  • In this study, we surveyed historical housing settlements of Hwangjon in Bonghwa-a clan village in Youngnam district which was formed in the Chosun Dynasty. We observe the relationships among the spatial layout of clan villages, the water flows and the family hierarchies as follows; (1) when a clan village was initially formed, the water flow, which is the phylosophical foundation of Poong Soo, was the most important factor for determining the original location; (2) as villages prosper, the water flow and the family hierarchy still played an important role in determining the following geological locations; (3) in modern age, however, the water flow and the family hierarchy lost the role in detrmining the geological locations; (4) consequently, in present days, each household becomes isolated from the village. Reflecting on these observations, for village to be maintained, we conclude that we need novel practical and cohesive village forming drives that can replace the water flows and the family hierarchy in the past.

First of all, in apparel, the Victorian pattern transformed into geometrical form had much relative importance, and secondly, in the home interior, the Victorian pattern was expressed realistically or it was represented more boldly and complexly with new materials or techniques introduced. Thirdly, in fashion accessories, decorative nature was shown in intense design with the real description of the Victorian flower pattern and brilliant colors. With these results, it was found out that when the Victorian pattern was applied in the modern textile product designs, it was the factor that could be expected to make a high value added suitable with the modern sense, and it was the pattern with developmental potential with its unlimited use range. Therefore, based on this study, it is considered that the development of textile product designs utilizing the Victorian pattern and academic research, reorganizing the Victorian pattern in accordance with the modern design should be continued.

  • The images signifying flight in modern costumes are not made of one characteristic but the combination of complex meanings. Among the distinctive features some of them are as follows. First, the flying styles found in the costumes showed the birds as agents which sent human spirit to the celestial body. By simplifying the images of the wings connecting the present age with the heavenly body, the transforming emotions towards rhythm, direction, and organic curves transcending the real objectively constitutes a new space for expression. Second, colors appeal directly to man's emotions and incites emotional responses. The flying was shown in lines and colors. By using horizontal , vertical, oblique, and spiral lines and contrasted and paralleled colors, man's desire to fly dwells in newly colored space by reflecting speculative emotion through uniting surface. Third, the flying except for the costumes can be found in the advertisement through model's pose and camera technique, the flying itself is described through model's pose, the materials of the costumes, details, and sustaining stuffs. This symbolizes man's wish towards the unknown world vividly and dynamically. As discussed above the spirit of flying was, when expressed distinctively , in accordance with the varying cultural traits and transitions. The shape made by the vitality of symbolizing flying birds and animals along with the flying in the natural aspects such as wind and cloud were reappeared, simplified and symbolized , in modern costumes as consituting a new modeling space.

  • Since fashion is considered to be a cultural product and belongs to the formative art as well, the changes in fashion reflect those of society. Modern fashion has emerged from the period when people would follow the popular fashion uniformly, and moved toward the age of diversity, expressing not only the inner desires and aesthetic sensibility of individuals but also the freedom from formality and traditional restrictions. This kind of changes in expression became important motives for modern dress design following the present cultural phenomena, and, so called "outerwearization" of the undergarment or "infra apparel" exemplifies this situation. Corset especially has been playing a vital role in exaggerating and emphasizing the beauty of female body and correction of its shape. Today, one can frequently witness corset in street fashion along with brassier, Its sister concept. This "outerwearization" of the undergarment is supplanted as a syndrome, and it is defined as "supra syndrome" using "supra" as the opposite meaning to "infra". This unique phenomenon of modern fashion cannot be explained by a single social aspect, but as a mixed state of eroticism, fetishism, feminism, demonstrationists and expressionism among several current phenomena. The advent of "supra syndrome" and its cultural background were illustrated and stand-out "supra syndrome" exhibited by many world-renowned designers were analyzed in this study. As the result of study, six design pieces were developed and produced in three groups, based on different corset motifs. This study reaffirms that creativity of design is limitless and the imaginative abilities alone cannot accomplish higher level of design and development of works of fashion unless they are accompanied by the understanding of historical background, periodical circumstances and cultural phenomena. In this study, utilizing the modern apparatus such as computer and the advent of the modern technology was also found helpful in creative fashion design process.

  • With their complex structure that includes a thin disc, spiral arms, and often a bar, galaxies have been regarded as something beyond the human perceptions. Hence, the studies on galaxy formation in the 20th century have almost exclusively based on schematic scenarios. With markedly improved knowledge on cosmology over the last couple of decades, we have finally acquired a base from which galaxy formation can be studied from the first principles of physics. I review the modern history of the study of galaxy formation and present some preliminary results from the most recent numerical simulations that provide more realistic pictures of galaxy formation than was available ever before. In terms of galaxy formation, the age of scenarios is fading away, while the age of physical understanding is rising over the horizon.

  • This study attempted to present the direction of the documentation strategy to lay the foundation for preserving and using the modern and contemporary publishing culture in Daegu. To this end, the authors applied the phase of the "documentation area definition and preliminary analysis" suggested in Hackman's model. In the preliminary analysis phase, the authors investigated the cases of documentation on specific topics and conducted interviews with those concerned with documenting the publishing culture of Daegu. The findings of interviews were presented by the categories, such as "the value of Daegu's modern and contemporary publishing culture," "the object and method of collection," "documentation group," and "difficulties and limitations." With these findings, the authors proposed the main elements of a documentation strategy and revised it based on the feedback from two archivists. The proposed elements consist of the purpose, temporal, geographical, and morphological ranges, roles by group, reference sources, prior work, and the consideration for collection and operation. The preliminary analysis of this study will serve as a foundation for preserving and transmitting Daegu's publishing culture.
