A Study on the Characteristics of Gerrit Rietveld's Furniture Design (Gerrit Rietveld 가구디자인의 조형특성연구)

  • Gerrit Rietveld who is Dutch architect and furniture designer had explored the plastic abstractness based on the universality of De Stijl principle. He had tried to expand the boundary of furniture design bound to traditional form and decorative aesthetics. Beginning of 20th century, he opened the new aesthetic realm of pure and abstract value for furniture design for the first time. Through this research, the results can be summarized as follows. The characteristics of his deign are abstractness, spatial consideration and tectonic construction. The abstractness is attained by simplifying constructional material into geometrical forms such as straight line, rectangle and square. And he adopted unconventional way of construction in order to increase this abstractness. The space included in his furniture can be expressed in the new technology of joint, the visual transparency using linear material, and the destruction of corners. All these aspects harmoniously helped the feeling of architectural space of flow. Through the exposed frame of furniture, Rietveld emphasized on the tectonic construction by methodological treatment such as piling-up or overlapping material. The characteristics of Gerrit Rietveld's design are abstract, spatial and tectonic. These aesthetical tendencies could be understood as a junction between De Stijl's principles and modern architecture's spatial preferences-flow and extension of space-.

Diachronic Analysis of Korean Men's Wear Design based on Changes in Gender Roles (20세기 한국 남성 성역할에 따른 남성복 디자인 변화 특성 연구)

  • This study aimed to analyze the changing characteristics between Men's Gender Role and Men's wear Design in 20th century. To analyze the representative Men' Gender roles, the related studies and literatures reviewed. Literature reviews and quantitative studies were performed to analyze the changing differences of Korean Men's wear Deign as a symbolic factors of gender role. The results of study are as follows. 1) The representative men's gender roles in 1900's~1920's were 'Patriarchal/ Stern Man'. The narrow V-zone of jacket and shoulder, high shirt collars and well fitted suits expressed the stern images of that times. 2) In 1930's~50's, 'Enervated/ Escapist Man' were the representative images. They were expressed with wide lapels and shoulders, emphasized V-zone and abundant trousers. Especially 40's style was under the influence of American 'Zoot Style'. 3) The representative gender roles were the men of 'Producer/Provider' in 60's~70's. Shortened jacket, wide lapels & neckties, slim trousers were used to express the strong & young images of Producer/ Provider during the industrialization era. 4) The representative gender roles were 'Attentive/ Intellectual/ Beautiful Men' in 80's~90's. The exaggerated round shoulders which were influenced by 'Big Look', and easy silhouette were related with the attentive images.

A Study on Interactive Design Characteristics shown in Corporate Participated Public Spaces (기업참여 공공 공간의 인터랙티브 디자인 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Due to characteristics of modern society including technological development, various methods engaging interaction between people and manmade environment have become one of the major issues raised in various fields of deign so called interactive design. Interactive design started as the interface between human and computer system, but now expanded to interior design field enhancing spatial experience of users. Now, many corporates are looking into interactive design to bridge the gap between company or brand identity and consumers as marketing tool. The current study investigates interactive concepts and characteristics of corporate participated public spaces and tries to define their design methods according to spatial marketing strategies. Using theoretical inquiry, cultural events and delivery of corporate identity information were defined as two major spatial strategies through cognitive or behavioral approaches. Moreover, digital, constructive, and expressive presentations were found to be most common design methods. Through this theoretical framework, 7 selected samples in Korea are analyzed in order to find detailed design characteristics. It is hoped that this study may serve in understanding current design approaches of interactive corporate public spaces and useful guideline when designing interactive public spaces not only as means of marketing strategies but even for public goods.

  • The visual expression of deconstructive graphic design influenced by postmodernism differs from the traditional ways of graphic expression that consist of precise images and text and is challenging and highly experimental. The characteristics of the formative nature of such deconstructive graphic design emphasized the importance of the reader as the principal agent of aesthetic experience in the appreciation of works. For this study, a new ideological framework was developed regarding the ambiguity arising due to visual experimentation in deconstructive graphic design, assuming the central theory to be the Reception Theory (Aesthetics of Reception) centering around the recipient who is the reader. The characteristics of Iser's Reception Theory are substituted as a theoretical category and an interpretation of the works of ambiguity in deconstructive graphic design is carried out. Although Aesthetics of Reception is a literary theory about the interaction between the artist and the reader, as a method for interpreting deconstructive graphic design influenced by postmodernism, it laid a theoretical foundation and enriched the interpretation of works. Moreover, the four characteristics of Iser's Reception Theory were used to create a framework that suggested a new direction for the approach based on the reader's interaction in the process of interpreting works of modern graphic design.
