Job Enrichment, Empowerment, and Organizational Commitment: The Mediating Role of Work Motivation and Job Satisfaction

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the influence of job enrichment and empowerment on organizational commitment. In addition, the role of work motivation and job satisfaction in mediating the influence of job enrichment and employee empowerment on organizational commitment has also been examined in this study. The sample population consists of all the employees in the regional office of DJKN Bali and Nusa Tenggara, who hold executive positions and have served the office for ≥ 4 years. This study adopts the second-order Partial Least Square (PLS) model and the Smart PLS Version 3.0 program which is used as the analysis tool. The results revealed that: job enrichment has a significant influence on organizational commitment; employee empowerment has an insignificant influence on organizational commitment; work motivation and job satisfaction partially mediate the influence of job enrichment on organizational commitment; work motivation and job satisfaction fully mediate the influence of employee empowerment on organizational commitment. The findings can be used as organizational considerations in developing policies related to job enrichment and employee empowerment, which is expected to motivate and provide satisfaction for employees and improve their organizational commitment.

The Information Distribution Role of Facebook in Universities

  • Purpose: The paper employs the theory of planned behaviour, social identity theory, social presence theory, and social exchange theory to propose a model for using the social media platform Facebook in distributing information in universities. Research design, data and methodology: Data were obtained from 618 students at Hanoi University of Industry (HaUI) in Vietnam. The study used structural equation modeling in SPSS and the statistical analysis software AMOS version 24 to explore the information distribution role of Facebook. Results: Findings reveal that subjective norms and social presence play a key role in driving students to use Facebook for studying. In addition, university administrators can boost student satisfaction and academic achievement through Facebook. Interestingly, students who strongly identify with the brand name of the university have a strong connection with the university are more likely to engage in behaviors supportive toward the university. Conclusions: These findings show that Facebook had played a key information distribution role in universities. Thus, the study provides the executive board of the university and teachers can gain new understanding of why students employ Facebook for studying as well as capitalize on the platform to improve several operational metrics such as brand identification, student satisfaction, and academic achievement.

Involvement of Board Chairmen in Audit Committees and Earnings Management: Evidence from Malaysia

  • This paper investigates the effect of the involvement of the board chairman in the audit committee (AC) on earnings management (EM). It examines Bursa Malaysia-listed companies with the lowest positive earnings for the years 2013 to 2015. The Modified Jones Model by Kasznik (1999) was used to determine discretionary accruals. An AC that includes its board chairman as an ordinary member is associated with greater discretionary accruals. However, a board chairman who is also the chairman of the AC does not seem to influence discretionary accruals. This paper supports the agency theory and policy-makers' efforts to prevent board chairmen from sitting on ACs. It is the first study that uses the agency theory to describe the association between the board chairman's involvement in the both AC and EM. This study alerts policy-makers, stakeholders and researchers to the influence of a board chairman serving on the AC in curbing EM. Furthermore, it provides empirical evidence that the majority of Malaysian companies whose board chairmen are involved in the AC appoint the chairman as an ordinary member of the AC. This indicates that executive directors may affect such actions. Hence, more policies are needed to improve AC independence.

Different strengthening designs and material properties on bending behavior of externally reinforced concrete slab

  • This study investigates the bending behavior of a composite concrete slab roof with different methods of externally strengthing using steel plates and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips. First, the concrete slab model which was reinforced with CFRP strips on the bottom surface of it is validated using experimental data, and then, using numerical modeling, 7 different models of square-shaped composite slab roofs are developed in ABAQUS software using the finite element modeling. Developed models include steel rebar reinforced concrete slab with variable thickness of CFRP and steel plates. Considering the control sample which has no external reinforcement, a set of 8 different reinforcement states has been investigated. Each of these 8 states is examined with 6 different uncertainties in terms of the properties of the materials in the construction of concrete slabs, which make 48 numerical models. In all models loading process is continued until complete failure occurs. The results from numerical investigations showed using the steel plates as an executive method for strengthening, the bending capacity of reinforced concrete slabs is increased in the ultimate bearing capacity of the slab by about 1.69 to 2.48 times. Also using CFRP strips, the increases in ultimate bearing capacity of the slab were about 1.61 to 2.36 times in different models with different material uncertainties.

