to developing contemporary Swedish design philosophy.
