Objective: To review the clinical basis of the Sa-Ahm 5 Element acupuncture originated about 360 years ago, papers and books were researched. Methods: Total of 58 books and papers ranging from ancient Huang Di nei jing to modern Bio Medical Acupuncture for Pain Management were investigated to study the clinical practice of it. Results: It could be practiced differently depending upon the viewpoints of diagnosis. They are ranging from theories of the greater-less of Yin and Yang, 7 emotions, organs- visceras, 8 diagnostic criteria, and pulse diagnosis to meridian circulation. Conclusions: It needs to be set clinical guidelines by which to practice Sa-Ahm acupuncture though it is nowadays mostly-used method in accordance with practitioner's viewpoints.
Objectives: In modern society, many people have low back pain (LBP) and spinal diseases. About 80% of them experience severe LBP more than once in their lifetime. We can find studies on many Korean medicine-based treatments, such as acupuncture treatment for LBP and exercise therapy, which are effective in reducing the symptoms. This study focuses on the combined effect of both Korean medicine and exercise therapy for treating LBP. Method: For this review, we searched for articles focusing on pain and disability recovery in pre-clinical and clinical studies of extension and flexion exercise therapy related to LBP. The search databases were as follows: PubMed, Google Scholar, and seven Korean electronic databases (Korea Citation Index (KCI), Korean studies Information Service System (KISS), Research Information Service System (RISS), Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS), DBPIA, National Digital Science Library (NDSL), and KOREAMED). The keywords were as follows: Korean Medicine, back pain, flexion exercise, extension exercise, McKenzie method, McKenzie exercise, Williams' flexion exercise, and Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy. Results & Conclusions: This review shows the usefulness of flexion and extension exercises for LBP treatment and effective patient education, but further studies are necessary.
Single photon emission computed tomography(SPECT) and positron emission tomography(PET) are modern imaging techniques that allow for both qualitative and quantitative assessment of hemodynamic changes in cerebrovascular diseases. SPECT has been becoming an indispensable method to investigate regional cerebral blood flow because equipment and isotope are easily available in most general hospitals. Acetazolamide stress SPECT has also been proved to be useful to evaluate the cerebrovascular reserve of occlusive cerebrovascular diseases and to select surgical candidate. PET has gained wide spread clinical use in the evaluation of the hemodynamic and metabolic consequences of extracranial or intracranial arterial obstructive disease despite its complexity and limited availability. PET has been established as an invaluable tool in the pathophysilogy investigation of acute ischemic stroke. The potentials, limitations, and clinical applications of SPECT and PET in various cerebrovascular diseases will be discussed in this article with reviews of literatures.
Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders experienced by modern people, and treatment is often not adequate due to various limitations. Digital therapeutics for insomnia are expected to play a revolutionary role in supplementing and satisfying unmet needs in real-world clinical treatment. Digital therapeutics for insomnia were developed based on cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia, which is the first standard treatment for insomnia. The effectiveness of digital therapeutics for insomnia developed by several companies has been proven through well-designed clinical research. Various approaches have been used for practical application of digital therapeutics for insomnia. Thus far, meaningful results have been drawn, but there are areas that need to be improved upon based on real-world evidence. Sleep researchers need to validate the safe and effective application of digital therapeutics for the treatment of insomnia.

This study focuses on discussing several issues that we encounter when we 'modernize' the fundamental theories of Korean Medicine(KM): It is pertinent to set the boundaries of the "fundamental theories" of the KM. The boundaries can be set based on: a) setting the medicine and the philosophy of medicine apart and b) re-evaluating the traditional theories of KM based on the needs of the modern practitioners of KM. The fundamental theories of KM should focus on how effectively they can observe, explain, and predict the clinical cases. The clinical cases and observations should not be distorted in order to satisfy the theory. "The modernization of KM" can be defined as the change in traditional medicine to fit the needs of the contemporary world, while not losing the focus and the nature of the KM. The fundamental theories of KM will play a key role in modernizing the KM, as the focus and the inherent nature of the KM comes from these fundamental theories. The modernization of the fundamental theories of KM will be crucial to both possible models of future healthcare system-the plural healthcare system, or the western medicine-centric integrated healthcare system. The modernization will also help in advancing the future medical studies. The key to modernization of the fundamental theories of the KM is in translating the key terms of KM in modern light. As a solution, this study suggests paying attention to the 'scientific metaphors', and especially to the 'theory-constitute metaphors' among those. More in-depth studies need to be done on these.

