  • Urban pollution has been a problem in China since ancient times. In modern times, pollution was aggravated by industrialization and urbanization and became closely related to people's lives. Shanghai was the industrial center and the most urbanized place of modern China. As a price, it needed to face extremely serious urban pollution, and the treatment of this problem involved all aspects of social life. Noise pollution let foreigners to interpret the Chinese people and the city of Shanghai from a cultural perspective, and let Chinese residents to understand Shanghai and the nation from a civilized perspective. Pollution regulation made Shanghai the first city in modern China to implement overall pollution control and levy environmental protection fees. It also enabled the Chinese to gradually fight for their rights in urban governance. Urban pollution also brought business opportunities; in the highly commercial city of Shanghai, it promoted the development of some industries. The experience of urban pollution and its treatment prompted the people of Shanghai to rethink and re-recognize modern civilization, and also promoted the formation of Shanghai urban community.

  • The difference between presentation of cities in the European modern drama and its counterpart the American modern drama denotes and comes from two very different images of cities. While the European modern drama presented cities that were desolate and fantastic to certain measure, the American modern drama presented the images of actual cities that can be identified by the spectators and readers. Although one cannot 'actually' identify any actual representation of cities in both the European and the American dramas, the images of cities can be discerned in the dialogues of the characters in the plays themselves. In this perspective the images of cities that are represented in any work of modern drama are actually represented through metaphors and connotations. The images in this instance rests and can only be identified within the boundaries of psychology. The dialogues are means through which the author communicates with the spectators. Because drama is above all categorized as being a work of text before representation, deciphering drama also falls in to same cadre as any other literary texts. Through the means of 'decontextualisation' the reader/spectator identifies with the associated images that the text proposes.

  • The purpose of the present study is to figure out what the issues faced by architecture were at the time immediately before the transition to modern era centering of the works of Otto Wagner who acted in Vienna, Austria at the Fin de $si{\grave{e}}cle$. Therefore, the following points were examined in the present study; first, how were new spaces necessary to accommodate modern lives organized and how were the plans changed; second, how did the external expressions of architecture pursued by Otto Wagner appeared between arts and technologies, between historicism and modernity, and between decorations and functions. Through the study, it could be seen that Wagner began from historicism and traditionalism and tried to compromise them with modernity. Many modern characteristics appeared a priori in Wagner's works from the construction of 'Linke Wien Zeile housing block' in 1898, his works completely broke from the typical historicism styles to open the period of inventive 'Secession styles.' At that time, Wagner concentrated on so called 'flat decorations.' Thereafter, his residential architecture completed to modern styles with 'Neustiftgasse housing block' as the peak. The characteristics of modern housing as above became a cornerstone of the modern functionalism later.

Therefore, it has the purpose of utilizing the healing devices staying in the gap between Gosijo and Modern poem for literary therapy. Gosijo's extreme solitude and calm are invaded into modern poem, producing a sleepless night of solitude. The sentences with the emotions of Gosijo are different in modern poem, but the Gosijo and modern poem share the same emotions. These literary devices provide a sentiment of healing to modern people. This study will contribute to the activation of literary therapy in the future.

  • Just as culture is a collection of lifestyles, Cultural Properties is what is made over a long period of time and is left around us, whether it takes form or not. Many countries around the world have their own standards and are trying hard to preserve those with precious values. And in the case of Modern Architecture, because they are still in use In our daily lives and for the lack of recognition, they are continuously threatened during urban changes and developments. The purpose of the research is not to preserve Modern Architecture as done In the museum, but to seek a way for it to coexist with the changing environments of contemporary cities. Therefore, it is to recognize Modern Architecture as valuable assets, which expresses historicity in urban settings, and to seek the design characteristics of Modern Architecture. This is a process in order to find a new method for conservation of historicity. The result are as followings. Modern Architecture have their design characteristics and these can be applied as a design guideline. Therefore the form, material, and the colors of individual Modern Architecture can be analyzed so as to create a design guideline according to their styles. According to the analysis of Registered Cultural Properties in Seoul, they can be categorized into 6 uses and found the design characteristics of individual uses.

  • A position-sensitive CsI(Tl) crystal array coupled with the multi-anode position sensitive photomultiplier tube (PS-PMT), Hamamatsu H8500C, has been developed at the Institute of Modern Physics. An effective, fast, and economical readout circuit based on discretized positioning circuit (DPC) bridge was designed for the 64-channel multi-anode flat panel PSPMT. The horizontal and vertical position resolutions are 0.58 mm and 0.63 mm respectively for the 1.0 × 1.0 × 5.0 ㎣ CsI(Tl) array, and the horizontal and vertical position resolutions are 0.86 mm and 0.80 mm respectively for the 2.0 × 2.0 × 10.0 ㎣ CsI(Tl) array. These results show that the CsI(Tl) crystal array with low cost could be applied in the fields of medical imaging and high-resolution gamma camera.

  • The materialism prevalent in the modern industrial society and concern for the destruction of nature have led people to long for the returning to nature and excite their nostalgia for old. These phenomena induced in modern fashion naturalism retrospectivism ethnicism and primitivism. In the following we present our findings in regard the roles and relationships of the tie dying with the modern fashion design. in regard the roles and relationships of the tie dying with the modern fashion design. The common basic themes are founded as follows; 1. Naturalism: The tie dying is from very old times and has evolved in many parts of the world producing their own natural designs and color. They bear the characteristic of nature; the pleasantness smoothness and complexity. 2. Individualism and hand made: No two items produced by the tie dying technique are identical even though they are similar by design and their individuality is to some extent determined by chance. The retrospetivism and individualism are themes relating to the modern fashion. 3. Ethnicism and primitivism: The tie dying brings up the 'ethnic and traditional' to us and their designs and colors present the new images of the ethnic and primitive influences to the modern designs. 4. Ecology recyle and grunge look: The tie dying represent the recycle of the used natural resources such as making the old cloths useful again in new forms by tie dying them. The old clothes thus restored show wrinkled untidy and somewhat loosely fit form. This image of 'grunge look' is one of the central theme of the modern fashion.
