  • $SF_6$ is the most commonly used insulating gas in electrical systems. But In these days $SF_6$ mixtures and alternative gas has been studied because of global warming. so although many studies have been carried out about binary gas mixtures with $SF_6$, few studies were presented about breakdown characteristics of $SF_6/CF_4$ mixtures. At present study the breakdown characteristics of $SF_6/CF_4$ mixtures in quasi-uniform field was performed. This experiments were carried out under AC voltages. The rod-rod electrode was used with 5 mm gap distance. The mixture of $SF_6/CF_4$ containing 20%,50%,70% of $SF_6$ were compared with pure $SF_6$ and $CF_4$ gas and gas pressure ranged from 0.1 to 0.5 MPa. The show that the breakdown voltages of gas were linearly increased according to the pressure in quasi-uniform field. For breakdown vlotage values of $(E/P)_{crit}$ are important. Because If values of (E/P) is a little more than $(E/P)_{crit}$, electrons rapidly increase and streamer discharge gernerates. Through this experiments values of $(E/P)_{crit}$ are found to vary with the ratio of $SF_6/CF_4$ mixture according to the following relationship. $V_b=(E/P)_{crit}{\cdot}p{\cdot}d$

  • This study is on the separation of Global warming effect gas, CO$_2$by chemical absorption from mixture of CO$_2$-N$_2$which was modeled after flue gas of fire power plant. Investigation of optimum condition for absorbent was carried out by using sparged vessel apparatus. Through packed tower experiments, applicabilities of two absorption models were tested by comparing experimental results with theoretical values. Absorbent used in the experiments was Monoethanolamine (MEA) and gas mixture was made in the mole composition of 15% CO$_2$and 85% N$_2$. Through estimations of CO$_2$loading and CO$_2$removal efficiency, optimum concentration of absorbent was found in the range of 4-5 M. To find a rate of absorption, an enhancement factor was introduced. Values of rate of absorption were calculated by Film model and Higbie model, respectively. Higbie model showed good agreement with experimental results. Therefore, this models is considered to be applicable to the CO$_2$separation process for flue gas from fire power plant.

  • This paper presents two methods for automatic estimation of threshold values in unsupervised change detection of multi-temporal remote sensing images. The proposed methods consist of two analytical steps. The first step is to compute the parameters of a 3-component Gaussian mixture model from difference or ratio images. The second step is to determine a threshold value using Bayesian rule for minimum error. The first method which is an extended version of Bruzzone and Prieto' method (2000) is to apply an Expectation-Maximization algorithm for estimation of the parameters of the Gaussian mixture model. The second method is based on an iterative thresholding algorithm that successively employs thresholding and estimation of the model parameters. The effectiveness and applicability of the methods proposed here were illustrated by two experiments and one case study including the synthetic data sets and KOMPSAT-1 EOC images. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed methods can effectively estimate the model parameters and the threshold value determined shows the minimum overall error.

  • Experiments and numerical analysis have been performed to investigate the effect of preoxidation by oxidizing Zircaloy-4 specimens at a higher temperature after a period of exposure at a lower temperature. The oxidation experiments were performed between $700^{\circ}C$ and 85$0^{\circ}C$ after Preoxidation at $650^{\circ}C$ in a steam and water mixture for 600 seconds and 1,800 seconds. As the thickness of preoxidized layer increased, the oxidation rate of preoxidized specimens at higher temperature became lower than that of as-received claddings. A transition region of oxidation rate exist in the preoxidized specimens, and the region disappeared rapidly as the oxidation temperature increased. This effect appeared more clearly at lower temperatures. According to the results of numerical analysis performed in this study, the growth rate of oxide layer thickness and weight gains were similarly affected by the thickness of preoxidized layer.

  • Polyethylenimine-crosslinked chitin (PEI-chitin) was developed as a biosorbent to effectively remove dyestuffs from dye-containing wastewater. A representative reactive dye, Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) was used as a model dye. The effect of pH, isotherm, kinetic and desorption experiments were performed to evaluate the adsorption/desorption ability of PEI-chitin for RO16. As a result, the maximum adsorption capacity calculated by the Langmuir model was 266.3 mg/g at pH 2, and the time needed for adsorption equilibrium was evaluated to be about 20, 60, and 240 min for 50, 100, and 200 mg/L, respectively. The desorption experiments were carried out using various eluents such as ammonia/ethanol mixture, NaOH, $NaHCO_3$, and $Na_2CO_3$, and the highest desorption rate was 75.24% in the ammonia/ethanol mixture.

  • This paper describes how the state tying model based on the decision tree which is one of Acoustic models used for speech recognition optimizes the model by reducing the number of mixture Gaussians of the output probability distribution. The state tying modeling uses a finite set of questions which is possible to include the phonological knowledge and the likelihood based decision criteria. And the recognition rate can be improved by increasing the number of mixture Gaussians of the output probability distribution. In this paper, we'll reduce the number of mixture Gaussians at the highest point of recognition rate by clustering the Gaussians. Bhattacharyya and Euclidean method will be used for the distance measure needed when clustering. And after calculating the mean and variance between the pair of lowest distance, the new Gaussians are created. The parameters for the new Gaussians are derived from the parameters of the Gaussians from which it is born. Experiments have been performed using the STOCKNAME (1,680) databases. And the test results show that the proposed method using Bhattacharyya distance measure maintains their recognition rate at $97.2\%$ and reduces the ratio of the number of mixture Gaussians by $1.0\%$. And the method using Euclidean distance measure shows that it maintains the recognition rate at $96.9\%$ and reduces the ratio of the number of mixture Gaussians by $1.0\%$. Then the methods can optimize the state tying model.

