It was the era, from 1876 to 1910, that some dramatic changes, including an influx of foreign dyes and the beginning of the modern dyeing manufacture, happened in Korea. This paper explores what dyes were sold in the market in this period, who was the main seller of the goods, and how the dyers produced their products. A wide range of natural dye stuffs coexisted with the various kinds of aniline dyes, alizarin dye and synthetic indigo in the market. Coloring materials had been sold by hwapi-jeon, a group of official merchants who acquired a privilege of monopoly from the government. However, the dyes were also traded by sang-jeon and yakguk merchants in the nineteenth century. Most of the synthetic dyes sold in Korea were produced in Germany or in Japan later, and imported in large amount by Chinese, Japanese and German merchants. Yet there also existed Korean merchants and peddlers who sold the goods to the local consumers. Dyers were male and female who belonged to the middle class. They received the orders and payments from the government or merchants. Not only did they dye textiles, threads, cotton, paper and leather, but they also redyed clothes. Indigo dyers were differentiated from other dyers. Modern dyeing manufacture, which was presumably forced to keep pace with the productivity of the weaving process, appeared in the 1900s. It was a branch of the modern weaving manufacture.
Acupuncture therapy has been proved to be effective for diverse diseases, symptoms, and conditions in numerous clinical trials. The growing popularity of acupuncture therapy has triggered the development of modern acupuncture-like stimulation devices (ASDs), which are equivalent or superior to manual acupuncture with respect to safety, decreased risk of infection, and facilitation of clinical trials. Here, we aim to summarize the research on modern ASDs, with a focus on featured devices undergoing active research and their effectiveness and target symptoms, along with annual publication rates. We searched the popular electronic databases Medline, PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science, and analyzed English-language studies on humans. Thereby, a total of 728 studies were identified, of which 195 studies met our inclusion criteria. Electrical stimulators were found to be the earliest and most widely studied devices (133 articles), followed by laser (44 articles), magnetic (16 articles), and ultrasound (2 articles) stimulators. A total of 114 studies used randomized controlled trials, and 109 studies reported therapeutic benefits. The majority of the studies (32%) focused on analgesia and pain-relief effects, followed by effects on brain activity (16%). All types of the reviewed ASDs were associated with increasing annual publication trends; specifically, the annual growth in publications regarding noninvasive stimulation methods was more rapid than that regarding invasive methods. Based on this observation, we anticipate that the noninvasive or minimally invasive ASDs will become more popular in acupuncture therapy.
This paper analyzed the modern trends and the present state of kitchen furniture and electric appliances depending on the advancement in IOT technology, in order to contribute to seeking a method of approaching consumers as an effective way for kitchen furniture and electric appliance companies to develop IOT products. Prior to analysis, the chronological transitions of Korean kitchen furniture and examined the effects of Korea's own emotions and characteristics on modern kitchen. For this study, the changes in Korean kitchen space were explored, based on previous studies, recent trend magazines, articles and professional books and the trends of modern kitchen furniture were observed. Also, the concept of IOT technology was considered and then the tendencies of modern IOT kitchen furniture and electric appliances were analyzed. The case study targeted the recent three-year trends of two types of domestic kitchen furniture and small-sized IOT kitchen electric appliances, which are sold, or have been introduced on foreign online stores and have been unveiled at CES Electric Appliances Exhibition. As a result of the study, it was found that many foreign countries, including the US have been developing various IOT kitchen electric appliances. The enterprise concept is to change kitchen with their IOT products, not changing future kitchen with IOT technology. This implies that approaches to product development may change. Moreover, it was recognized that for kitchen design, characteristics of product users need to be considered, according to Korean ideology.
Koreans began to undertake the conservation of their art and architectural artifacts approximately fifty years ago after modern concept of conservation were introduced by japanese during the Japanese Colonial Period(1910-1945). But still the modern concept of conservation is not clear to many Korean conservators because they have been concerned about conservation techniques to recover the original from of the remains be destroyed. Also, Korean conservation practice has neglected the philosophical issues and ethics of conservation. So, in this article, I described various terms referring to 'conservation' which have been used in western countries, Japan, China, and Korea, and compared their similarities and differences to have more clear idea on the modern concept of conservation. In the next chapter, I summarized several theoretical issues which had been discussed among western conservators over the centuries. Specially, I described closely the modern issues and ethics which have been presented in the twentieth century. As many conservation projects in Korea have resulted unsatisfactorily or been suspended altogether, because lacking a coherent theoretical dialogue on conservation and discussing an ethical issues of conservation. Therefore, I believe that more vigorous dialogue on these issues in Korea may lead conservators to consider their tasks in a more productive light, and the Korean artifacts may preserve well.
In this study, we selected 12 typical traditional restaurants in Korea and China and analyzed their application of traditional design approach. Through this analysis, we tried to explore similarities and differences of Korean restaurants and Chinese restaurants in order to determine the preferable way to express their own traditional design. We categorized traditional design approach as cultural elements, designing method, coloring and materials. The results are as follows: First, following a tradition and interpreting a tradition are considered as compelling design methods to express traditional culture. However, when combining a traditional and a modern design approach, it is important to either strongly emphasize traditional design elements or use small number of traditional design elements as focal points in modern design restaurants. Second, when designing a traditional restaurant using modern design elements with traditional focal points, it is more desirable to follow and/or to interpret a traditional elements, rather than experimenting an excessively unconventional design. Moreover, the design elements of exterior of a restaurant shows the identity of the restaurant. Therefore, using traditional elements in the exterior helps recognizing the traditional characteristics and culture. On the other hands, for the interior of the restaurant, it is better to use modern design method and materials for the practical reasons, such as construction cost reduction and ease of construction. We also discovered that it is more effective to use traditional elements to the pattern and color. The results of this study will set a foundation for further research of developing a design guideline for traditional restaurants.
Sang-Seol Lee(1870-1917) wrote a manuscript BaekSeungHoCho(百勝胡艸) in the late 19th century. BaekSeungHoCho was transcribed in classical Chinese from the 1879 Japanese book Physics(物理學) by Teizo Ihimori (1851-1916). Sang-Seol Lee, a famous independence activist, is also called Father of the Modern Mathematics Education of Korea, because of his early contribution to the modern mathematics education in the 19th century. In this paper, we introduce contents of his manuscript BaekSeungHoCho for the first time and discuss the significance of this book. Also, we show his contribution on the introduction to modern physics in the late 19th century Korea.
The Hanok church is an important cultural heritage that can be considered from a religious point of view of life in the modern age in Korea. We will investigate the bounadaries of the Hanok church built in modern age and the characteristics of Hanok architectural. To do so, we have conducted field trips, interviews, and repair reports of the Gimje Geumsan Church in the Jeollabuk province. The Geumsan Church is present, and the architectural characteristics can be confirmed in detail. In addition, Yugwang School, which was responsible for the education function, was able to guess the location and size through the data. As a result, the boundaries of Geumsan Church is the present fence, the west side has the building, and the east side has the playground. The Geumsan Church's flat form was divided into male and female according to the space configuration of ㄱ-shaped reflecting Confucian thought of the time. And it seems that the Yugwang school was located in the entrance part of the modern church with a two-frame scale, which is suitable for lecture.
