This paper proposes the modeling scheme of the Miniature Universal Testing Machine (MUTM) composed of 36 thin-beam-type bimorph PZTs and the control algorithm to minimize the residual vibration of the MUTM in the dynamic testing of specimens. In the operation of the MUTM, hysteresis, residual displacement and vibration of it are major issues. From the analysis of the MUTM behaviors, the hysteresis is described by the curving fitting scheme with the function of an input voltage. The dynamic characteristics of the MUTM are identified by the frequency domain modeling technique base on the experimental data. The interest bandwidth is focused on 125-315HZ for effective modeling and control. For the robust vibration control of the MUTM, the sliding mode control and the Kalman filter as observer are proposed. The paper also proposes the best input signal type to operate the MUTM effectively. The feasibility of the proposed modeling scheme and control algorithm are tested and verified experimentally.
An effective modeling and simulation scheme of a resistive type Superconducting fault Current Limiter (SFCL) using PSCAD/EMTDC is proposed in this paper. In case of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) resistive type fault current limiter current limiting is implemented by the ultra-fast transition characteristics from the superconducting (non-resistive) state to the normal (resistive) state by overstepping the critical current density. The states can generally be divided into three sub-states: the superconducting state the quench state and the recovery state respectively. In order to provide alternative application schemes of a resistive type SFCL, an effective modeling and simulation method of the SFCL is necessary. For that purpose, in this study, an actual experiment based component model is developed and applied for the simulation of the real resistive type SFCL using PSCAD/EMTDC. The proposed simulation scheme can be implemented to the grid system readily under various system conditions including sort of faults and the system capacity as well. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model and simulation scheme.
Applying a direct formulation for the enrichment of the displacement field an extended finite element (XFEM) scheme for modeling of cohesive crack growth is developed. Only elements cut by the crack is enriched and the scheme fits within the framework of standard FEM code. The scheme is implemented for the 3-node constant strain triangle (CST) and the 6-node linear strain triangle (LST). Modeling of standard concrete test cases such as fracture in the notched three point beam bending test (TPBT) and in the four point shear beam test (FPSB) illustrates the performance. The XFEM results show good agreement with results obtained by applying standard interface elements in FEM and with experimental results. In conjunction with criteria for crack growth local versus nonlocal computation of the crack growth direction is discussed.

