Numerical Modeling for Turbulent Partially Premixed Flames (난류 부분 예혼합 화염장에 대한 수치 모델링)

  • The present study is focused on the subgrid scale combustion model in context with a Large Eddy Simulation. In order to deal with detailed chemical kinetic, the level-set method based on a flamelet model is addressed. In this model, the flame front is treated as an interface, represented by an iso-surface of a scalar field G. This iso-surface is convected by the velocity field and its filtered quantities are include the turbulent burning velocity, which is to be modelled. For modelling the turbulent burning velocity, an equation for the length-scale of the sub-filter flame front fluctuations was developed. The formulations and issues for the turbulent premixed and partially premixed flames are addressed in detail.

GOTHIC-3D APPLICABILITY TO HYDROGEN COMBUSTION ANALYSIS

  • Severe accidents in nuclear power plants can cause hydrogen-generating chemical reactions, which create the danger of hydrogen combustion and thus threaten containment integrity. For containment analyses, a three-dimensional mechanistic code, GOTHIC-3D has been applied near source compartments to predict whether or not highly reactive gas mixtures can form during an accident with the hydrogen mitigation system working. To assess the code applicability to hydrogen combustion analysis, this paper presents the numerical calculation results of GOTHIC-3D for various hydrogen combustion experiments, including FLAME, LSVCTF, and SNU-2D. In this study, a technical base for the modeling oflarge- and small-scale facilities was introduced through sensitivity studies on cell size and bum modeling parameters. Use of a turbulent bum option of the eddy dissipation concept enabled scale-free applications. Lowering the bum parameter values for the flame thickness and the bum temperature limit resulted in a larger flame velocity. When applied to hydrogen combustion analysis, this study revealed that the GOTHIC-3D code is generally able to predict the combustion phenomena with its default bum modeling parameters for large-scale facilities. However, the code needs further modifications of its bum modeling parameters to be applied to either small-scale facilities or extremely fast transients.

  • Liquid rocket injectors play crucial roles on propulsive performance, combustion stability, and heat transfer characteristics. Nevertheless, their developments have mainly relied on empirical methods and expensive hot-firing tests due to lack of fundamental understanding of high pressure combustion phenomena in the near-injector regions. The present study was motivated by recent efforts to develop reliable modeling of liquid rocket combustion. The turbulent combustion model based on the flamelet concept has been extended to take into account real-fluid behaviors occurred at supercritical pressures, and validated against measurements for a cryogenic nitrogen injection, a non-premixed turbulent jet flame at atmospheric pressure, and a LOx/$GH_2$ coaxial shear injector at a supercritical pressure.

  • 내연기관 연소는 난류유동, 분무, 연소, 열전달의 복합적인 현상으로서 열역학적 해석이 주류를 이루어 왔으나 컴퓨터의 발전에 따라 효율 개선과 공해 저감을 목표로 전산유체해석 기법이 적극적으로 도입되고 있다. 내연 기관 연소의 근간을 형성하는 난류 연소 모델링의 기본 개념으로서 가솔린엔진에서의 예혼합연소와 디젤엔진에서의 확산연소에 대한 영역조건평균(zone conditional averaging) 모델과 조건평균닫힘(conditional moment closure) 모델에 대해 설명하였으며 $NO_x$와 soot 예측에 대한 적용과 엔진응용 사례를 소개하였다.

Numerical Modeling for Combustion and Soot Formation Processes in Turbulent Diffusion Flames

  • In order to investigate the soot formation and oxidation processes, we employed the two variable approach and its source terms representing soot nucleation, coagulation, surface growth and oxidation. For the simulation of the taxi-symmetric turbulent reacting flows, the pressure-velocity coupling is handled by the pressure based finite volume method. We also employed laminar flamelet model to calculate the thermo-chemical properties and the proper soot source terms from the information of detailed chemical kinetic model. The numerical and physical models used in this study successfully predict the essential features of the combustion processes and soot formation characteristics in the reacting flow field.

  • The fully coupled conditional moment closure(CMC) model has been developed to realistically simulate the structure of complex turbulent nonpremixed syngas flame, in which the flame structure could be considerablyl influenced by the turbulence, transport history, and heat transfer as well. In order to correctly account for the transport effect, the CMC transport equations fully coupled with the flow and mixing fields are numerically solved. The present CMC approach has successfully demonstrated the capability to realistically predict the detailed structure and the overall combustion characteristics. The numerical results obtained in this study clearly reveal the importance of the convective and radiative heat transfer in the precise structure and NOx emission of the present confined combustor with a cooling wall.

  • The representative interactive flamelet(RIF) concept has been applied to numerically simulate the combustion processes and pollutant formation in the HSDI diesel engine. In order to account for the spatial inhomogeneity of the scalar dissipation rate, the eulerian particle flamelet model using the multiple flamelets has been employed. The vaporization effects on turbulence-chemistry interaction are included in the present RIF procedure. the results of numerical modeling using the rif concept are compared with experimental data and with numerical results of the widely-used ad-hoc combustion model. Numerical results indicate that the rif approach including the vaporization effect on turbulent spray combustion process successfully predicts the ignition delay characteristics as well as the pollutant formation in the HSDI diesel engines.

  • The LES-based level-set flamelet model has been applied to analyze the turbulent propane/air premixed bluff-body flame with a highly wrinkled flame fronts. The present study has been motivated to investigate the interaction between the flame front and turbulent eddies. Special emphasis is given to study the effect of G equation filtering treatment on the precise structure of turbulent premixed flames as well as the effect of sub-grid scale (SGS) eddies on the wrinkling of the flame surface. The level-set/flamelet model has been adopted to account for the effect of turbulence-flame interaction as well as to properly capture the flame front. Numerical results indicate that the present LES-based level-set flamelet approach has a capability to realistically simulate the highly non-stationary turbulent premixed flame.

  • Large eddy simulation of turbulent premixed flame stabilized by the bluff body is performed by using sub-grid scale combustion model based on the G-equation describing the flame front propagation. The basic idea of LES modeling is to evaluate the filtered-front speed, which should be enhanced in the grid scale by the scale fluctuations. The dynamic subgrid scale models newly introduced into the G-equation are validated by the premixed combustion flow behind the triangle flame holder. The calculated results can predict the velocity and temperature of the combustion flow in good agreement with the experiment data.

  • The objective of this work is to investigate the turbulent reacting flow in a three dimensional combustor with emphasis on thermal NO emission through a numerical simulation. Flow field is analyzed using the SIMPLE method which is known as stable as well as accurate in the combustion modeling, and the finite volume method is adopted in solving the radiative transfer equation. In this work, the thermal characteristics and NO emission in a three dimensional combustor by changing parameters such as equivalence ratio and inlet swirl angle have investigated. As the equivalence ratio increases, which means that more fuel is supplied due to a larger inlet fuel velocity, the flame temperature increases and the location of maximum temperature and thermal NO has moved towards downstream. In the mean while, the existence of inlet swirl velocity makes the fuel and combustion air more completely mixed and burnt in short distance. Therefore, the locations of the maximum reaction rate, temperature and thermal NO were shifted to forward direction compared with the case of no swirl.