Modern Objectification of Pulse Diagnosis, One of the Four Diagnosis Method of Oriental Medicine, is necessarily project to improving Oriental medical clinic status and quality by standardization of diagnosis database. At that, accurate measurement equipment or devices(sensor, system and instruments, etc,) to exactly detect MacSang(脈診 : the parameter and subject of pulse diagnosis) have not developed yet. Existing Pulse diagnosis devices are not satisfy clinical needs and medical equipments quality. We study for pulse diagnosis system, that CD is satisfying oriental medical clinic needs, is ensuring accuracy and reappearance to support in clinical diagnosis and treatment, is guaranteeing the quality of medical equipments. theoretical base and convenience.

This is a preliminary study for examining the identity issue of the current Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM). In order to examine the identity issue, it is necessary to understand "what" current TKM is. The current TKM has been formed in the complicated historical settings and the newly formed academic geography of modern times, completely different from those of the traditional era. This paper took diachronic and synchronic approaches in order to understand the current TKM. In the process of modernization and scientization of the TKM-which had begun in the early twentieth century-the western medical knowledge merged into the TKM. Also, as the College education of the TKM began after the Liberation from the Japanese colonial rule, the TKM scholars accepted the western medical department system to develop the TKM into professional knowledge. Meanwhile, since the late 1970s, the TKM has been influenced by the modern Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and the TCM knowledge also merged into the TKM. And recently, the research methodology of the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), and the clinical research technique of the western medicine-like Evidence based Medicine (EBM)-are affecting the scientization and clinical study of the TKM. The current TKM has been formed as a result of the hybridization of these different knowledges. These changes in the TKM were inevitable for the survival of it in the fast changing world. But these changes brought with them problems. Among those, the identity issue is the most important and crucial.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the current status of and seek for measures to activate Korean medicine in stroke care. Methods: This is an e-mail survey targeting the members of Korean medical doctors registered at the association of Korean medicine. The project team of the society of stroke on Korean medicine for the development of clinical practice guideline for stroke has devised the items for the questionnaire. The survey was conducted for 15 days in November 2016. Results: The percentage of the respondents who have treated patients with stroke for the past month was 11.2% in the acute phase, 20.5% in the convalescent phase, and 32.4% in the chronic phase. Approximately 80% of the respondents answered they had a decrease in the number of patients compared to 10 years ago, regardless of the stroke phase. Most of the respondents were using Western medicine together with traditional Korean medicine for physical examination. Acupuncture and herbal medicine were the main therapeutic interventions. The two measures chosen by the most respondents to activate the Korean medicine usage for stroke care were the expansion of the insurance coverage (34.9%) and the generation of evidence on the effectiveness of traditional Korean medicine (25.1%) Conclusion: It is necessary to actively show the role of the Korean medicine through the establishment of the evidence on the effectiveness of Korean medicine and the promotion based on the evidence. In addition, optimal treatment methods should be derived based on the traditional knowledge and modern scientific research and the methods should be educated to every Korean medical clinics and hospitals so that they can be implemented in clinical practice. At the same time, the government should provide policy support to ensure that the optimal treatment can be timely and appropriately implemented.

Pulse diagnosis is one of the typical examination methods in traditional oriental medicine. Pulse type classification is a major element of this diagnosis. There are more than 20 pulse types which have each clinical significance. However, pulse type's indications are implicative and obscure. In this study, we reviewed string pulse which is often diagnosed in Traditional Korean Medicine by analysis of Traditional Oriental Medical Literatures and modern medical papers. String pulse is taut and stiff pulse with high tension and low softness. It appears in 'blood vessel endothelial dysfunction', 'autonomic imbalance', 'arteriosclerosis'. Persistent string pulse can bring about cardiovascular or central nervous disease.
Objective: Although the government acknowledged Korean Medical Doctors as official health care providers since 1951, criticism regarding its modernity persisted. This paper focuses on the medical dispute between Korean and Western Medicine in 1950s risen from the problem of modernization of Korean Medicine. Method: This paper looked into the medical dispute between Korean and Western Medicine in 1950s through "EE LIM". "EE LIM" is a scholarly journal published by Korean Medical doctor Bae Won-Sik. Articles regarding the medical dispute between Korean and Western Medicine were selected, categorized and analyzed. Result: The main questions against Korean Medicine were: whether it was scientific or not, and whether there was a possibility of systematization. Several opinions were brought up on these issues. 1) Some people criticized Korean Medicine as being unscientific based on modern science. 2) Others emphasized the identity of Korean Medicine against the critics. 3) Another group of people wanted to study Korean Medicine using modern methods and obtain merits from both sides. Conclusion: The different understanding of the term 'science' led to diverse discussions on the direction of Korean Medicine's progression. The narrow meaning of science only considers Korean Medicine as an object of modern scientific and medical study. But if the meaning is broadened, containing empirical aspects, Korean Medicine can be included as a category of science based on its clinical utility.
