  • A non-intrusive Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence(PLIF) technique was applied to study the turbulent mixing process in a Rushton turbine reactor. Instantaneous and ensemble averaged concentration fields are obtained by measuring the fluorescence intensity of Rhodamine B tracer excited by a thin Nd:Yag laser sheet illuminating the whole center plane of the stirred tank. The gray level images captured by a 14-bit cooled CCD camera can be transformed to the local concentration values using a calibration matrix. The dye injection point was selected at the tank wall with three quarter height (3/4H) from the tank bottom to observe the mixing characteristics in upper bulk flow region. There exist distinct two time scales: the rapid decay of mean concentration in each region after the dye infusion reflects the large scale mixing while the followed slow decay reveals the small scale mixing. The temporal change of concentration probability functions conjectures the two sequential processes in the batch type mixing. An inactive column of water existed above the impeller disk, in which the fluid rotates with the shaft but is isolated from the mean bulk flow.

  • A theoretical analysis is developed for an annular injection type supersonic ejector having a second-throat downstream under the assumption that the Fabri-chocking is placed in mixing chamber. Non-mixing theory is applied to formulate secondary flow pressure in the region between inlet of the mixing chamber and Fabri-chocking. To describe the shock standing at the inlet of the mixing chamber, two dimensional oblique shock relations are used and it is assumed that the shock affects only primary flow at Fabri-chocking plane. In conclusion, it agrees well with experiments in case of small contracting angle of mixing chamber, under 4degrees.

  • Hydrodynamic characteristics of a stratified flow at a Y-junction were examined analytically. Gas is supplied through the main horizontal channel and liquid is introduced into the gas stream from the Y-shaped bottom branch. Analysis was performed with irrational flow and inviscid fluid assumptions. The Stokes' inverse transformation technique was adopted to convert the real x-y plane into the x-.psi. plane. The potential flow equation was solved numerically in the transformed (x-.psi.) plane and the interface profile, pressure distribution and the streamlines were obtained. The effects of the inlet conditions, injection angle and the gravity on the flow characteristics were also examined. To check the validity of the present method, the previous resultant the two-dimensional obtuse wedge flow was compared. The inverse transformation technique turned out to be also very useful to predict the hydrodynamic characteristics of a stratified flow with the pressure variation at a Y-shaped mixing junction.

  • We report on the analytical results of examination of fully developed asymmetric flow and heat transfer between parallel plane plates. The asymmetry was introduced by roughening one of the plane while the other was left smooth. The integral method together with a turbulence model based on modified Prandtl's mixing length theory for the rough was used to determine the velocity distribution and friction. The temperature distrtibution is then predicted and heat transfer coefficients are calculated. The present paper shows that the heat transfer increases more than the friction factor for a given roughness structure. Generally the results show the strong effect of asymmetry on engineering parameters. Furthermore it is the roughness structure which influences the nature of asymmetry and heat transfer.

  • The hydraulic performance analysis of a pump system composed of an inducer and impeller for the application on turbopumps has been performed using three-dimensional Wavier-Stokes equations. A simple mixing-plane method and a full interaction method are used to simulate inducer/impeller interactions. The computations adopting two methods show almost similar results due to the weak interaction between the inducer and impeller since the inducer outlet blade angle is rather small. But, because the inducer and the impeller are closely spaced near the shroud region at the interface, flow angles at the impeller inlet show different results between two methods. Thus, the full interaction method predicted about $2\%$ higher pump performance than the mixing-plane method. And the effects of prewhirl at the impeller inlet are also investigated. As the inlet flow angle is increased, the head rise and the efficiency are decreased. The computational results are compared with experimental ones. The computational results at the design point show good agreements with experimental data. But the computation was found to under-predict the head rise at high mass flow rates compared to the experiment, further study must be followed in terms of the computation and experiment.

  • In this study an analysis of the flow characteristics in three types of turbo-fans for a vacuum cleaner was performed by using CFD. The characteristics of three models calculated for various rotating speed for flow rates are obtained and compared with measured data. The mixing plane approach is applied to compute the flow between impeller and diffuser. The results show that the model that is modified to reduce fan noise gives stable flow characteristics in operating range than the original model, with both models show similar performance characteristics at the range of high flow rate. Since in the modified model it takes much longer for an impeller blade to pass a diffuser blade than in the original model, and the peak pressure at BPF can be relieved, it is anticipated that the modified model give much lower noise level with similar performance than the original one, which remains to be verified by unsteady computation and measurements. The good agreement between the predictions and measurement results confirms the validity of this study.

  • The performance of a centrifugal compressor composed of an impeller, tandem diffuser rows and axial guide vanes has been predicted numerically and compared with available experimental results on its design rotational speed. The pitchwise-averaged mixing plane method was employed for the boundaries between rotor and stator to obtain steady state solutions. The overall characteristics showed difference according to the relative positions of tandem diffuser rows while the characteristics of impeller showed almost identical result. The numerical results agree with the measured data in respect of their tendency. It turned out that $0\%$ of relative positions is the worst case in terms of static pressure recovery and efficiency. According to the experimental results, some pressure fluctuations and malfunction of the compressor were observed for $75\%$ case. However, this numerical calculation using mixing plane method did not capture any of those phenomena. Thus, unsteady flow calculation should be performed to investigate the stability of the compressor caused by different diffuser configuration.

  • Effect of polyaniline and additives on surface appearance of Zn electrodeposition was investigated by SEM and XRD analyzing. We carried out the experiment from sulfate Zinc bath containing sulfonated polyaniline, gelatin and thiourea by EG(Electrogalvanizing) simulator. Addition of polyaniline and gelatin in bath, crystal size and shape of hexagonal plane of Zn crystal reduced. Mixing of thiourea, however, brittle deposits were observed because of the difference between vertical growth and parallel growth. (1011) peak appeared with polyaniline and gelatin in XRD analysis. In case of mixing of polyaniline, gelatin and thiourea, (1011) peak appeared and intensity of Zn basal plane decreased. These results suggested that overpotential increased with addition of polyaniline and additives In bath.
