The modal characteristics of rotating structures vary with the rotating speed. The material and the geometric properties of the structures as well as the rotating speed influence the variations of their modal characteristics. Very often, the modal characteristics of rotating structures need to be specified at some rotating speeds to meet their design requirements. In this paper, rotating cantilever beam is chosen as a design target structure. Optimization problems are formulated and solved to find the optimal shapes of rotating beams with rectangular cross section.
Tanks are used extensively in many engineering areas for spent fuel pool structures at nuclear power plants or for water storage tanks in bulk carriers. To ensure the structural integrity of such tanks when under dynamic loads, modal characteristics such as natural frequencies, participation factors and mode shapes should be known. Investigated in this study are the modal characteristics of a square tank by the finite element method. This approach can be used with subsequent dynamic analyses such as a response spectrum analysis or a harmonic analysis. Finite element models are prepared to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes, which are easy to find the modal characteristics of a fluid-filled square tank. The effects of the fluid contained in the tank and the boundary conditions at top and bottom ends on the modal characteristics are assessed by several finite element analyses.
In this paper, the three-dimensional finite element model is established to investigate the structural dynamic characteristics of rotor blade using a finite element analysis. Six natural frequencies and mode shapes are calculated by computer simulation. The first three flapping modal frequencies, the first two lead-lag modal frequencies, and the first feathering modal frequency are validated through comparison with the modal test results of the fixed rotor blade. The computer simulation results are found in good agreement with experimentally measured natural frequencies. The important results are obtained as follows: (1) Natural frequencies are changed due to the variation of rotational speed and fiber angle of rotor blade, (2) Weak coupling between flapping mode shape and lead-lag mode shape are detected, (3) Centrifugal force has more effect on flapping modal frequency than lead-lag modal frequency.
The modal identification of large civil structures such as bridges under the ambient vibrational conditions has been widely investigated during the past decade. Many operational modal analysis methods have been proposed and successfully used for identifying the dynamic characteristics of the constructed bridges in service. However, there is very limited research available on reliable criteria for the robustness of these identified modal parameters of the bridge structures. In this study, two time-domain operational modal analysis methods, the data-driven stochastic subspace identification (SSI-DATA) method and the covariance-driven stochastic subspace identification (SSI-COV) method, are employed to identify the modal parameters from field recorded ambient acceleration data. On the basis of the SSI-DATA method, the modal contribution indexes of all identified modes to the measured acceleration data are computed by using the Kalman filter, and their applicability to evaluate the robustness of identified modes is also investigated. Here, the benchmark problem, developed by Hong Kong Polytechnic University with field acceleration measurements under different excitation conditions of a cable-stayed bridge, is adopted to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results from the benchmark study show that the robustness of identified modes can be judged by using their modal contributions to the measured vibration data. A critical value of modal contribution index of 2% for a reliable identifiability of modal parameters is roughly suggested for the benchmark problem.

A benchmark problem for modal identification of a cable-stayed bridge was proposed by a research team at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. By taking an instrumented cable-stayed bridge as a test bed, nineteen sets of vibration records with known/unknown excitations were provided to invited researchers. In this paper, the vibration responses of the bridge under a series of excitation conditions are examined to estimate the wind and traffic-induced variations of its dynamic characteristics. Firstly, two output-only experimental modal identification methods are selected. Secondly, the bridge and its monitoring system are described and the nineteen sets of vibration records are analyzed in time-domain and frequency-domain. Excitations sources of blind datasets are predicted based on the analysis of excitation conditions of known datasets. Thirdly, modal parameters are extracted by using the two selected output-only modal identification methods. The identified modal parameters are examined with respect to at least two different conditions such as traffic- and typhoon-induced loadings. Finally, the typhoon-induced effects on dynamic characteristics of the bridge are estimated by analyzing the relationship between the wind velocity and the modal parameters.
An experimental modal analysis is the process to identify structure's dynamic characteristics such as resonant frequencies, damping values and mode shapes. An experimental model was made of stainless steel in the shape of a circular cylindrical shell and installed on the test bed with jigs. For investigating vibrational characteristics of the continuous circular cylindrical shell with intermediate supports, modal testing is performed by using impact hammer, accelerometer and 8-channel FFT analyzer. The frequency response function(FRF) measurements are also made on the experimental model within the frequency range from 0 to 4kHz. Modal parameters are identified from resonant peaks in the FRF's and animated deformation patterns associated with each of the resonances are shown on a computer screen. The experimental results are compared with analytical and FEA results.

This study determines the water length effects on the modal behavior of a prototype arch dam using Operational and Analytical Modal Analyses. Achievement of this purpose involves construction of a prototype arch dam-reservoir-foundation model under laboratory conditions. In the model, reservoir length was taken to be as much as three times the dam height. To determine the experimental dynamic characteristics of the arch dam using Operational Modal Analysis, ambient vibration tests were implemented for empty reservoir and three different reservoir water lengths. In the ambient vibration tests, the dam was vibrated by natural excitations provided from small impact effects and the response signals were measured using sensitive accelerometers. Operational Modal Analysis software process signals collected from the ambient vibration tests, and Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition and Stochastic Subspace Identification techniques estimated modal parameters of the dams. To validate the experimental results, 3D finite element model of the prototype arch dam was modeled by ANSYS software for empty reservoir and three different reservoir water lengths, and dynamic characteristics of each model were determined analytically. At the end of the study, experimentally and analytically identified dynamic characteristics compared to each other. Also, changes on the natural frequencies along to water length are plotted as graphs. Results suggest that reservoir water complicates the modal behavior of the arch dam significantly.
When structures undergo rotating motion, their modal characteristics often vary significantly. The variations of modal characteristics are determined from their geometric shapes and their rotating angular speed. Since the modal characteristics vary during the operation of the structures, they should be carefully scrutinized. In this paper, rotating cantilever beams are chosen as design targets which need to meet some specific design requirements. The thickness and the width of the rotating beams are assumed as multi-stage spline functions and the stage values for the thickness and the width are used as design variables for the optimization problems.

This paper presents an experimental modal analysis of a caisson-type breakwater to produce basic information for the structural health assessment of a caisson structure. To achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented. First, modal analysis methods are selected to examine the modal characteristics of a caisson structure. Second, experimental modal analyses are performed using finite element analyses and lab-scale model tests. Third, damage scenarios that include several damage levels in a foundation-structure interface are designed. Finally, the effects of damage on the modal characteristics are analyzed for the purpose of utilizing them for damage identification.
