The Gaussian process model (GPM) is a flexible surrogate model that can be used for nonparametric regression for multivariate problems. A unique feature of the GPM is that a prediction variance is automatically provided with the regression function. In this paper, we estimate the safety margin of a nuclear power plant by performing regression on the output of best-estimate simulations of a large-break loss-of-coolant accident with sampling of safety system configuration, sequence timing, technical specifications, and thermal hydraulic parameter uncertainties. The key aspect of our approach is that the GPM regression is only performed on the dominant input variables, the safety injection flow rate and the delay time for AC powered pumps to start representing sequence timing uncertainty, providing a predictive model for the peak clad temperature during a reflood phase. Other uncertainties are interpreted as contributors to the measurement noise of the code output and are implicitly treated in the GPM in the noise variance term, providing local uncertainty bounds for the peak clad temperature. We discuss the applicability of the foregoing method to reduce the use of conservative assumptions in best estimate plus uncertainty (BEPU) and Level 1 probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) success criteria definitions while dealing with a large number of uncertainties.

It is demanded to find the dynamic model of a real structure to design a controller. However, as the structure has inherently infinite number of degree-of-freedom, it is impossible to obtain an exact dynamic model of the structure. Instead a reduction model with finite degree-of-freedom is used for the design of a controller. So there exists uncertainty between a real model and a reduction model which causes poor performance of control. All these uncertainties can degrade the control performance and even cause the control instability. Thus, robust control strategy considering the above uncertainties can be an alternative one to guarantee the performance and stability of the control. This study deals with the experimental verification of robust controller design for the active mass driver. $\mu$-synthesis technique is employed as a robust control strategy. Some weights are chosen based on the difference between the initial plant with which the controller is designed and the perturbed plant to be controlled having the actuator uncertainty. The robustness of $\mu$-synthesis technique is compared with the result of LQG strategy, which does not consider the uncertainty.

This paper addresses sliding mode control (SMC) of the anti-lock braking system (ABS) with a compensator of model uncertainties such as vehicle parameter variation, unmodeled dynamics, and external disturbances. A sliding mode controller (SMC) is designed with a nominal vehicle model to achieve a desired wheel slip ratio. A disturbance observer (DOB) is introduced to compensate the model uncertainties and is designed with a transfer function of a hydraulic brake dynamics. Through simulations on the model uncertainties, it is verified that the sliding mode control with the DOB can give the simulation results better than the sliding mode control without the DOB.

In this paper a model following flight control system design using the discrete time quasi-sliding mode control method is described. The quasi-sliding mode is represented as the sliding mode band, not as the sliding surface. The quasi-sliding mode control is composed of the equivalent control for the nominal system without uncertainties and disturbances and the additive control compensating the uncertainties and disturbances. The linearized plant on the equilibrium point is used in designing a flight control system and the stability conditions are proposed for the model uncertainties. Pseudo-state feedback control which uses the model variables for the unmeasured states is proposed. The proposed method is applied to the design of the roll attitude and pitch load factor control of a bank-to-turn missile. The performance is verified through the nonlinear six degrees of freedom flight simulation.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive neural dynamic surface control (DSC) approach with $H_{\infty}$ tracking performance for full dynamics of nonlinear flight systems. It is assumed that the model uncertainties such as structured and unstrutured uncertainties, and external disturbances influence the nonlinear aircraft model. In our control system, self recurrent wavelet neural networks (SRWNNs) are used to compensate the model uncertainties of nonlinear flight systems, and an adaptive DSC technique is extended for the disturbance attenuation of nonlinear flight systems. All weights of SRWNNs are trained on-line by the smooth projection algorithm. From Lyapunov stability theorem, it is shown that $H_{\infty}$ performance nom external disturbances can be obtained. Finally, we present the simulation results for a nonlinear six-degree-of-freedom F-16 aircraft model to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed control system.

In this paper, a multiple sliding surface (MSS) controller for a twin rotor multi-input-multioutput system (TRMS) with mismatched model uncertainties is proposed. The nonlinear terms in the model are regarded as model uncertainties, which do not satisfy the standard matching condition, and an MSS control technique is adopted to overcome them. In order to control the position of the TRMS, the system dynamics are pseudo-decomposed into horizontal and vertical subsystems, and two MSSs are separately designed for each subsystem. The stability of the TRMS with the proposed controller is guaranteed by the Lyapunov stability theory. Some simulation results are given to verify the proposed scheme, and the real time performances of the TRMS with the MSS controller show the effectiveness of the proposed controller.
Parametric uncertainties and inverter nonlinearity exist in the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive system of electrical vehicles, which may lead to performance degradation or failure, and eventually threaten reliable operation. Therefore, a model-free deadbeat predictive current controller (MFDPCC) for PMSM drive systems is proposed in this study. The data-driven ultra-local model of a surface-mounted PMSM (SMPMSM) drive system that consists of parametric uncertainties and inverter nonlinearity is first established through the input and output data of a SMPMSM drive system. Subsequently, MFDPCC is designed. The performance comparisons and analyses of the proposed MFDPCC, the conventional proportional-integral controller, and the model-based deadbeat predictive current controller for SMPMSM drive systems are implemented via system simulation and experimental tests. Results show the effectiveness and technical advantages of the proposed MFDPCC.

Structural uncertainties are generally modeled using probabilistic approaches in order to quantify uncertainties in behaviors of structures. This uncertainty results from the uncertainties of structural parameters. Monte Carlo methods have been usually carried out for analyses of uncertainty problems where no analytical expression is available for the forward relationship between data and model parameters. In such cases any direct mathematical treatment is impossible, however the forward relation materializes itself as an algorithm allowing data to be calculated for any given model. This study addresses a new method which is utilized as a basis for the uncertainty estimates of structural responses. It applies double uniform random numbers (i.e. DURN technique) to conventional Monte Carlo algorithm. In DURN method, the scenarios of uncertainties are sequentially selected and executed in its simulation. Numerical examples demonstrate the beneficial effect that the technique can increase uncertainty degree of structural properties with maintaining structural stability and safety up to the limit point of a breakdown of structural systems.

This paper presents a design method of sliding model control (SMC) for single input linear systems with mismatched uncertainties. We define a virtual state based on the controllable canonical form of the nominal system. And we defined a sliding surface for the augmented system with a virtual state. This sliding surface makes it possible to use the SMC technique with various types of controllers. In this paper, we construct a controller that combines SMC with robust controller. We design a robust controller for the system with mismatched uncertainties using a form of linear matrix inequality(LMI). We make a virtual state from this robust control input and the states of the nominal system. And we design a sliding model controller that stabilizes the overall closed-loop system.
