  • The application of particle reaction model in the packed bed process modeling is discussed for iron ore pellet induration process. Combustion of coke breeze in the pellet is estimated by using shrinking unreacted-core model and grain model in which the progress of chemical reaction is described in different concepts. Under the identical inlet gas and solid conditions, the calculation using shrinking core model showed deviated results in terms of temperature profile and conversion fraction, which may imply the significance of selecting proper particle reaction model in consideration of particle characteristics and process operation conditions.

  • This study aimed to analyze the trajectories of cognitive function and functional disability, and to identify the impacts of socio-demographic factors on the two variables. Based on the assumption that there are differences according to the progress of cognitive impairment, it focused on examining the differences in trajectories of cognitive function and functional disability between two groups: dementia conversion group and dementia non-conversion group among cognitively normal older adults. This study was conducted based on the data from a 3-wave panel study of a sample of 966 Yeoncheon elderly cohort aged 65 and over between 1997 and 2003. Latent growth curve model and multi-group structural equation modeling were used to examine the hypothesis. Results revealed that dementia conversion group exhibited faster rate of cognitive decline as well as lower initial cognitive level. Difference between two groups was not significant in the initial level of functional disability, yet dementia conversion group showed greater degree of deterioration in the functional disability over time than dementia non-conversion group did. In terms of the influence of socio-demographic factors on cognitive function and functional disability, the cognitive decline was more drastic in the female group, whereas functional decline was more apparent for the male group. The level of education in early life had a strong impact on the cognitive function in later life. Based on these findings, practical implication for high risk groups in cognitive function and functional disability were discussed.

  • This study is intended to develop a improved version of Cross Impact Analysis Model based on Scaling Theory. In developing the model, we applied the scale transformation technique and regression technique to existing CIA model. Improved CIA model is composed of two sub-models: 'model for impact value measurement,' and 'model for impact value conversion'. We applied a technique which measures data by ordinal scale and then transforms them into interval scale and ratio scale data to CIA model. The accuracy of forecasting and the usability of CIA application have been improved.

  • A mathematical model was developed to simulate the performance of a prototype wind-powered reverse osmosis desalination system. The model consists of two sub-models operated in a series. The first sub-model is the wind-energy conversion sub-model, which has wind energy and feed water as its input and pressurized feed water as its output. The second sub-model is a reverse osmosis (RO) process sub-model, with pressurized feed water as its input and the flow and salinity of the product water or permeate as its output. Model coefficients were determined based on field experiments of a prototype wind powered RO desalination system of the University of Hawaii, from June to December 2001. The mathematical model developed by this study predicts the performance of wind-powered RO desalination systems under different design conditions. The system optimization is achieved using a linear programming approach. Based on the results of system optimization, a design guide is prepared, which can be used by both manufacturer and end-user of the wind-driven reverse osmosis system.

  • In this study, we developed an approach to better account for uncertainties in estimated contributions from fine particulate matter ($PM_{2.5}$) modeling. Our approach computes a Concentration Correction Factor (CCF) which is a ratio of observed concentrations to baseline model concentrations. We multiply modeled direct contribution estimates with CCF to obtain revised contributions. Overall, the modeling system showed reasonably good performance, correlation coefficient R of 0.82 and normalized mean bias of 2%, although the model underestimated some PM species concentrations. We also noticed that model biases vary seasonally. We compared contribution estimates of major source sectors before and after applying CCFs. We observed that different source sectors showed variable magnitudes of sensitivities to the CCF application. For example, the total primary $PM_{2.5}$ contribution was increased $2.4{\mu}g/m^3$ or 63% after the CCF application. Out of a $2.4{\mu}g/m^3$ increment, line sources and area source made up $1.3{\mu}g/m^3$ and $0.9{\mu}g/m^3$ which is 92% of the total contribution changes. We postulated two major reasons for variations in estimated contributions after the CCF application: (1) monthly variability of unadjusted contributions due to emission source characteristics and (2) physico-chemical differences in environmental conditions that emitted precursors undergo. Since emissions-to-$PM_{2.5}$ concentration conversion rate is an important piece of information to prioritize control strategy, we examined the effects of CCF application on the estimated conversion rates. We found that the application of CCFs can alter the rank of conversion efficiencies of source sectors. Finally, we discussed caveats of our current approach such as no consideration of ion neutralization which warrants further studies.

