  • The Hilbert Huang Transform (HHT) technigue with Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) is one of the time-frequency domain analysis methods and it has several advantages such that analyzing non-stationary and nonlinear signal is possible. However, there are shortcomings in detecting near-range of frequencies and added noise signals. In this paper, to analyze characteristics of each method, HHT and Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) effective in dealing with stationary signals are compared. And with thermoacoustic instabilities signals from a Rijke tube test, HHT and the improved HHT with Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) are compared. The results show that the improved HHT is more appropriate than the original HHT due to the relative insensitivity to noise. Therefore it will result in more accurate analysis.

  • A free-surface correction(FSC) method is presented to solve the 3-D shallow water equations. Using the mode splitting process, FSC method can simulate shallow water flows under the hydrostatic assumption. For the hydrostatic pressure calculation, the momentum equations are firstly discretized using a semi-implicit scheme over the vertical direction leading to the tri-diagonal matrix systems. A semi-implicit scheme has been adopted to reduce the numerical instability caused by relatively small vertical length scale compare to horizontal one. and, as the free surface correction step the final horizontal velocity fields are corrected after the final surface elevations are obtained. Finally, the vertical final velocity fields can be calculated from the continuity equation. The numerical model is applied to the calculation of the simulation of flow fields in a rectangular open channel with the tidal influence. The comparisons with the analytical solutions show overall good agreements between the numerical results and analytical solutions.

  • As the metal transfer in the GMAW process affects the weld quality and productivity, the mechanism of molten formation and detachment has been investigated at various welding conditions. The force balance and pinch instability models have been widely used to analyze the metal transfer in the globular and spray modes, respectively A new approach is proposed in this work by minimizing the energy of molten drop system. Effects of the surface tension, gravity, electromagnetic and drag forces are considered with no presumed molten drop geometry. Effects of various welding conditions on the metal transfer are explained. The results show that the proposed mode can be applied to the globular and spray transfer modes. When compared with other models, results of the proposed model show better agreements with the available experimental data, which demonstrates the validity of the present model.

  • On-line dynamic security assessment is becoming more and more important for the stable operation of power systems as load level increases. The necessity is getting apparent under Electricity Market environments, as operation of power system is exposed to more various operating conditions. For on-line dynamic security assessment, fast transient stability analysis tool is required for contingency selection. The TEF(Transient Energy Function) method is a good candidate for this purpose. The clustering of critical generators is crucial for the precise and fast calculation of energy margin. In this paper, we propose a new method for fast decision of mode of instability by using stability indices. Case study shows very promising results.

  • In this paper, the stability of a rotating cantilever pipe conveying fluid with a crack is investigated by the numerical method. That is, the influences of the rotating angular velocity, mass ratio and crack severity on the critical flow velocity for flutter instability of system are studied. The equations of motion of rotating pipe are derived using the Euler beam theory and the Lagrange's equation. The crack section of pipe is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged pipe segments. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. Generally, the critical flow velocity for flutter is proportional to the angular velocity and the depth of crack. Also, the critical flow velocity and stability maps of the rotating pipe system as a function of mass ratio for the changing each parameter are obtained.

  • In the analysis of metal forming processes by the finite element method, there are many numerical instabilities such as element locking, hourglass mode, shear locking. These instabilities may have a bad effect upon accuracy and convergence. The present work is concerned with improvement of stability and efficiency in two dimensional rigid-plastic finite element method using various type of elements and numerical integration schemes. AS metal forming examples, upsetting and backward extrusion are taken for comparison among the methods : various element types and numerical integration schemes. comparison is made in terms of stability and efficiency. As a result, it has been shown that the finite element computation is stabilized from the viewpoint of computational time, convergency, and numerical instability.

  • The paper deals with gravitational effect on dynamic stability of a cantilevered pipe conveying fluid. The eigenvalue branches and modes associated with flutter of cantilevered pipes conveying fluid are fully investigated. Governing equations of motion are derived by extended Hamilton's principle, and the solutions are sought by Galerkin's method. Root locus diagrams are plotted for different values of mass ratio of the pipe, and the order of branch in root locus diagrams is defined. The flutter modes of the pipe at the critical flow velocities are drawn at every one of the twelfth period. The transference of flutter-type instability from one eigenvalue branches to another is investigated thoroughly.

  • A hybrid method is presented for efficient computation of turbulent flow noise at low Mach numbers. In this method, the turbulent flow field is computed by incompressible large eddy simulation (LES), while the acoustic field is computed with the linearized perturbed compressible equations (LPCE) derived in this study. Since LPCE is computed on the rather coarse acoustic grid with the flow variables and source term obtained by the incompressible LES, the computational efficiency of calculation is greatly enhanced. Furthermore, LPCE suppress the instability of perturbed vortical mode and therefore secure consistent and stable acoustic solutions. The proposed LES/LPCE hybrid method is applied to three low Mach number turbulent flow noise problems: i) circular cylinder, ii) isolated flat plate, and iii) interaction between cylinder wake and airfoil. The computed results are closely compared with the experimental measurements.

  • In this study, we investigate the plugging effect on the CE type steam generator tube. The natural frequency and mode shape will be changed due to decrease of the effective mass distribution along the tube. We compared the variation of stability ratio for plugged tube with that for unplugged one. The natural frequency increased because of removing the cooling water inside the steam generator tube, but the stability ratio decreased inversely because of changing the vibrational model shape. We also investigated the turbulent excitation effect.
