  • An efficient one dimensional finite element model has been presented for the dynamic analysis of composite laminated beams, using the efficient layerwise zigzag theory. To meet the convergence requirements for the weak integral formulation, cubic Hermite interpolation is used for the transverse displacement ($w_0$), and linear interpolation is used for the axial displacement ($u_0$) and shear rotation (${\psi}_0$). Each node of an element has four degrees of freedom. The expressions of variationally consistent inertia, stiffness matrices and the load vector are derived in closed form using exact integration. The formulation is validated by comparing the results with the 2D-FE results for composite symmetric and sandwich beams with various end conditions. The employed finite element model is free of shear locking. The present zigzag finite element results for natural frequencies, mode shapes of cantilever and clamped-clamped beams are obtained with a one-dimensional finite element codes developed in MATLAB. These 1D-FE results for cantilever and clamped beams are compared with the 2D-FE results obtained using ABAQUS to show the accuracy of the developed MATLAB code, for zigzag theory for these boundary conditions. This comparison establishes the accuracy of zigzag finite element analysis for dynamic response under given boundary conditions.

  • We have experimentally demonstrated a Direct Optical Switching (DOS) CDMA for future wide-band mobile communication systems at the 40 ㎓ band by using orthogonal (crosscorrelation $\leq$2) unipolar type codes with code length of 16 and chip rate of 2.5 Gcps for radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems. Pulse-amplitude-equalized 40 ㎓ laser pulses were provided by rational-harmonically mode-locking a 10 ㎓ fiber ring laser.

  • This paper is dedicated to nonlinear static and free vibration analysis of Uniform Distributed Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Composite (UD-CNTRC) structures under in-plane loading. The authors have suggested an efficient six-node triangular element. Mixed Interpolation of Tensorial Components (MITC) approach is employed to alleviate the membrane locking phenomena. Moreover, the behavior of the well-known LST element is considerably improved by applying an additional linear interpolation on the strain fields. Based on the rule of mixture, the properties of CNTRC are obtained. In this study, only the uniform distributed CNTs are employed through the thickness direction of element. To achieve the natural frequencies and shape modes, the eigenvalue problem is also solved. Using Total Lagrangian Principles, large amplitude free vibration is considered based on the first normalized mode shape of structure. Different well-known plane problem benchmarks and some proposed ones are studied to validate the accuracy and capability of authors' formulations. In addition, the effects of length to the height ratio of beam, CNT's characteristics, support conditions and normalized amplitude parameter on the linear and nonlinear vibration parameters are investigated.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the optimal number of additional half hitches for achieving an optimal knot-holding capacity (KHC) of Lockable sliding knots. Methods: Four configurations of arthroscopic knots (Duncan loop, Field knot, Giant knot, and SMC knot) were tested for their knot-holding capacity. For each knot configuration, 6 sequential knots were made including the initial sliding knot and additional 5 knots by incrementing one half hitches at a time. Each added half-hitch were in reversing half-hitches with alternate posts (RHAPs) fashion. For each sequential knot configuration, 12 knots were made by No. 2 braided sutures. On the servo-hydraulic material testing system (Instron 8511, MTS, Minneapolis, MN), cyclic loading, load to clinical failure (3-mm displacement), load to ultimate failure, and mode of failure were measured. Results: Most of the initial loop without additional half-hitch showed dynamic failure with cyclic loading. The mean displacement after the end of cyclic loading decreased with each additional half-hitches. SMC and Giant knot reached plateau to 0.1 mm or less displacement after one additional half-hitch, shereas Field and Duncan loop needed 3 additional half-hitches. The SMC and Duncan knots needed 1 additional half-hitch to reach greater than 80N at clinical failure, whefeas the other 2 knots needed2 additional half-hitches. For the load exceeding 100N for clinical failure, the SMC knot required 3 additional half-hitches and the other three knots needed 4 additional half-hitches. As the number of additional half-hitches incremented, the mode of failure switched from pure loop failure (slippage) to material failure (breakage). Duncan loop showed poor loop security in that even with 5 additional half-hitches, some failed by slippage (17%). On the other hand, after 3 additional half-hitches, the 3 other knots showed greater than 75% of failure by material breakage mode (SMC and Field 92%, Giant 75%). Conclusion: Even with its own locking mechanism, lockable sliding knot alone does not withstand the initial dynamic cyclic load. For all tested variables, SMC knot requires a minimum of 2 additional half-hitches. Duncan knot may need more than 3 additional half-hitches for optimal security. All knots showed a mear plateau in knot security with 3 or more additional half-hitches.

