  • The role of social networking mobile applications such as WhatsApp in enhancing second language vocabulary learning among English language learners continues to be a subject of interest for many scholars. The current study aimed at examining medical English vocabulary learning among undergraduate students using WhatsApp compared to learning vocabulary via the Blackboard platform during the Covid-19 pandemic. To this end, 108 medical students (51 males, 57 females) enrolled in a first semester English for a specific English course participated in the study. A quasi-experimental design was adopted for two groups. Fifty-three students participated in the WhatsApp group and 55 students formed the Blackboard group. A pretest-posttest design was employed to collect data. Results of t-test scores did not show a significant difference between the WhatsApp and Blackboard groups on a vocabulary test. Results of a survey that measured students' opinion of the use of WhatsApp as a platform for learning new vocabulary showed positive perceptions since participants thought that WhatsApp enhanced their learning experience.

  • The university museum is working to discover, research, and exhibit cultural artifacts as well as use them as resources of education and academic researches as one of the important organizations of the university. Current, however, university museums have the low-level usability caused by the reduction of financial and administrative supports of the university. One approach to solve this problem may be the design of mobile docent app for improving the accessibility of the museum. The app enables users get artifacts and education programs without the restriction and learn artifact-related knowledge easily. In this paper, we design and implement a new mobile docent app according to the analysis of content of the Chosun university museum as a real case study. In addition, we evaluate the functionality and usability of the proposed app by affordance-based questionnaire.

  • Recently Mobile Software Applications are developed in various languages and stored in App Store. App Users selectively use appropriate apps for the owned hardware. In other words, it depends on the kinds of operating systems of the apps whether to use or not to use the applications in various languages. The apps should be differently implemented according to the kind of the user's device, though they provide the same functions. To solve these problems, it is necessary to define an independent function specification method which is not dependent to a specific system environment. In this paper, the Mobile Application Developing Framework is suggested, which incorporates all of the development process. Standardized models are proposed which can be used in the analysis and design steps. In implementation phase, a technique for cross framework design is suggested so as to implement a platform dependent mobile app.

  • Since only one application has monopoly on LCD device of the mobile device in Android platform, the user can not see two screens together displayed by two applications running simultaneously. In this paper, a dual-app has been defined as two mobile applications running on each device of a pair of two mobile devices and DSAP or Dual Screen Android Platform has been implemented. DSAP does remote-execution of the peer application of a dual-app on the peer mobile device when either application of the dual-app starts to run and supports communication of the pair app over the network. This paper describes details of design and implementation of DSAP and shows a sample case utilizing DSAP.

  • As the distribution rate of a smart phone which can actualize even augmented reality is getting higher, the application scope of a smart phone is sharply increasing. However, in spite of various functions of it, there is still lack of learning app. Mobile equipments can bring no spatial-temporal restriction of learning to a learner, but they can tempt a learner into inappropriate spaces. In this sense, learning app is necessarily needed to motivate and keep learner's inner desire. This thesis suggested considerations when learning mobile app is designed by analyzing motivation strategy of ARCS Theory and UI of web based contents. Also, a design method of mobile learning app was suggested based on a procedural model of mobile learning app adapting ARCS Theory.

  • Recently, information communication technologies such as smartphone or mobile app greatly affect various application fields including geo-spatial domain. And development scheme of mobile web app or hybrid app regards as the most important computing technology which is combined each advantage of mobile app and mobile web. Despite these trends, it is general case that satellite images are used for the background image for other contents services. With this motivation, hybrid app for geo-metadata as the base for dissemination and service is designed and implemented as the prototype, in this study. At the design stage, HTML5, which is the core technology on an international standardization process for hybrid app, is applied. In the implementation, PhoneGap and Sencha Touch as mobile SDK(Software Development Kit) supporting HTML5 on cross-platform in open sources are used. In prototype, some KOMPSAT-2 images covering small area and mandatory elements in geo-metafata standard are tested. As mobile industry applications and business service models based on satellite images on mobile platform are progressing and diversifying, it is expected that this approach and implemented prototype are considered as an important reference.

  • More than 1 billion mobile apps (smartphone applications) have been released worldwide. Competition among developers of apps that are available in app stores has intensified because of increasing demand. App icons with an appealing design can instantly increase attention. Miryoku Engineering methods were used and combined with the Kansei interface model to examine the relationship between attractive icons and users. The evaluation grid method (EGM) is a qualitative method that was used to evaluate the icons, and Quantification Theory Type I is a quantitative method that was used to analyze the influence of design elements in icons. Eight attractive factors of app icons were determined using EGM, and six specific factors were identified using questionnaires. The quantitative results indicated that user cognition and emotion were influenced by the various design elements. The impact on the attractive factors of a single design element differed among users with diverse backgrounds. App icons were assessed on the basis of aesthetics to identify attractive factors and thereby assist designers in understanding and implementing design elements and improving the overall visual appeal of their apps. The result of this investigation is crucial to the presentation of app icons in online app stores.

  • Purpose - Vietnam has the fastest growing digital economy in Southeast Asia and is emerging as a critical overseas market for Korean banks in the post-COVID-19 era. Accordingly, many Korean banks entered the Vietnamese market to overcome the limitations of the saturated domestic financial market and create new revenue sources. This study examined the current status of digital finance in Vietnam and the cases of Korean banks that have succeeded in the Vietnamese market. Then, importance-performance analysis (IPA) was conducted on local customers, managers and staff members of Korean banks in Vietnam. Design/methodology - In this study, we analyzed the importance and satisfaction factors of mobile banking app usage in Vietnam through IPA. In particular, we identified the differences between the two groups by considering the viewpoint of customers who use mobile banking apps and that of managers and staff members who provide mobile banking services. Findings - The IPA results from the customer group and managers and staff members group were generally similar, but differences were observed in Ease of Use (Technology), Innovativeness (Organization), and Increase in Revenue (Economic). In the case of the customer group, Ease of Use (Technology) is located in the second quadrant, which shows low satisfaction compared to high importance. However, in the managers and staff members group, Ease of Use (Technology) is located in the first quadrant, which indicates high importance and high satisfaction. This difference in perception can cause complaints from local customers; thus, it is necessary to change the perception of the technological aspect for ease of use of mobile banking apps in consideration of the customer's position. In addition, it is necessary to allocate the resources invested in the Innovativeness (Organization) and Increase in Revenue (Economic) to Ease of Use (Technology). Originality/value - In this study, based on the HOTE framework, factors for using mobile banking apps were derived, and IPA was conducted targeting local customers (app user) and managers and staff members (app provider) of Korean banks in Vietnam. Through this, we presented the results of empirical analysis that can help Korean banks efficiently utilize limited resources and budgets.