  • Purpose: This paper addresses a case study of developing a flame retardant wood-plastic composites (WPC) by adding tannic acid to the existing synthetic wood. The optimal mixing ratios of six components are explored to minimize the burning time using two mixture designs. Methods: In the preliminary experiment, six components are considered to find important components and their ranges. Seven D-optimal mixture design points are generated. Two points are removed for the balance of plastic components to be maintained, and the remaining five points are augmented with two basic compositions. Four components are selected to be considered in the main experiment. In the main experiment, pellets are extruded at the eight mixture design points. In-house testing of burning time is executed three times. Specimens made of pellets from two promising flame retardant compositions are sent to the accredited laboratories and tested. Results: The test results are as follows: 1) The best composition (Wood flour, Tannic acid, PE, Lubricant) = (25, 41, 10, 2) (wt%) shows the burning time of 1 second, which is 9-fold improvement compared to the the burning time of 9 seconds from the existing composition (58, 0, 10, 2) (wt%). 2) The second best composition (41, 25, 10, 2) (wt%) results in the burning time of 2 seconds. This composition is inferior to the best composition in terms of the flame retardancy, but more economical since it needs less tannic acid which is 100-fold expensive than the wood flour. Conclusion: Flame retardant compositions are found by adding tannic acid to the existing WPC employing optimal mixture designs. This case study will be helpful to practitioners who try to develop new products with additional physical properties with as small number of experimental trials as possible. Future research direction includes exploring conditions which satisfy both performance level and cost limitation simultaneously.

  • In recent years, there has been an interest in early-injection diesel engines as it has the potential of achieving a more homogeneous and leaner mixture close to TDC compared to standard diesel engine. The more homogeneous mixture may result in reduced NOx and soot emissions and higher efficiency in homogeneous charge compression ignition engines. While earlier studies have shown that a reduction in NOx emissions from HCCI engine is possible, there are some significant problems including the control of ignition timing and combustion rate. In order to investigate the effect of EGR and hydrogen enriched gas on combustion characteristics and emissions, an experiments with single cylinder CRDi engine were carried out concerning the formation of various premixed charge, which can achieved by early injection, EGR and hydrogen enriched gas. EGR was not effective to further reduce NOx and PM emissions. It was found that NOx emissions were decreased with an introduction of hydrogen enriched gas and an adequate diesel fuel amount.

  • A nanofluid is a fluid containing suspended solid particles, with sizes on the order of nanometers. Normally, nanofluids have higher thermal conductivitiest han their base fluids. Therefore, we measured the thermal conductivity and viscosity of oxidized carbon nanofluids based the mixture of distilled water and ethanol (ethanol concentration is 0.2) oxidized carbon nanofluids were made by ultrasonic dispersing oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes in the mixture of distilled water and ethanol at the rates of 0.001~ 0.1 vol%. The thermal conductivity and viscosity of oxidized carbon nanofluids were measured by using transient hot-wire method and rotational digital viscometer, respectively. And all of experiments were carried out at the same temperature conditions($10^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$ and $70^{\circ}C$). As a result, when volume fraction of nanofluids is 0.1 vol%, thermal conductivity was improved 13.6% ($10^{\circ}C$), 15.1% ($25^{\circ}C$), and 17.0% ($70^{\circ}C$), and its viscosity was increased by 36.0% ($10^{\circ}C$), 32.9% ($25^{\circ}C$) and 19.5% ($70^{\circ}C$) than the base fluids.

  • Infrared (IR) imaging has been researched for various applications such as surveillance. IR radiation has the capability to detect thermal characteristics of objects under low-light conditions. However, automatic segmentation for finding the object of interest would be challenging since the IR detector often provides the low spatial and contrast resolution image without color and texture information. Another hindrance is that the image can be degraded by noise and clutters. This paper proposes multi-level segmentation for extracting regions of interest (ROIs) and objects of interest (OOIs) in the IR scene. Each level of the multi-level segmentation is composed of a k-means clustering algorithm, an expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm, and a decision process. The k-means clustering initializes the parameters of the Gaussian mixture model (GMM), and the EM algorithm estimates those parameters iteratively. During the multi-level segmentation, the area extracted at one level becomes the input to the next level segmentation. Thus, the segmentation is consecutively performed narrowing the area to be processed. The foreground objects are individually extracted from the final ROI windows. In the experiments, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated using several IR images, in which human subjects are captured at a long distance. The average probability of error is shown to be lower than that obtained from other conventional methods such as Gonzalez, Otsu, k-means, and EM methods.
