  • A Satellite shipping container must afford the satellite a relatively benign thermal, vibration, and particle environment that is oblivious to the extreme temperatures, sand, dust, vibrations and shocks that can accompany the transportation. In this study, we have designed a vibration isolation system of a spacecraft container that will be used to transport a satellite called KOMPSAT (KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite) -2 from KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) Taejon to its launch site. To identify the dynamic characteristics of the system, a 1/3-scaled mockup of the container was developed. A large electro-magnetic shaker (Max. 240 KN) was used to excite the mockup, and vibration signals from 20 points were collected for modal tests. Numerical simulations through CATIA 3D Modeling were performed to identify the behavior of isolation springs. The results showed that a simplified model predicts the behavior in a reasonable accuracy. Moreover, the model guides us how to design a full-scaled satellite-shipping container.

  • The use of asbestos has been completely prohibited in Korea since 2015. Therefore, nationally, the asbestos demolitions in the building are actively underway. In the process of demolishing asbestos, scattering dust occurs, which poses a risk to human body. These dusts causes fatal disease, and especially there is an increasing concern of safety about construction workers and building users. Until this day, however, only few researches have been conducted on asbestos demolishing process. Accordingly, it is necessary to analyze key factors and to develop a safety prediction model for workers. This study is an early stage of building quantified DB, and aims to actualize the safety problems of asbestos demolishing process using text mining method.

  • Geopolymer mortar compressed blocks were prepared using fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, silica fume and metakaolin as binders and sand/quarry dust/pond ash as fine aggregate. Alkaline solution was used to activate the source materials for synthesizing the geopolymer mortar. Fresh mortar was used to obtain the compressed blocks. The strength development with reference to different parameters was studied. The different parameters considered were fineness of fly ash, binder components, type of fine aggregate, molarity of alkaline solution, age of specimen, fluid-to-binder ratio, binder-to-aggregate ratio, degree of saturation, etc. The compressed blocks were tested for compression at different ages. It was observed that some of the blocks attained considerable strength within 24 h under ambient conditions. The cardinal aim was to analyze the experimental data generated to formulate a phenomenological model to arrive at the combinations of the ingredients to produce geopolymer blocks to meet the strength development desired at the specified age. The strength data was analyzed within the framework of generalized Abrams' law. It was interesting to note that the law was applicable to the analysis of strength development of partially saturated compressed blocks when the degree of saturation was maintained constant. The validity of phenomenological model was examined with an independent set of experimental data. The blocks can replace the traditional masonry blocks with many advantages.

  • Dust collecting performance of cyclone collector for oil mist was alalyzed in the study. The purposes of using cutting fluid during cutting have been colling, lubricating, chip washing and anti-corroding. However, the present manufactaring industry restricts the use of cutting fluid because cutting fluid confains poisonous substances which are harmful to the human body. Also, the optimum design oil-mist collector. The new oil mist collector was designed. In the near future, this device must be tested in the real machining center and CNC machine. Cutting using oil-mist showed better cutting characteristics than dry, air and fluid cutting with respect to by cutting force, tool wear and surface roughness. The model(A, B Type cyclone) of the set of fixture and alveolus are made by using a CAE software. Finally, we have obtained a model A Type solution by using orthogonal array. Therefore, it could be confirmed that as the model-A was increased and model-B was decreased, cut diameter was decreased.

  • The failure rate model of External Environment Maintenance(EEM) for a system under severe environment is investigated. EEM, which is recently introduced concept, is a maintenance activity controlling external environment factors that potentially cause system failure such as cleaning equipment, controlling temperature (humidity) and removing dust inside of electronic appliances. EEM can not have any influence on the inherent failure rate of a system but reduce the severity of the external environment causing failure since it deals with only external environment factors. Therefore, we propose two failure rate models to express the improvement effect of EEM: The intensity reduction model and age reduction model. The intensity and age reduction models of EEM are developed assuming the quality of improvement effect is proportioned to an extra intensity or age respectively. The validation of proposed failure rate models is performed in order of data generation, parameter estimation and test for goodness-of-fit.

