  • This paper considers the effect of co-channel interference on hybrid satellite-terrestrial relay network. In particular, we investigate the problem of amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying in hybrid satellite-terrestrial link, where the relay is interfered by multiple co-channel interferers. The direct link between satellite and terrestrial destination is not available due to masking by surroundings. The destination node can only receive signals from satellite with the assistance of a relay node situated at ground. The satellite-relay link is assumed to follow the shadowed Rice fading, while the channels of interferer-relay and relay-destination links experience Nakagami-m fading. For the considered AF relaying scheme, we first derive the analytical expression for the moment generating function (MGF) of the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). Then, we use the obtained MGF to derive the average symbol error rate (SER) of the considered scenario for M-ary phase shift keying (M-PSK) constellation under these generalized fading channels.

  • Relay-assisted multiple input technique has become a promising candidate for next generation broadband wireless communications. In this paper, we propose channel selective relay-based multiple input transmission system. In the proposed system, single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) are adopted for uplink and downlink transmissions, respectively. The performance of relay-based system can be improved by using the subcarriers selectively based on the channel condition between relay station (RS) and mobile station, or between RS and base station. Simulation results show that the proposed relay-based system considerably outperforms the conventional relay-based system.

  • In this paper, the effect of a Doppler Spread caused by a mobile station (MS) is analyzed for transparent mobile multi-hop relays (MMR) systems based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The exact expression of interchannel interference (ICI) power and the upper bounds of ICI power are derived for OFDM systems with cooperative MMR or non-coopeartive throughput enhancement (TE) MMR. Also, the exact signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) and its lower bound as well as ICI power and its upper bound, derived in this paper, are evaluated by computer simulation with the OFDM parameter set used for mobile WiMax (WiBro) systems.

  • Wireless Relaying is a promising solutions to overcome the channel impairments and provides high data rate coverage that appear for beyond 3G mobile communications. In this paper we present end to end BER performance of dual hop wireless communication systems equipped with multiple Decode and Forward relays over Rayleigh fading channel with the best relay selection. We compare the BER performance of the best relay with the BER performance of single relay. We select the best relay based on the end to end channel conditions. We further calculate the outage probability of the best relay. It is shown that the outage probability of the best relay is equivalent to the outage probability when all relays take part in the transmission. We apply Orthogonal Space Time Block coding(OSTBC) at the source terminal. Numerical and simulation results are presented to verify our analysis.

  • It is easy to install and maintain a mobile multi-hop wireless network due to its self-organizing characteristics. However it has security weakness of the authentication of mobile multi-hop relay stations. Specially, the mobile multi-hop relay network in the IEEE 802.16j has the additional security weakness caused by the requirement of backward compatibility for mobile stations of the conventional IEEE 802.16 system. In this paper, we propose a novel mutual authentication scheme applicable to IEEE 802.16j-based mobile multi-hop relay network architecture. The scheme is able to resolve the initial trust gain problem of a multi-hop node at its entry to the network, the problem of rogue mobile multi-hop node and the problem of hop-by-hop authentication between multi-hop nodes. Effectively, the scheme is a hybrid scheme of the distributed authentication method and the centralized authentication method which have been considered to be deployed in the wireless ad-hoc network and the wireless network connected to wired authentication servers, respectively. Also, we analyze the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid authentication method.

  • We observe simultaneous transmission of relay stations (RSs) allowed in current IEEE 802.16j draft standard for multi-hop relay networks may involve severe interference among the RSs, hence leading to throughput degradation. Allowing only 1/3 of the RSs to simultaneously transmit instead of 1/2 RSs as in the current draft standard reduces the interference but results in reduced throughput. To remedy this problem, we devise schemes to incorporate network coding at link-layer level (decode-and-forward) into the simultaneous transmission of RSs. Data movement is rearranged to maximize coding gain. Formula is derived to dictate exact movement of packets traveling between base station (BS) and mobile stations (MSs) via intermediate RSs. The frame structure in the current IEEE 802.16j draft standard does not allow broadcast needed for network coding. We devise a new frame structure which supports the broadcast. A new R-MAP (pointers to the burst data) is introduced to implement the broadcast. Since our new frame structure is used only for BS to RS or RS to RS communication, our schemes retain backward compatibility with legacy MSs based on IEEE 802.16e standard. Simulation based on simple configuration of RSs shows considerable improvement in terms of system throughput and round trip delay. For a 4-hop relay network with 1 BS and 4 RSs with symmetric traffic in uplink (UL) and downlink (DL), throughput is improved by 49% in DL and by 84% in UL traffic compared with IEEE 802.16j draft standard under the assumption that omni-directional antennae are used in BS and RSs.

