  • This paper describes an implementation method and the results of numerical mobile phone models representing real phone models that have been released on the Korean market since 2002. The aim is to estimate the electromagnetic absorption in the human brain for case-control studies to investigate health risks related to mobile phone use. Specific absorption rate (SAR) compliance test reports about commercial phone models were collected and classified in terms of elements such as the external body shape, the antenna, and the frequency band. The design criteria of a numerical phone model representing each type of phone group are as follows. The outer dimensions of the phone body are equal to the average dimensions of all commercial models with the same shape. The distance and direction of the maximum SAR from the earpiece and the area above -3 dB of the maximum SAR are fitted to achieve the average obtained by measuring the SAR distributions of the corresponding commercial models in a flat phantom. Spatial peak 1-g SAR values in the cheek and tilt positions against the specific anthropomorphic mannequin phantom agree with average data on all of the same type of commercial models. Second criterion was applied to only a few types of models because not many commercial models were available. The results show that, with the exception of one model, the implemented numerical phone models meet criteria within 30%.

  • In this paper, PIFA(Planar Inverted F Antenna) which operates in PCS(Personal Communication System) band is designed and characteristics are investigated. Designed PIFA was installed in three types of handsets, folder, bar, slide, and the performance was evaluated. Head and hand phantom were added to make the most similar environment to real condition of mobile phone use, and influences on antenna performance were analyzed. The simulation results confirm radiation patterns are greatly changed and antenna efficiency is decreased by the effect of human body. Performance variation of the mobile handset antenna was observed as changing the angle between mobile handset and head phantom from $0^{\circ}$ to $2^{\circ},\;4^{\circ}$ to confirm the variation caused by the relative position of mobile handset and head phantom. Directivity was decreased gradually as the antenna goes away from head phantom, and showed the trend of increasing efficiency. But in the case of bar type, where the position of antenna is relatively close to head phantom, that trend didn't show. It was confirmed that the shape of handset has a great effect on the performance.

  • In this study, we adopt the strength variation (equation omitted) of electromagnetic waves by their distance. The location of antenna emitting electromagnetic waves is moved to its opposite side and the distance between human body and antenna is secured more. Therefore, the cellular phone designed in this study can reduce the impact of electromagnetic waves absorbed in local part of human body (in particular, head) and then can have competitiveness in the world market facing the regulations.

  • This study had been aimed to conduct the camera calibration on VLBI antenna in the Space Geodetic Observation Center of Sejong City with a low-cost digital camera, which embedded in a mobile phone to determine the three-dimension position coordinates of the VLBI antenna, based on stereo images. The initial values for the camera calibration have been obtained by utilizing the Direct Linear Transformation algorithm and the commercial digital photogrammetry system, PhotoModeler $Scanner^{(R)}$ ver. 6.0, respectively. The accuracy of camera calibration results was compared with that the camera calibration results, acquired by a bundle adjustment with nonlinear collinearity condition equation. Although two methods showed significant differences in the initial value, the final calibration demonstrated the consistent results whichever methods had been performed for obtaining the initial value. Furthermore, those three-dimensional coordinates of feature points of the VLBI antenna were respectively calculated using the camera calibration by the two methods to be compared with the reference coordinates obtained from a total station. In fact, both methods have resulted out a same standard deviation of $X=0.004{\pm}0.010m$, $Y=0.001{\pm}0.015m$, $Z=0.009{\pm}0.017m$, that of showing a high degree of accuracy in centimeters. From the result, we can conclude that a mobile phone camera opens up the way for a variety of image processing studies, such as 3D reconstruction from images captured.

  • We propose the row method that is able to consider the SAR compliance test from the very beginning step of developing the mobile phone. The reason this new method is plausible is that we adopt the certified FDTD for the reliability of calculation, utilizing 1 mm high resolution model that is to model the phantom and the mobile phone almost identically to the reality. In this paper we introduce the process that will apply the proposed method in order to reduce the SAR of the mobile phone that has been problematic in satisfying the SAR compliance test. It results in dropping in the SAR that we keep the mobile phone or its antenna while we use it. Therefore here we make a claim as fellows. When we develop the new mobile phone, we should use the computer simulation combining the CAD design and radiation pattern rather than make a prototype and then use the trial and error method. Moreover the former way leads us to boost up the developing efficiency and reduce the cost.