  • Purpose: This study is to propose a methodology for the formation of space according to the integration of structural concept and architectural concerns in the contemporary era. Beginning with researching on the theoretical fundamentals about surface-structure, it introduces several architectural examples to analyze its own structural form and spatial characteristics, and finally simulates a model for the formation of space through a real work. Method: The study is partially based on the Executive Architectural Project for 'Village of Spring' in Seocheon, which was planned in 2008 to suggest a strategic settlement layout for urban regeneration, and completed in 2012. Making architectural vocabularies permeated into surface-structure, throughout the design process of initially pursued concepts to the design development stage, we could encounter a new type of innovative space formation. It shows that the structure is one of most useful means for the realization of architectural concepts, and a design itself. Result: The expected result of the study intends to enhance the relationship between spatial formation and surface-structure, also ultimately to produce a structural system as 'space generator' to fulfill the social needs and its requirements.

CEO Characteristics and Firm Performance: A Study of Saudi Arabia Listed Firms

  • This paper aims to investigate the impact of chief executive officer's (CEO) attributes on firms' performance. Specifically, it examines the influence of CEOs' education, professional experience, and tenure on Saudi firms' performance. We look at a sample of 120 listed firms on Tadawul stock exchange from 2014 to 2017. Data on financial and accounting variables are obtained from the annual reports of the selected companies. We follow the existing empirical literature and use a panel model and formulate three different equations using the GMM estimator. Findings prove that CEO educational background does matter. In particular, companies employing CEOs with business administration, economics, finance, or accounting degree will perform outstandingly better. Similarly, stock performance gets improved when the CEO has a postgraduate qualification, i.e., when the CEO holds an MBA, a master, or a PhD degree. Besides, results reveal that executives who have an experience in a related field will positively affect the firm's performance. Finally, evidence shows that high CEOs tenure improves corporate performance. Overall, these findings demonstrate that executives' attributes are key factors that would explain differences in Saudi firms' performance. These results would help shareholders to make the right decision in selecting CEOs to manage the company.

분산 FMS의 통합제어를 위한 객체지향 데이타베이스 (Object-Oriented Database for Integrated Control of Distributed FMS)

  • FMS(Flexible Manufacturing System)는 로봇, 수치제어기기 등의 프로그램이 가능한 생산설비 하드웨어로 구성된 분산시스템이다. FMS의 효과적인 운용을 위해서는 생산설비 하드웨어를 통합 제어하기 위한 소프트웨어의 존재가 필수적이다. 그런데 FMS의 복잡성과 다양한 변화가능성은 통합제어 소프트웨어의 구축 및 유지, 보수를 어렵게 한다. 이를 해결하기 위하여 본 논문에서는 객체지향 FMS 통합제어 모델을 제안한다. 제안된 모델에서는 FMS에 실재하는 셀이 가상 셀 객체로 모델되어, 통합제어를 위하여 필요한 데이터와 연산들이 캡슐화되어 객체지향 데이타베이스에 관리된다. 또한 이 밖의 FMS운용을 위해 필수적인 데이타와 이들간의 관계성도 데이타베이스에 관리된다. 본 논문은 제안된 모델을 기반으로 구현한 통합제어 소프트웨어시스템인 FREE(Fms Run Time Executive Environment)를 바탕으로 통합제어 데이타베이스에 대하여 기술한다.

Global Changing of Consumer Behavior to Retail Distribution due to Pandemic of COVID-19: A Systematic Review

  • Purpose: Consumers have unique behaviors that are classified based on their interests and considerations before buying. They are predicted will change due to the pandemic of COVID-19. This study provides insights for retailers about the dynamic of consumer behavior before and during the pandemic, including future predictions. Research design, data and methodology: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement was applied in this study. Seven studies that were selected from five databases meet the criteria for cohort and cross-sectional analyses of gender, age, store types, and environmental concerns. Results: Consumer's gender and age contribute to consumer behavior change. Both offline and online stores can be integrated as omnichannel rather than substitute each other. Product distribution and consumer budget need to be reevaluated by retailers, while internet security is the most essential factor when developing their online transactions. Conclusions: COVID-19 pandemic has a significant impact on changing consumer behavior in most countries. Retailers are encouraged to adapt to the changes by modifying their business model with technology. However, it is still speculated and cannot be generalized due to different cultural and contextual factors. Future studies are always needed to synchronize along with the transition of consumers' behavior.