  • Over recent years, high-concentration of particulate matters (e.g., a.k.a. fine dust) in South Korea has increasingly evoked considerable concerns about public health. It is intractable to track and report $PM_{10}$ measurements to the public on a real-time basis. Even worse, such records merely amount to averaged particulate concentration at particular regions. Under this circumstance, people are prone to being at risk at rapidly dispersing air pollution. To address this challenge, we attempt to build a predictive model via deep learning to the concentration of particulates ($PM_{10}$). The proposed method learns a binary decision rule on the basis of video sequences to predict whether the level of particulates ($PM_{10}$) in real time is harmful (>$80{\mu}g/m^3$) or not. To our best knowledge, no vision-based $PM_{10}$ measurement method has been proposed in atmosphere research. In experimental studies, the proposed model is found to outperform other existing algorithms in virtue of convolutional deep learning networks. In this regard, we suppose this vision based-predictive model has lucrative potentials to handle with upcoming challenges related to particulate measurement.

  • Background: Air pollution has led to an increased exposure of all living organisms to fine dust. Therefore, research efforts are being made to devise preventive and therapeutic remedies against fine dust-induced chronic diseases. Methods: Research of the respiratory protective effects of KRG extract in a particulate matter (PM; aerodynamic diameter of <4 ㎛) plus diesel exhaust particle (DEP) (PM4+D)-induced airway inflammation model. Nitric oxide production, expression of pro-inflammatory mediators and cytokines, and IRAK-1, TAK-1, and MAPK pathways were examined in PM4-stimulated MH-S cells. BALB/c mice exposed to PM4+D mixture by intranasal tracheal injection three times a day for 12 days at 3 day intervals and KRGE were administered orally for 12 days. Histological of lung and trachea, and immune cell subtype analyses were performed. Expression of pro-inflammatory mediators and cytokines in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and lung were measured. Immunohistofluorescence staining for IRAK-1 localization in lung were also evaluated. Results: KRGE inhibited the production of nitric oxide, the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators and cytokines, and expression and phosphorylation of all downstream factors of NF-κB, including IRAK-1 and MAPK/AP1 pathway in PM4-stimulated MH-S cells. KRGE suppressed inflammatory cell infiltration and number of immune cells, histopathologic damage, and inflammatory symptoms in the BALF and lungs induced by PM4+D; these included increased alveolar wall thickness, accumulation of collagen fibers, and TNF-α, MIP2, CXCL-1, IL-1α, and IL-17 cytokine release. Moreover, PM4 participates induce alveolar macrophage death and interleukin-1α release by associating with IRAK-1 localization was also potently inhibited by KRGE in the lungs of PM4+D-induced airway inflammation model. KRGE suppresses airway inflammatory responses, including granulocyte infiltration into the airway, by regulating the expression of chemokines and inflammatory cytokines via inhibition of IRAK-1 and MAPK pathway. Conclusion: Our results indicate the potential of KRGE to serve as an effective therapeutic agent against airway inflammation and respiratory diseases.

  • A bushing is very important because it must supply the high voltage to the power equipment. Generally, the surface of bushing is contaminated with rain, dust, salt and others. A bushing with contaminations at air are serious problem in insulation. Therefore, it is important to understand the inspection and diagnoses of the safety. The ultra-violet rays(UV) camera has attracted interest from the view point of easy judgement. In this paper, we will report on the corona discharge characteristics on bushing model with contaminations. Also, UV images of discharge in air are analyzed using prototype UV camera of Korea. These results are studied at both AC and DC voltage under a non-uniform field.

  • Empirical model, phenomenological model, and CFD model have been used to evaluate the blast effects produced by explosion of explosives, flammable gas and liquid or dust. TNT equivalence method which is one of empirical models has been widely used as it is simple. In this study, new peak overpressure-scaled distance and scaled impulse-scaled distance equations are induced through fitting data from the curves given by TNT equivalence method. If the TNT equivalent mass is calculated, it is possible to estimate the peak overpressure and impulse using the regression equations. Differences of peak overpressure with yield factor which is a component of TNT equivalence method are found to be great in near-by distances from explosion source where the increase in overpressure is very steep, but the differences are getting smaller as the distances increase.

  • A basic experimental study has been carried out to find out the design parameters of fuel 2-staging atomizers in order to reduce nitrogen oxides(NOx) rate emitted from the steam boilers used the liquid fuel. The heavy fuel oil(B-Coil) and fuel 2-staging Y-jet twin-fluid atomizers were adopted in this study. The results of this paper were obtained from the real as well as the model scale atomizers. In the case of model atomizers test, NOx reduction rate was strongly dependent on the staged fuel rate, but it was weakly dependent on the injection hole arrangement and air swirl conditions. The real scale atomizers was designed and manufactured on the base of these test results, and those was mounted and operated in the real boiler generates 185 ton steam per an hour. The reduction rate of the model and real plant was reached 10∼30% of base NOx by atomizers. but dust was sharply increased in the low O$_2$combustion region of the real plant.