  • The second harmonic, wavelength is 397nm, of the continuous wave diode laser, whose maximum power is 35mW, was generated in $LiIO_3$ crystals in a ring enhancement cavity. 5mm- and 10mm-long crystals cut $43.21^{\circ}$ for optic axis were used in this experiment. Both surfaces of those were anti-reflection coated for 794nm. In case the crystal was inserted into the cavity, the condition of separation between two concave mirrors for the optimum mode matching was found. The conversion efficiency of second harmonic generation was increased by the resonant enhancement of pumping power in the ring enhancement cavity, and the frequency of diode laser was locked to that of the counter-propagation mode generated from the surface of crystal. When the pumping power was 28 mW, the infrared buildup factor was about 45 without the crystal, and 14 with the crystal due to the transmission loss of crystal. The maximum second harmonic powers of $1.5{\mu}W$ and $6.6{\mu}W$ were obtained, and corresponding conversion efficiencies were $(6.584{\pm}0.56){\times}10^{-3}$%, $2.6{\pm}0.21){\times}10%{-2}$% in 5mm- and 10mm-long $LiIO_3$, respectively.

LT-InGaAs:Be/InAlAs multi quantum well (MQW)를 well과 barrier를 가각 $10{\mu}m$ 씩 100주기 성장을 하였고 Ti와 Au를 각각 30, $200{\mu}m$로 dipole antenna를 제작 하였다.

  • Choi et al./sup 1)/ presented the total Lagrangian formulation based upon the degenerated shell element. Geometrically correct formulation is developed by updating the direction of normal vectors and taking into account the second order rotation terms in the incremental displacement field. Assumed strain concept is adopted in order to overcome the shear locking phenomena and to eliminate the spurious zero energy mode. In this paper, for the ultimate strength analysis of stiffened shell structures considering effects of residual stresses, the return mapping algorithm based on the consistent elasto-plastic tangent modulus is applied to anisotropic shell structures. In addition, the load/displacement incremental scheme is adopted for non-linear F.E. analysis. Based on such methodology, the computer program is developed and numerical examples to demonstrate the accuracy and the effectiveness of the proposed shell element are presented and compared with the results in literatures.

  • We obtained analytic solutions of boundary conditions to the stable region of Z-fold $Cr^{4+}$ : YAG laser cavity when the conditions are with and without thermal tensing effect. Also we investigated the influence of the thermal tensing effect on the stability of cavity, beam waist, and astigmatic compensation using aberration transformation matrices. The thermal tensing effect almost has no influence on the stable region of the cavity when the crystal is located in the middle of two concave mirrors and when the distances from the concave mirror to the reflecting mirror and the output coupler are the same. The beam waist, however, is affected more in a tangential plane than in a sagittal plane, and so it is difficult to have astigmatic compensation when the thermal tensing effect exists. This result means that the thermal tensing effect should be considered even for the Kerr-lens mode-locking.

  • We demonstrate bidirectional long-reach 35-channel dense wavelength division multiplexing-passive optical network(DWDM-PON) based on wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes (F-P LDs). The mode control of F-P LD enhances output power at decreased the required injection power. We show packet-loss-free transmission in all 70 channels at 125 Mb/s per channel line rate through 70 km of single mode fiber without optical amplifier The DWDM-PON can consolidate a metro network into an access network by bypassing the central offices within its reach. The proposed DWDM-PON can accommodate about 80 subscribers with an EDFA-based broadband light source. Further expansion up to 100 subscribers is possible with a semiconductor-based BLS.