  • In this papers, we study the characteristics of dual band PIFA(Planar Inverted F antenna) for handy phones using H-type silt in the antenna radiators. Slit types on the antenna radiator vary resonance mechanism of the antenna and affect reactance component of impedance for the antenna. Therefore the antennas resonate at the dual band(cellular -band, Korea-PCS band), the bandwidth, input impedance and radiation patterns of the proposed antenna is affected by the silt length on the radiators. In order to demonstrate the validity of the proposed theory, it is implementation the antenna of the 4 types. From results for the experiment of the implementation antenna, -5 dB bandwidth of return loss is content with the allocated bandwidth of Cellular and Korea-PCS system the gains of the antenna is about -8$\~$ - 1 dB, the radiation patterns for x-polarized or y-polarized are omnidirectional pattern. From above the results of this papers, it is conclude mobile phones antenna for handy phones using this papers results.

  • The novel internal monopole chip antenna of penta-band operation for GSM850/GSM900/DCS/USPCS/WCDMA bands for mobile phones is proposed. This antenna occupies a small volume $8\times3.2\times20mm^3$ and is suitable to be embedded in a mobile phone as an internal antenna. The minimization of the proposed antenna was realized by using spiral line structure and meander line structure on FR-4 of dielectric$(\varepsilon_r=4.4)$. The designed antenna has the wide-band operation in the upper band by overlapping high order resonances. The measured bandwidth of this antenna (VSWR>3) is 150MHz$(1,030\sim1,180\;MHz)$ in the lower band operation and 650 MHz$(1,760\sim2,410\;MHz)$ in higher band operation. The measured radiation efficiency within bandwidth(VSWR 3:1) is over 50 %. The antenna has been designed by a commercial software HFSS.

  • It is shown that inverted ${\pi}$ feeder affects the gain improvement for the internal antenna of mobile phone. Generation of current on the inverted ${\pi}$ feeder, by the modification of conventional feeding structure for the PIFA and IFA, can apply T matching theory to the new feeder. Therefore, inverted ${\pi}$ feeder based on the T matching theory makes higher radiation resistance, and also increases the gain. To verify inverted ${\pi}$ feeding effect, feeder is applied to GSM/DCS dual band conventional PIFA, and measured return loss and patterns. By measurement, it's shown that this new feeding antenna has $0.23{\sim}0.84$ dB higher average gain for GSM band and $0.01{\sim}1.74$ dB higher average gain for DCS band than conventional fed PIFA without resonant frequency change.

  • This paper analyzes the correlations between the impedance matching of the antenna and the radiation characteristics of the mobile handset body. Using two kinds of mobile handset which has retractable and fixed antenna the impedance and radiation pattern is measured under totally 16 conditions. By measured results, it has been identified that the radiation energy into human head can be reduced by attaining the better impedance matching when the radiation pattern out of the mobile handset is like the ideal monopole antenna.

  • Many novel designs of planar antennas for related applications such as internal mobile phone antennas, base station antennas, WLAN or Bluetooth antennas, and so on, have been reported very recently, especially since the year 2000. In this thesis, Dualband internal antenna for GSM/DSC handset is proposed. The antenna has a size of about 38mm$\times$90mm$\times$1mm, giving a total mobile phone PCB for support and fold type Patch of about 30mm$\times$8mm$\times$3.2mm. This antenna characteristic facilitates the fine-tuning of the two operating frequencies of 909MHz and 1762MHz in this dualband design. The measured radiation pattern in the E-plane and H-plane for operating frequencies of 909MHz and 1762MHz is compared and analyzed. The designed and fabricated two band internal antenna for GSM/DSC handset have a gain between 0dBi and 2.0dBi at all bands.