  • As the number of mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets explodes, the need for new services or applications is also rapidly increasing. Smart class application is one of the emerging applications, in which most of contents are distributed to all members of a class simultaneously. It is highly required to select relay nodes to cover shadow area of radio as well as extend coverage, but existing algorithms in a smart class environment suffer from high control packet overhead and delay for exchanging topology information among all pairs of nodes to select relay nodes. In addition, the relay selection procedure should be repeated in order to adapt to the dynamic topology changes caused by link status changes or device's movement. This paper proposes the learning based relay selection algorithm to overcome aforementioned problems. The key idea is that every node keeps track of its relay quality in a fully distributed manner, where RQI (Relay Quality Indicator) is newly defined to measure both the ability of receiving packets from content source and the ability of successfully relaying them to successors. The RQI of each node is updated whenever it receives or relays broadcast packet, and the node having the higher RQI is selected as a relay node in a distributed and run-time manner. Thus, the proposed algorithm not only removes the overhead for obtaining prior knowledge to select relay nodes, but also provides the adaptability to the dynamic topology changes. The network simulation and experimental results prove that the proposed algorithm provides efficient and reliable content distribution to all members in a smart class as well adaptability against network dynamics.

  • This paper describes problems when visited ISP subscriber gets dynamic IP address in home ISP for wireless internet service on GPRS network. We propose a specific DHCP relay for wireless internet service of visited ISP subscriber on GPRS network. We designed and implemented the specific DHCP relay and installed it in ISP testbed. We show the allocated dynamic IP address using specific DHCP relay for visited ISP subscriber on GPRS network. Now we think it is possible the visited ISP subscriber can access wireless internet service on GPRS network using specific DHCP relay, and UMTS system can be managed IP address for subscriber roaming.

  • Multihop relay-based cellular networks are attracting much interest because of their throughput enhancement, coverage extension, and low infrastructure cost. In these networks, relay stations (RSs) between a base station (BS) and mobile stations (MSs) drastically increase the overall spectral efficiency, with improved channel quality for MSs located at the cell edge or in shadow areas, and enhanced throughput of MSs in hot spots. These relay-based networks require an advanced radio resource management scheme because the optimal amount of radio resource for a BS-to-RS link should be allocated according to the MS channel quality and distribution, considering the interference among RSs and neighbor BSs. In this paper, we propose optimal resource planning algorithms that maximize the overall utility of relay-based networks under a proportional fair scheduling policy. In the first phase, we determine an optimal scheduling policy for distributing BS-to-RS link resources to RSs. In the second phase, we determine the optimal amount of the BS-to-RS link resources using the results of the first phase. The proposed algorithms efficiently calculate the optimal amount of resource without exhaustive searches, and their accuracy is verified by comparison with simulation results, in which the algorithms show a perfect match with simulations.

  • When IoT sensor nodes are deployed in areas where data collection is challenging, sensors must be relocated if sensing holes occur due to improper placement of sensors or energy depletion, and data collection is impossible. The sensing hole's cluster header transmits a request message for sensor relocation to an adjacent cluster header through a specific relay node. However, since a specific relay node is frequently used, a member sensor located in a specific cluster area adjacent to the sensing hole can continuously receive the movement message. In this paper, we propose a method that avoids the situation in which the sensing hole cluster header monopolizes a specific relay node and allows the cluster header to use multiple relay nodes fairly. Unlike the existing method in which the relay node immediately responds to the request of the header, the method proposed in this paper solves a ping-pong problem and a problem that the request message is concentrated on a specific relay node by applying a method of responding to the request of the header using a timer. OMNeT++ simulator was used to analyze the performance of the proposed method.