로컬 거버넌스 실현을 위한 지방의회 기록관리 모형에 관한 연구 (A Study on model for Records Management of Local Assembly to Embody Local Governance)

  • 오늘날 지방자치단체는 중앙정부가 추진하고 있는 지방분권에 대응하는 수단으로 로컬 거버넌스를 지향하고 있다. 로컬 거버넌스는 공사간의 구분없이 협력과 파트너십을 통해 문제의 해결을 도모한다는 점에서 무엇보다도 정보의 공유를 통한 각 행위주체 및 네트워크 형성 운영 자체의 투명성과 책임성이 중요한 과제임을 보여주고 있다. 그런데 이러한 정보의 공유를 위해서는 공유될 정보, 즉 기록이 수집, 관리되는 시스템을 구축하는 것이 전제되어야만 한다. 이런 배경 속에서 지방의회는 주민대표기관이자 전통적인 주민참여 집행기관(단체장) 견제기구로서 로컬 거버넌스를 구성하는 중요한 행위주체가 된다. 그럼에도 불구하고 지방의회에 대한 정보는 부존재하거나 비공개되고 있으며, 공개되는 정보 역시 그 양이나 질에 있어서 시민사회로부터 받는 불신과 저평가를 해소하기에 부족한 현실에 있다. 지방의회는 기록관리에 대한 전반적인 의식변화와 함께 기록관리의 근본적인 개선이 시급한 시점에 이른 것이다. 본 연구는 이러한 문제의식에 근거하여 오늘날 지방의회의 기록관리 실태를 검토하고 이에 대한 개선방안을 제안하였다. 기록은 생산되는 시점부터 관리까지의 모든 프로세스가 합리적인 구조 속에서 일관적으로 수행될 때 진정한 가치를 구현할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 무엇보다도 지방의회에서 반드시 생산 관리되어야 하는 기록을 기록물분류기준표의 단위업무를 통해 제어할 수 있도록 하였으며, 처리과-기록관-전문관리기관이라는 세 단계로 구분된 우리의 기록관리체계에 부응하여 적용할 수 있는 기록관리정책 및 기록관의 설치를 제안하였다. 마지막으로, 지방의회가 기록관리에 의해 실현하는 투명성과 책임성의 확보와 더불어, 기록관리 자체로 로컬 거버넌스 실현의 유력한 수단이 되는 여러 효과에 대해 정리하였다.

철학기반의 서비스경제시대 인재상 연구 (A Study on Philosophy-based Human Resource Model in the Service Economy Era)

  • 과거의 제조업 중심 산업경제시대와는 다르게 서비스경제시대는 무형재화중심, 지식보편화, 욕구확장 등의 특징을 가지며 경제의 근간이 되는 많은 것들이 변화하고 있다. 과거에는 환경이 변화하는 속도가 빠르지 않았기 때문에 변화된 환경을 분석한 후 기업에 필요한 인재상을 도출하더라도 오랜 기간 조직에 바람직한 인재상을 유지할 수 있었지만 최근에는 환경 변화 속도가 빨라 선제적으로 인재상을 구축하여 적용하지 않으면 효과적인 경영을 하기 어려운 상황이 되었다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 데이터 분석에 의한 기술적(Descriptive) 방식의 인재상 모델 연구가 아닌 바람직한 인재상 모델 도출을 위한 규범적(Normative) 연구를 수행하였다. 현 시대의 특성과 인류사회의 본질을 분석하여 인재상 모델 구축에 반영하였다. 우주의 공통원리, 동양의 대표사상, 서양의 대표사상을 반영하여 인재상의 기본 모델을 구축하였다. 현대 서비스경제시대에 맞는 인재상을 도출하기 위해 현대 경제사회와 현대정신을 분석하여 반영하였다. 도출된 모델은 조직의 두 대립자인 경영자와 직원이 치열한 상호작용을 하며 변증법적으로 균형을 이루어가는 모델이다. 즉 현대 조직에서의 바람직한 인재는 경영자의 역할을 함께 수행해야 하며, 현대 조직의 경영자상과 인재상은 동전의 앞뒷면처럼 서로 연결되어 있는 구조라고 할 수 있다. 인재상의 철학을 인간관, 역사관, 사회관, 경제관, 경영관 등 5개 차원으로 제시하였으며, 인재상 모델은 주인성, 이성성, 지혜, 고객지향성, 혁신성, 유연성, 자율성, 협업성 등 8개 요소로 도출하였다. 또한 본 연구에서는 일반적인 인재상 모델이 기업의 근무형태에 따라 달라질 수 있음을 제시하였으며, 향후 각 기업에 인재상을 반영하기 위한 구체적이고 실증적인 후속 연구들이 필요하다.
