  • Mines, torpedoes and improvised explosive devices (IED) pose a serious threat to the survivability of naval combatants. Inasmuch, a major goal in the design of modern combatant ships has been to eliminate or at least reduce the devastating damage caused by underwater explosion events. Even though there has been extensive research performed on the various underwater explosion phenomena and their associated effects, effective shock testing and shock proofing strategies for naval ship systems have proven to be illusive. Through the use of modeling and simulation (M&S), live fire test and evaluation (LFT&E) and laboratory testing, general guidelines for the shock hardening of shipboard equipment and systems have been developed. In this paper, current aspect of ship survivability has been addressed and future direction is discussed.

  • M&S techniques are utilized for various purposes on the national defense, and its importance is increasing than ever. For analyzing RAM (Reliability, Availability and Maintainability) of weapon system, using M&S techniques can be more effective and practical way than deterministic approach, because M&S approach can consider uncertain variables and various constraints in the ILS (Integrated Logistics support) field. For design of ILS M&S, we first set up a purpose of M&S, attributes of real system and other similar ILS M&S tool. Then, we convert real system into model which consists of mathematical formula and logical expression. In this thesis, we introduce modeling procedures of M&S that describes total life cycle of 'OO guided weapon system' and the contents proposed in this paper can provide references for developing other M&S tool.

  • To simulate the effect of high dose-rate radiation on semiconductor devices, device modeling work has been performed especially in the area of photo-current generation by a PIN diode. The resultant analytical values were compared with experimental ones that were specially designed and performed to benchmark the simulation results. Initial results showed 27.85% error between the simulation and the experiment. The error can be further reduced by improvement both in simulation and in related experiments. The developed technique from the study can be applicable to radiation dosimetry and to analysis on the radiation effects in electronics.

  • Climate change has been intensifying drought frequency and severity. Such prolonged droughts reduce reservoir levels, thereby exacerbating drought impacts. While previous studies have focused on optimizing reservoir operations using historical data to mitigate these impacts, their scope is limited to analyzing past events, highlighting the need for predictive methods for future droughts. This research introduces a novel approach for predicting minimum inflow at the Seomjingang dam which has experienced significant droughts. This study utilized the Stochastic Analysis Modeling and Simulation (SAMS) 2007 to generate inflow sequences for the same period of observed inflow. Then we simulate reservoir operations to assess firm yield and predict minimum inflow through synthetic inflow analysis. Minimum inflow is defined as the inflow where firm yield is less than 95% of the synthetic inflow in many sequences during periods matching observed inflow. The results for each case indicated the firm yield for the minimum inflow is on average 9.44 m3/s, approximately 1.07 m3/s lower than the observed inflow's firm yield of 10.51 m3/s. The minimum inflow estimation can inform reservoir operation standards, facilitate multi-reservoir system reviews, and assess supplementary capabilities. Estimating minimum inflow emerges as an effective strategy for enhancing water supply reliability and mitigating shortages.

  • It is necessary for us to undergo trial and error for eliciting the rational requirement of the acquisition of weapon systems, but the M&S is general approach due to costs and risk of the development. In addition to the acquisition of weapon systems, M&S is extensively employed in the analysis and the training of developed weapon systems. The ADD (Agency for Defense Development) has developed DEVS integrated development environment (QUEST) that provides M&S general ground technique composed of simulation model implementation services, simulation result analysis services, and simulation interface services. This paper describes the interface architecture and the implementation of torpedo target detection section interface simulation system using QUEST. The torpedo target detection section interface simulation system is composed of torpedo target detection section which calculates a result of target detection and the QUEST scenario generator which provides simulation scenario for performance test of the torpedo target detection section. The interface architecture of torpedo target detection section interface simulation system is designed to verify the interface and performance of the torpedo target detection section by linking with the QUEST scenario generator.

  • In the simulation of underwater vehicles such as a submarine or a torpedo, various type of simulations like an engineering level simulation for predicting the performance precisely and an engagement level simulation for examining the effectiveness of a certain tactic is required. For this reason, a tactics manager which can change the behavior of a simulation model according to external tactics is needed. In this study the tactics manager supporting a script language and engine which can represent various tactics and can help users define external input tactics for the tactic manager easily is suggested. Python and Lua which are representative among script languages have been compared and analyzed from the viewpoint of a tactic manage, and the tactic manger using the script engines of those script languages was implemented. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the tactic manager, a target motion analysis simulation of the warfare between a submarine and a surface ship.

  • Combat modeling and simulation (M&S) of large-scale computer generated forces (CGFs) enables the development of even the most sophisticated strategy of combat warfare and the efficient facilitation of a comprehensive simulation of the upcoming battle. The DEVS-POMDP framework is proposed where the DEVS framework describing the explicit behavior rules in military doctrines, and POMDP model describing the autonomous behavior of the CGFs are hierarchically combined to capture the complexity of realistic world combat modeling and simulation. However, it has previously been well documented that computing the optimal policy of a POMDP model is computationally demanding. In this paper, we show that not only can the performance of CGFs be improved by an efficient POMDP tree search algorithm but CGFs are also able to conveniently learn the behavior model of the enemy through case studies in the scenario of counterfire warfare and the scenario of a mechanized infantry brigade's offensive operations.

AddSIM is developed as a key enabler for Defense Modeling & Simulation(M&S) systems which simulate battlefields and used for battle experiments, analyses, military exercises, training, etc. AddSIM shall provide a standard simulation framework of the next Defense M&S systems. Therefore AddSIM shall satisfy not only functional but also quality requirements such as availability, modifiability, performance, testability, usability, and others. AddSIM consists of operating softwares of hierarchical components including graphical user interface, simulation engines, and support services(natural environment model, math utility, etc.), and separated weapon system models executable on the operating softwares. The relation between software architectures and their quality attributes are summarized from previous works. And the AddSIM architecture and its achievements in the aspect of quality attributes are reviewed.

  • A power distribution network (PDN) is a network that provides connection between the voltage source supply and the power/ground terminals of a microprocessor chip. It consists of a voltage regulator module, a printed circuit board, a package substrate, a microprocessor chip as well as decoupling capacitors. For power integrity analysis, the board and package layouts have to be transformed into an electrical network of resistor, inductor and capacitor components which may be expressed using the S-parameters models. This modeling process generally takes from several hours up to a few days for a complete board or package layout. When the board and package layouts change, they need to be re-extracted and the S-parameters models also need to be re-generated for power integrity assessment. This not only consumes a lot of resources such as time and manpower, the task of PDN modeling is also tedious and mundane. In this paper, a block-based PDN modeling is proposed. Here, the board or package layout is partitioned into sub-blocks and each of them is modeled independently. In the event of a change in power rails routing, only the affected sub-blocks will be reextracted and re-modeled. Simulation results show that the proposed block-based PDN modeling not only can save at least 75% of processing time but it can, at the same time, keep the modeling accuracy on par with the traditional PDN modeling methodology.
