  • Recently, mobile devices have supported wireless LAN as well as bluetooth, where the services such as heterogeneous network access and seamless mobility connection are important. Even though the mobility and physical network might be varied, an efficient communication mechanism for the network access and a robust mobility management of mobile devices are needed. In this paper, we design and implement a Bluetooth system with mobile LAN access capability. The proposed system has the following features; 1) IP connection is enabled by BENP in the link layer, 2) The networks devices of heterogeneous mobile devices are integrated into a single virtual network interface, 3) IP mobility between the bluetooth and wireless LAN is supported by mobile IP. The experimented results show that the packet loss and delay time during the handover duration is reduced by predicting the handover among different networks followed by the setup of any required parameters in advance.

  • Fourth-generation (4G) wireless networks will be the IP-based cellular networks integrating Internet with the existing cellular networks. Two important issues should be concerned in the IP-based cellular networks, IP mobility, and quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees. In this paper, we proposed two mechanisms to solve the problems with IP mobility and RSVP-based QoS provisioning. First, virtual-IP (VIP) allocation scheme in areas with a large rate of handoff can minimize the wireless signaling overhead due to IP mobility. The access routers (ARs) create dynamically the VIP zone by using the measured handoff rate derived from the history of the handoff into neighboring ARs. We show that VIP allocation scheme reduces the binding update messages in the wireless link than hierarchical mobile IPv6. Second, the new advance resource reservation protocol called proportional aggregate RSVP (PA-RSVP) can minimize waste of bandwidth and soft state refresh overhead due to IP mobility. It allocates the bandwidth in advance between the mobility anchor point and neighboring ARs using proportional aggregate reservation. We also show that PA-RSVP provides an improved performance over existing protocols.

  • Vertical handoff is a new type of handoff in wireless networks. It is issued when a mobile node moves over overlapping wireless networks with each proving a different access bandwidth, transmission latency, and coverage. By issuing the vertical handoff, the mobile node can obtain better network bandwidth. In the sense of TCP throughput, however, the vertical handoff does not always produce positive performance gain, so sometimes it is better for the mobile node to stay at lower bandwidth providing network rather than to select and move to higher bandwidth providing network. In this paper, we analyze TCP throughput for vertical handoff, and propose a new handoff decision scheme which can estimate TCP throughput at the moment of vertical handoff. Based on the estimation, a mobile node can decide to issue vertical handoff to produce better TCP throughput, and we verify the results by simulations.

  • The performance of mobile devices and wireless networks is improved rapidly and Mobility management skills such as Mobile IP and ad-hoc technology were developed. So the requirement of processing the distributed computing is highly increased in any place and any time or in the state of movement. Therefore we studied the mobile grid system to process the distributed applications properly in wireless networks. In addition to typical computational resources, Mobile Grid brings new resources such as sensor, mobile devices or other wireless devices to distributed computing for the purpose of resource-sharing. In this paper, we design and implement the mobile grid system in wireless lan network environment for the providing the grid service. Also, we evaluate the performance of mobile grid system using the processing the distributed applications in implemented mobile grid environments.

  • There can exist unidirectional links due to asymmetric property of mobile terminals or current wireless environments on practical mobile ad hoc networks. However, at present, the existing mobile ad hoc routing protocols are implemented to support only bidirectional links. Thus, in this paper, we extend the existing dynamic source routing protocol in order to implement a new routing protocol, which is fit to mobile ad hoc networks containing unidirectional links. For performance evaluation, we use combinations of mobility scenario files and connection pattern files from Carnegimelon Univ. We consider received data rate and average route discovery time as evaluation items, which are compared and evaluated for three suggested route discovery methods.

  • WSNs is evolving different kinds of networks depending on different circumstances, among those we have HWSNs (Hybrid Wireless Sensor Networks) which invokes sensor nodes mobility. In hybrid wireless sensor networks (HWSNs), reducing energy consumption of resource constrained and adaptability to the sensors nodes motion are the crucial problems; to overcome this we need a scalable MAC protocol. Many MAC protocols have been proposed by different researchers, but in this paper we propose LMAC because it outperforms S-MAC, T-MAC and D-MAC protocols comparing to its improvement of energy efficiency and mobile adaptability.

Abstract As interest in wireless hand-held terminals and in personal communications services increases recently, there have been broad studies on the ways to support multimedia applications provided in wired networks such as B-ISDN (Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network) in wireless networks. However, since many studies have focused on Quality of Service (QoS) Provisioning in wired networks to provide multimedia applications, new methods of QoS Provisioning are needed in wireless networks to resolve the problem of wireless channel fading and the difficulty of mobility occurred in wireless networks. This paper proposes three schemes of QoS Provisioning in wireless networks which will make continuous QoS guarantee and efficient use of limited wireless resources possible. The first scheme reserves bandwidth in proportion to the amount of real-time traffic in the neighbor cells to decrease the handoff dropping rate of delay sensitive real-time connections, adapting reserved bandwidth for efficient resource utilization. The second scheme is predictive bandwidth reservation scheme that utilizes the past handoff information. It can decrease overheads required to adapt bandwidth reservation. The last scheme is priority-based call admission control prioritizing traffic type (real-time traffic/ non-real-time traffic), connection type (new connection /handoff connection), and mobile terminal speed (fast mobile/slow mobile). Simulation results show that the proposed QoS Provisioning schemes improve the total system performance by achieving three goals - required QoS guarantee, higher bandwidth utilization and less overhead.

  • The deployment of geographically distributed wireless sensors has greatly elevated the capability of monitoring structural health in social-overhead capital (SOC) public infrastructures. This paper deals with the utilization of a distributed mobility management (DMM) approach for the deployment of wireless sensing devices in a structural health monitoring system (SHM). Then, a wireless sensing mechanism utilizing low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH)-based clustering algorithm for smart sensors has been analyzed to support the seamless data transmission of structural health information which is essentially important to guarantee public safety. The clustering of smart sensors will be able to provide real-time monitoring of structural health and a filtering algorithm to boost the transmission of critical information over heterogeneous wireless and mobile networks.

  • As a result of the prevalence of smartphone, various mobile services became faster by LTE networks. Because many mobile devices are used more wireless services, heavy signaling traffic for authentication could be generated. Authentication is an important factor in wireless networks to identify devices; it is the start of wireless networks. This paper analyzes previous patterns for more effective authentication in accessing of another external networks. We propose a fast authentication scheme for minimizing of signaling cost between the authentication server and external networks. And we calculate the rate of authentication occurrence in LTE networks using mathematical modeling as well as the change of signaling cost for authentication in various network environments. Finally, we calculate the optimized number of authentication data and show the effectiveness for authentication signaling costs.

  • Restricted by finite battery energy, traditional wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can only maintain for a limited period of time, resulting in serious performance bottleneck in long-term deployment of WSN. Fortunately, the advancement in the wireless energy transfer technology provides a potential to free WSNs from limited energy supply and remain perpetual operational. A mobile charger called wireless charging vehicle (WCV) is employed to periodically charge each sensor node and keep its energy level above the minimum threshold. Aiming at maximizing the ratio of the WCV's vocation time over the cycle time as well as guaranteeing the perpetual operation of networks, we propose a feasible and optimal solution to this issue within the context of a real-time large-scale deployed WSN. First, we develop two different types of charging cycles: initialization cycles and renewable cycles and give relevant algorithms to construct these two cycles for each sensor node. We then formulate the optimization problem into an optimal construction algorithm and prove its correctness through theoretical analysis. Finally, we conduct extensive simulations to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms.