A study of the conceptual data modeling to realize the decommissioning database on the HRR-1&2 was carried out. In this study, the current state of the abroad decommissioning database was investigated to make a reference of the database. A scope of the construction of decommissioning database has been set up based on user requirements. Then, a theory of the database construction was established and a scheme on the decommissioning information was classified . The facility information, work information, radioactive waste information, and radiological information dealing with the decommissioning database were extracted through interviews with an expert group and also decided upon the system configuration of the decommissioning database. A code which is composed of 17 bit was produced considering the construction, scheme and information. The results of the conceptual data modeling and the classification scheme will be used as basic data to create a prototype design of the decommissioning database.
This paper investigates the characteristics of turbulence schemes. Turbulence closures are fundamental for modeling the atmospheric diffusion, transport and dispersion in the boundary layer. In particular, in non-homogeneous conditions, a proper description of turbulent transport in planetary boundary layer is fundamental aspect. This study is based on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) and combines four different turbulence schemes to assess if the different schemes have a impact on simulation results of vertical profiles. Two of these schemes are Isotropc Deformation scheme (I.Def) and Anisotropic deformation scheme (A.Def) that are simple local scheme based on Smagorinsky scheme. The other two are Mellor-Yamada scheme (MY2.5) and Deardorff TKE scheme (D.TKE) that are more complex non-local schemes that include a prognostic equation for turbulence kinetic energy. The simulated potential temperature, wind speed and mixing ratio are compared against radiosonde observations from the study region. MY2.5 shows consistently reasonable vertical profile and closet to observation. D.TKE shows good results under relatively strong synoptic condition especially, mixing ratio simulation. Validation results show that all schemes consistently underestimated wind speed and mixing ratio but, potential temperature was somewhat overestimated.
For the pervasive computing in ubiquitous environment, it is very important to manage the context model to provide pertinent context knowledge to context-aware applications. The context model should be able to support efficiently the context knowledge reusing and sharing as well as reasoning. Previous works focus mainly on the context knowledge representation scheme for reasoning. This paper proposes a context knowledge modeling scheme especially for reusing and sharing. This scheme provides well-established principles and guides for 1) context knowledge modularization and hierarchization, and for 2) context knowledge identification and organization. Once the context models are built according to the scheme, the structure of the context model and the meanings of the context knowledge elements become clear and consistent, so that context-aware applications can share and reuse the context knowledge in easy and error-reduced manner. This paper also discusses the implementation of a context model and an application for Presentation Helper scenario running on a software middleware system (CAMUS) for ubiquitous service robots which is being developed by ETRI Korea.
This paper presents a novel fault location scheme on Korean AC electric railway systems. On AC railway system, because there is a long distance, 40 km or longer, between two railway substations, a fault location technique is very important. Since the fault current flows through the catenary system, the catenary system must be modeled exactly to analyze fault current magnitude and fault location. In this paper, before suggestion for the novel scheme of fault location, a 9-conductor modeling technique that includes boost wires and impedance bonds is introduced, based on the characteristics of Korean AC electric railway. After obtaining a 9-conductor modeling, the railway system is constructed for computer simulation by using PSCAD/EMTDC. By case studies, we can verify superiority of a new fault location scheme and suggest a powerful model for fault analysis on electric railway systems.
Recently, shape analysis of human organs has achieved much attention, owing to its potential to localize structural abnormalities. For a group-wise shape analysis, it is important to accurately restore the shape of a target structure in each subject and to build the inter-subject shape correspondences. To accomplish this, we propose a shape modeling method based on the Laplacian deformation framework. We deform a template model of a target structure in the segmented images while restoring subject-specific shape features by using Laplacian surface representation. In order to build the inter-subject shape correspondences, we implemented the progressive weighting scheme for adaptively controlling the rigidity parameter of the deformable model. This weighting scheme helps to preserve the relative distance between each point in the template model as much as possible during model deformation. This area-preserving deformation allows each point of the template model to be located at an anatomically consistent position in the target structure. Another advantage of our method is its application to human organs of non-spherical topology. We present the experiments for evaluating the robustness of shape modeling against large variations in shape and size with the synthetic sets of the second cervical vertebrae (C2), which has a complex shape with holes.

Recently, designing 3D objects using various modeling techniques become getting more important issues in related industrial fields. The subdivision scheme is a technique that generates a smooth sur-face through many times of refinement processes that split polygons of control mesh into several smaller polygons. In this paper, we propose a new subdivision algorithm that preserves sharp-edges of control mesh after several refinement processes in the Doo-Sabin subdivision scheme. Using the pro-posed algorithm, the Doo-Sabin subdivision scheme can be well applied to modeling 3D objects with sharp-edges.

This paper proposes a CSG-based representation scheme for heterogeneous objects including multi-material objects and Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs). In particular, this scheme focuses on the construction of complicated heterogeneous objects guaranteeing desired material continuities at all the interfaces. In order to create various types of heterogeneous primitives, we first describe methods for specifying material composition functions such as geometry-independent, geometry-dependent functions. Constructive Material Composition (CMC) and corresponding heterogeneous Boolean Operators (e.g. material union, difference, intersection. and partition) are then proposed to illustrate how material continuities are dealt with. Finally, we describe the model hierarchy and data structure for computer representation. Even though the proposed scheme alone is sufficient for modeling all sorts of heterogeneous objects, the proposed scheme adopts a hybrid representation between CSG and decomposition. That is because hybrid representation can avoid the unnecessary growth of binary trees.
