  • In Part 2 of this paper, the dynamic cutting force model, thermal behavior model, and feed drive model used in the development of a virtual machine tool (VMT) are briefly described. Some results are presented to verify the proposed models. Experimental data agreed well with the predicted results fer each model. A comprehensive software environment to integrate the models into a VMT is also proposed.

  • This paper proposes a new model to compensate for errors of a five-axis machine tool. A matrix with error components, that is, an error matrix, is separated from the error synthesis model of a five-axis machine tool. Based on the kinematics and inversion of the error matrix which can be obtained not by using a numerical method, an error compensation model is established and used to calculate compensation values of joint variables. The proposed compensation model does not need numerical methods to find the compensation values from the error compensation model, which includes nonlinear equations. An experiment using a double ball-bar is implemented to verify the proposed model.

Development of a Time-Domain Simulation Tool for Offshore Wind Farms

  • A time-domain simulation tool to predict the dynamic power output of wind turbines in an offshore wind farm was developed in this study. A wind turbine model consisting of first or second order transfer functions of various wind turbine elements was combined with the Ainslie's eddy viscosity wake model to construct the simulation tool. The wind turbine model also includes an aerodynamic model that is a look up table of power and thrust coefficients with respect to the tip speed ratio and pitch angle of the wind turbine obtained by a commercial multi-body dynamics simulation tool. The wake model includes algorithms of superposition of multiple wakes and propagation based on Taylor's frozen turbulence assumption. Torque and pitch control algorithms were implemented in the simulation tool to perform max-Cp and power regulation control of the wind turbines. The simulation tool calculates wind speeds in the two-dimensional domain of the wind farm at the hub height of the wind turbines and yields power outputs from individual wind turbines. The NREL 5MW reference wind turbine was targeted as a wind turbine to obtain parameters for the simulation. To validate the simulation tool, a Danish offshore wind farm with 80 wind turbines was modelled and used to predict the power from the wind farm. A comparison of the prediction with the measured values available in literature showed that the results from the simulation program were fairly close to the measured results in literature except when the wind turbines are congruent with the wind direction.

  • As consumer's desire becomes various, agility of mold manufacturing is most important factor for competence of manufacturer. In common works to use commercial CAM system to generate tool path, some decision making process is required to produce optimal result of CAM systems. We propose tool selection procedures to aid the decision making process. The system provides available tool size for machining of design model part of injection mold die by analyzing sliced CAD model of die cavity and core. Also, the tool size information is used to calculate machining time. The system is developed with commercial CAM using API. This module will be used for optimization of tool selection and planning process.

Tool Wear Monitoring Scheme by Modeling of the Cutting Dynamics by Time-series Method (Time-series 방법으로 모델링한 절삭역학에 의한 공구마모감시방법)

  • In this work, the imaginary part of the inner modulation transfer function of the cutting dynamics is introduced for tool wear monitoring. Time-series method is utilized to construct the general three dimensional cutting dynamics whose imaginary part of the inner modulation transfer funcition shows the proportionality to tool wear at the natural frequency of the machine tool dynamics. Thus model is reduced to single-input single-output model without altering the proportionality characteristics to tool wear and implemented to the dual computer system in which one computer performs measurement while the other calculates the imaginary part of the inner modulation transfer function of the cutting dynamics by the batch least square method. The values of the imaginary part at the natural requency of the machine tool structure in the cutting direction are compared to the one calculated during machining with a brand new tool to decide the current status of the tool. The experiments shows the relevance of the proposed concept.

  • This paper presents a new paradigm for 3-axis tool path generation based on an incomplete 2-manifold mesh model, namely, an inexact polyhedron. When geometric data is transferred from one system to another system and tessellated for tool path generation, the model does not have any topological data between meshes and facets. In contrast to the existing polyhedral machining approach, the proposed method generates tool paths from an incomplete 2-manifold mesh model. In order to generate gouge-free tool paths, CL-meshes are generated by offsetting boundary edges, boundary vertices, and facets. The CL-meshes are sliced by machining planes and the calculated intersections are sorted, trimmed, and linked. The grid method is used to reduce the computing time when range searching problems arise. The method is fully implemented and verified by machining an incomplete 2-manifold mesh model.

  • This paper suggests the design of MVC model for an authorization tool of UML class diagram. In the design of MVC model, it is designed to define view, controller and model and perform the individual role of each component. The View represents GUI and the Controller is responsible for data input and output and the Model is to handle the business logic. The MVC model design for an authorization tool of class diagram gives the role independently and tries to be flexible with system by dividing into the suitable features of each component.

  • The use of error compensation techniques has been recognized as an effective way in the improvement of the accuracy of a machine tool. The laser measurement method for identifying position errors of machine tool has the disadvantages such as high cost, long calibration time and usage of volumetric error synthesis model. Accordingly, this paper deals with analysis of the position errors of a machine tool using ball bar test without using complicated error synthesis model. Statistical analysis method was adopted in this paper for deriving position errors using hemispherical helix ball bar test.

  • The objective of this study is to estimate and to compensate for the volumetric error of a machine tool. In this paper, the volumetric error is defined and error synthesis model is presented. Then, the volumetric error of workpiece is compared through the virtual machining and a new tool-path is generated to compensate for the error in the post-processor of CAM system using the error synthesis model. By this method, the error is compensated without modification or replacement of a machine tool being in use.

  • This paper presents a prediction of tool deflection and resulting machining error fur sculptured surface productions in the ball-end milling process. Due to the different materials and the dimensions of the tool holder and cutter, a cantilever hem model with three uniform sections is proposed fur the tool deflection model. The ability of this model has been verified by a machining experiment. In this study, cutting force and machining error are investigated. This paper provides the prediction of machining error for sculptured surface to improve machining quality for industrial application.