  • In this paper, format conversion filters are proposed, which have advantages in hardware implementation compared to the ones proposed in MPEG-4 Video Verification Model. since each coefficients of the proposed filters is constrained to have less than two non-zero digits in minimal signed digit representation, multiplication of input and the coefficient can be implemented by a single adder. As a result, the proposed filters have advantages in hardware complexity and speed, compared to the filters which are usually implemented by integer multiplier or carry save adders. Six kinds of filters are proposed in MPEG-4 Video Verification Model for size conversion of 2:1, 4:1, 5:3 and 5:6. We design 5 filters for the same purpose and compare the performance. The remaining one is very simple to implement. For comparing the filtering performance, we first compare the results of sine wave frequency conversion as an indirect but meaningful comparison. Second. We compute the PSNR of the images obtained from the proposed filters and the ones proposed by MPEG, with reference to the images obtained by using double precision arithmetic and high order filter. The results show that the performance of the proposed filters is almost the same as that of the filters proposed by MPEG. In conclusion, the peroformance of the proposed filters is comparable to that of the ones in MPEG-4, while requiring lower hardware complexity and providing high operating speed.

  • Voice conversion, a technology that allows an individual's speech data to be regenerated with the acoustic properties(tone, cadence, gender) of another, has countless applications in education, communication, and entertainment. This paper proposes an approach based on the StarGAN-VC model that generates realistic-sounding speech without requiring parallel utterances. To overcome the constraints of the existing StarGAN-VC model that utilizes one-hot vectors of original and target speaker information, this paper extracts feature vectors of target speakers using a pre-trained version of Rawnet3. This results in a latent space where voice conversion can be performed without direct speaker-to-speaker mappings, enabling an any-to-any structure. In addition to the loss terms used in the original StarGAN-VC model, Wasserstein distance is used as a loss term to ensure that generated voice segments match the acoustic properties of the target voice. Two Time-Scale Update Rule (TTUR) is also used to facilitate stable training. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms previous methods, including the StarGAN-VC network on which it was based.

  • In this study, we have intended to analyze the possibility of using the precise geoid model and to find the best geoid model for working by the airborne LiDAR system. So we have calculated the geoid height from the precise geoid models (KGEOID08, EGM2008, EIGEN-CG03C) and have analyzed results by comparing the geometric geoid height from surveying and geoid heights from geoid models. As a result, the KGEOID08 that had 0.152m of RMSE was assessed the best geoid model for making DEM(DTM) by airborne LiDAR system. Also we have found the needed arrangement and numbers of reference point when the KGEOID08 was used for conversion into orthometric height of LiDAR data.

  • In the process of constructing the traditional offensive and defensive game theory model, these are some shortages for considering the dynamic change of security risk problem. By analysing the critical indicators of the incomplete information game theory model, incomplete information attack and defense game theory model and the mathematical engineering method for solving Bayes-Nash equilibrium, the risk-averse income function for information assets is summarized as the problem of maximising the return of the equilibrium point. To obtain the functional relationship between the optimal strategy combination of the offense and defense and the information asset security probability and risk probability. At the same time, the offensive and defensive examples are used to visually analyse and demonstrate the incomplete information game and the Harsanyi conversion method. First, the incomplete information game and the Harsanyi conversion problem is discussed through the attack and defense examples and using the game tree. Then the strategy expression of incomplete information static game and the engineering mathematics method of Bayes-Nash equilibrium are given. After that, it focuses on the offensive and defensive game problem of unsafe information network based on risk aversion. The problem of attack and defense is obtained by the issue of maximizing utility, and then the Bayes-Nash equilibrium of offense and defense game is carried out around the security risk of assets. Finally, the application model in network security penetration and defense is analyzed by designing a simulation example of attack and defense penetration. The analysis results show that the constructed income function model is feasible and practical.

  • EFDC model, which is capable of handling both hydrodynamic and water quality analysis has come to use for many recent studies. In order to assess the applicability of the EFDC model, it was applied to Nakdong river. Hydrodynamic and water quality analysis were carried out for Nakbon GH and HI sections chosen as the area of study with gaged data from 2008 to 2009. The comparison was made between water quality simulation results and observed data over water temperature, COD, TOC, DO, TN and TP. On the contrary, a conversion formula was derived to calculate BOD which the EFDC model cannot directly calculates and it was compared to measured data. In this study, it was determined that the EFDC model well represents the behavior of both hydrodynamics and water quality. However, further research on COD, TOC and accurate conversion of BOD needs to be conducted for efficient application to domestic water quality analysis.
