Study on Mobile Terminal Distribution Act: Effects of Subsidy Regulations (단말기 유통법에 관한 연구: 보조금 규제의 영향)

  • Purpose - This paper analyzes the effect of the handset subsidy and the Mobile Number Portability subscriber subsidy regulation, which are the main regulation adopted in "Law on the Improvement of the Mobile Terminal Distribution System" (Mobile Terminal Distribution Act), on the social surplus, the consumer surplus and profits of telecommunications carriers. We focus our analysis on whether the service charge competition is stimulated enough so that it can compensate for the loss of subsidies. Research design, data, and methodology - We use simple economic model to assess the impact of the handset subsidy and the Mobile Number Portability subscriber subsidy regulation. Unlike the former researches on this topic, we depart from using Hotelling model, and instead use the switching cost model, which uses switching cost as a parameter of market powers of telecommunications carriers. We also study the effect of the two different regulations when they are adopted both independently and concurrently. Results - If the market powers of telecommunications carriers are over certain threshold, contrary to the regulatory agency's assertion, the service charge competition would not be stimulated enough to compensate for the deduction in the subsidies, and thus the consumer surplus is compromised. Number Portability subsidy, especially, undermines the rival's market power and thus reduces the service charge. On the other hand, the regulations will also increase the profits of telecommunications carriers. However, social surplus is maximized when both of the regulations are present because the regulations reduces the frequency of switching handsets inefficiently. Conclusions - In enacting the Mobile Terminal Distribution Act, the telecommunications regulatory agency asserted that the regulation on subsidies will stimulate service charge competition, and in the long run, enhance the consumer surplus. However, contrary to the regulatory agency's assertion, subsidy regulation, especially the regulation on Number Portability subsidy, reduces consumer surplus. On the other hand, the Mobile Terminal Distribution Act can also increase the profits of telecommunications carriers because it decreases competition among the telecommunications carriers. However, the Mobile Terminal Distribution Act can increase the social surplus because it reduces inefficient switching of handsets.

  • The number of mobile telecommunication service subscribers has been over 50 millions as of the end of Nov. 2010. And the number of used mobile phones has been growing continuously caused by shortened life cycle of products and competing between service providers, which is about 21 millions for only one year, 2010 in Korea. However, the quality level of reverse logistics network for used mobile phones is very low and statistics show that the collection ratio of them has not been over 40%. The current low collection ratio can be one of the significant causes of environment destruction due to the cumulated growth. Accordingly new practical alternative recovery systems are required in addition to the current one with EPR(Extended Producers Responsibility). In this paper, suggested are alternative policies to improve the quality level of reverse logistics network for used mobile phones effectively. ENR(Extended Network service providers Responsibility) is representative of them.

  • The purposes of this study were to explain consumer attitude, expenses and satisfaction of mobile-phone Users. The data of this study used from Pollever.com. This study was satisfaction of mobile-phone users in Korea. The users were consumers of Samsung, LG, SK-Telecom and Pantack. The critical success factor was on the subside for mobile-phone in the growth of mobile service, which we can analyze in its positive effects. Fifty percent of consumers were unsatisfaction with local companies without Samsung. Now most of local mobile-companies will developed music-phone, high-tec camera-phone, hi-slim phone, and health-phone. But, the results of this study are as fallow: Most of consumer' main issues were design, weight, and brand power. It was in that it played the driving force to upgrade the local mobile-phone services into international level with the explosive growth in business by providing cheap phones.

  • The content of this paper is concerned with the pricing decision model when the new telecommunication service enter into market. The pricing decision model of firm level is based on the problems of the previous service pricing model that are abstracted from the literature survey. We suggest a new pricing model and prove the model's fitness using the way of empirical simulation study. We empirically apply the proposed model to obtain the price level of such a new service as the convergence service between mobile communication service and broadcasting service. finally, we prove that the proposed model is successful because we get the new . service price based on the pricing decision model suggested in this paper.

  • 스마트 단말에 장착된 센서들로부터 단말의 상황 정보를 수집하고 분석하여, 상황에 적절한 동영상을 단말에게 스트리밍해 주는 서비스 구조를 제안한다. 스마트 단말은 NFC 또는 QR 코드 기반으로 전시물이나 특정 사물에 기등록된 동영상 정보를 획득하고, 저밀도 기반 WiFi 무선 실내 측위 기술을 사용하여 단말이 위치한 실내 공간 정보를 서버에 제공한다. 상황인지형 스트리밍 서버는 단말이 요청한 정보를 토대로 단말의 해상도에 적절한 동영상을 스트리밍 한다. 설계된 상황인지형 비디오 스트리밍 서비스 구조는 전시와 컨벤션, 대형 기관 및 테마파크의 안내 및 홍보 등의 용도로 활용될 수 있다.

Mobile Art Park Guidance Application using Mobile MAP Open API

  • In this paper, we develop a mobile MAP open API using HTML5 local storage and the W3C geolocation API. The mobile MAP open API consists of the basic JavaScript MAP API, offline navigation API, and multimedia POI (mPOI) API. The basic JavaScript MAP API creates a map and controls, rotates, and overlays data on the map. The offline navigation API is developed using HTML5 local storage and web storage. The mobile web application downloads and stores mPOIs of works of art to local storage or web storage from a web server. The mPOI API is developed using HTML5 video and audio APIs. We develop a mobile art park guidance application using the developed mobile MAP open API.

A study on Influencing relationship between loyalty program's perceived value and service loyalty in mobile telecommunication service market (이동통신 서비스 시장에서 로열티 프로그램의 지각된 가치와 서비스 충성도 간의 영향관계)

  • This study strives to identify effects of the relationship between the loyalty program and service loyalty through focusing on the role of the loyalty program which is used as a means of promotion in relationship marketing. According to the result of the empirical testing, the higher the economical usefulness and psychological usefulness (the perceived value of the loyalty program) are, the higher the customer satisfaction rate was. Also, the higher the satisfaction of the loyalty program, the more credibility increased. Furthermore, the higher credibility was the more positive the influencing relationship with a heightened level of commitment was found to be. It was discovered that different factors such as customer satisfaction, customer trust, customer commitment in the loyalty program have a positive influence on service loyalty. Loyalty program satisfaction, along with loyalty program credibility and commitment indirectly affected service loyalty.

  • The customer retention is one of major goals for telecommunication service providers as MNP(Mobile Number Portability) would be enforced soon. The purpose of this study is to construct a customer retention model by (1) extracting the statistically significant determinants that influence on the Out-bounding churn and In-bounding churn separately and (2) ranking the importance of sub-factors to minimize Out-bounding churn and to satisfy In-bounding churn. This model applies to domestic wireless telecommunication service providers and customer retention strategies are suggested based on the result.

Empirical Study on Unit Bias under the Flat Rate Pricing in the Korean Mobile Telecommunication Market (이동통신시장에서의 단위편향 소비행태 발생에 관한 실증연구)

  • The purpose of this paper is to empirically identify whether unit bias exists or not under the flat rate pricing in the Korean mobile telecommunication market and to give the desirable form of pricing plans for minimizing this irrational behaviors. Our results show that with the flat rate pricing consumers tends to make more voice or data traffic over their optimal consumption level, meaning the existence of unit bias in the Korean mobile market. These results imply that under the current pricing plans subscribers may pay higher monthly fee than their optimal cost which maximizes their utility, for using the telecommunications service. Thus, policy makers need to consider adopting mobile operators' segmentation of the flat rate pricing plans for the reduction of subscribers' telecommunications costs and the improvement of consumer welfare.
