This study investigated the possibility of using the recorded micro tremor data on ground level as ambient vibration input excitation data for investigation and application Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) on the bench-scale earthquake simulator (The Quanser Shake Table) for model chimney. As known OMA methods (such as EFDD, SSI and so on) are supposed to deal with the ambient responses. For this purpose, analytical and experimental modal analysis of a model chimney for dynamic characteristics was performed. 3D Finite element model of the chimney was evaluated based on the design drawing. Ambient excitation was provided by shake table from the recorded micro tremor ambient vibration data on ground level. Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition is used for the output only modal identification. From this study, best correlation is found between mode shapes. Natural frequencies and analytical frequencies in average (only) 1.996% are different.
Traditional structural dynamic analysis and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of large scale concrete civil structures rely on manufactured embedding transducers to obtain structural dynamic properties. However, the embedding of manufactured transducers is very expensive and low efficiency for signal acquisition. In dynamic structural analysis and SHM areas, piezoelectric transducers are more and more popular due to the advantages like quick response, low cost and adaptability to different sizes. In this paper, the applicable feasibility assessment of the designed "artificial" piezoelectric transducers called Concrete Piezoelectric Smart Module (CPSM) in dynamic structural analysis is performed via three major experiments. Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA) based on Ibrahim Time Domain (ITD) Method is applied to experimentally extract modal parameters. Numerical modal analysis by finite element method (FEM) modeling is also performed for comparison. First ten order modal parameters are identified by EMA using CPSMs, PCBs and FEM modeling. Comparisons are made between CPSMs and PCBs, between FEM and CPSMs extracted modal parameters. Results show that Power Spectral Density by CPSMs and PCBs are similar, CPSMs acquired signal amplitudes can be used to predict concrete compressive strength. Modal parameter (natural frequencies) identified from CPSMs acquired signal and PCBs acquired signal are different in a very small range (~3%), and extracted natural frequencies from CPSMs acquired signal and FEM results are in an allowable small range (~5%) as well. Therefore, CPSMs are applicable for signal acquisition of dynamic responses and can be used in dynamic modal analysis, structural health monitoring and related areas.

This study determines the water length effects on the modal behavior of a prototype arch dam using Operational and Analytical Modal Analyses. Achievement of this purpose involves construction of a prototype arch dam-reservoir-foundation model under laboratory conditions. In the model, reservoir length was taken to be as much as three times the dam height. To determine the experimental dynamic characteristics of the arch dam using Operational Modal Analysis, ambient vibration tests were implemented for empty reservoir and three different reservoir water lengths. In the ambient vibration tests, the dam was vibrated by natural excitations provided from small impact effects and the response signals were measured using sensitive accelerometers. Operational Modal Analysis software process signals collected from the ambient vibration tests, and Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition and Stochastic Subspace Identification techniques estimated modal parameters of the dams. To validate the experimental results, 3D finite element model of the prototype arch dam was modeled by ANSYS software for empty reservoir and three different reservoir water lengths, and dynamic characteristics of each model were determined analytically. At the end of the study, experimentally and analytically identified dynamic characteristics compared to each other. Also, changes on the natural frequencies along to water length are plotted as graphs. Results suggest that reservoir water complicates the modal behavior of the arch dam significantly.

The instrumented Canton Tower is a 610 m high-rise structure, which has been considered as a benchmark problem for structural health monitoring (SHM) research. In this paper, an improved automatic modal identification method is presented based on a natural excitation technique in conjunction with the eigensystem realization algorithm (NExT/ERA). In the proposed modal identification method, damping ratio, consistent mode indicator from observability matrices (CMI_O) and modal amplitude coherence (MAC) are used as criteria to distinguish the physically true modes from spurious modes. Enhanced frequency domain decomposition (EFDD), the data-driven stochastic subspace identification method (SSI-DATA) and the proposed method are respectively applied to extract the modal parameters of the Canton Tower under different environmental conditions. Results of modal parameter identification based on output-only measurements are presented and discussed. User-selected parameters used in those methods are suggested and discussed. Furthermore, the effect of environmental conditions on the dynamic characteristics of Canton tower is investigated.

This paper, presents a comparison between numerical analysis and field test on a real offshore platform in Bohai Bay, China. This platform is a steel jacket offshore platform with vertical piles. The field testing under wave-induced force and wind force etc. was conducted, in order to obtain the dynamic parameters of the structure, including the frequencies of the jacket platform, as well as the corresponding damping ratios and mode shapes. The natural excitation technology (NexT) combined with eigensystem realization algorithm (ERA) and the peak picking (PP) method in frequency domain are carried out for modal parameter indentification under operational conditions. The three-dimeansional finite element model (FEM) is constructed by ANSYS and analytical modal analysis is performed to generate modal parameters. The analytical results were compared with experimental results. A good agreement was achieved between the finite element and analysis and field test results. It is further demonstrated that the numerical and experimental modal analysis provide a comprehensive study on the dynamic properties of the jacket platform. According to the analysis results, the modal parameters identification under ambient excitation can calibrate finite element model of the jacket platform structures, or can be used for the structural health monitoring system.

In this paper, by modeling the Multilayer-Multiconductor Transmission Line(MMTL) with the characteristic parameters-effective dielectric constant, eigen modal voltages, characteristic impedances at each mode, pulse propagation characteristics of MMTL network are simulated. Transmission line modelling is performed in frequency domain, then time domain resposes are obtained by transforming the frequency domain response using fast Fourier transform.

Complex modal testing is employed for the in-situ parameter identification of a four-axis active magnetic bearing system while the system is in operation. In the test, magnetic bearings are used as exciters as well as actuators for feedback control. The experimental results show that the directional frequency response function, which is properly defined in the complex domain, is a powerful tool for identification of bearing as well as modal parameters. It is also shown that the position and current stiffnesses can be accurately estimated using the relations between the measured forces, displacements, and currents.

Coupling adjacent steel frame using elastic dampers for control of response to low and moderate dynamic event is investigated in this paper. The complex modal superposition method is first used to determine dynamic characteristic, mainly modal damping ratio and modal frequency, of damper linked linear adjacent steel frame for fractical use. Dynamic response of steel frame linked by hydraulic-excitation method. This combined method can efectively and accurately determine dynamic response of non-clasically damped systems in the frequency domain. Parametric studties are finally performed to identify optimal parameters of elastic dampers for achieving the maximum modal damping ratio or the maximum response reduction of steel frame. It is demonstrated that using discrete elasatic dampers of proper parameters to link steel frame can reduce dynamic response significantly.
This paper summarizes a study for the modal analysis and model updating conducted using the monitoring data obtained from the Canton Tower of 610 m tall, which was established as an international benchmark problem by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Modal properties of the tower were successfully identified using frequency domain decomposition and stochastic subspace identification methods. Finite element model updating using the measurement data was further performed to reduce the modal property differences between the measurements and those of the finite element model. Over-fitting during the model updating was avoided by using an optimization scheme with a regularization term.

When modal tests on the large structures and machinery are performed, it is in general difficult and inaccurate to use artificial excitation devices such as impact hammers, because of insufficient capacity of the device and different environmental conditions of the concerned structures. Therefore, the Operational Modal Analysis(OMA) technique, which is performed by measuring only vibration responses during the operation of the objective product, can be one alternative. In this paper, the way to identify natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios of a ship by using the OMA during the sea trail is described.
