The intermediate mixing chamber is one of various methods for improving the regression rate and combustion efficiency of the hybrid rocket. The mixing chamber with its non-combustible material makes the propulsion performance increase, but it leads to a low fuel-loading density in the combustion chamber; therefore, this performance-related trade-off between the mixing chamber and the low fuel-loading density was studied. In this study, the trade-off was conducted by comparing the intermediate-mixing-chamber case with a w/o-mixing-chamber case. The small hybrid-sounding rocket is designed with internal ballistics for comparing the rocket length to the weight. In addition, an external ballistic analysis was conducted for comparing the performances of the w/- and w/o-mixing-chamber cases. As a result, the intermediate-mixing-chamber case shows that the length and the weight were decreased to 12 % and 8 %, respectively; furthermore, when compared with the normal cases, the estimated altitude result of the w/-mixing-chamber case was increased to approximately 75 m.
The prediction performance of combustion models in the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) were evaluated by comparing with experiment for compartment propane gas fires. The mixture fraction model in the FDS v5.5.3 and Eddy Dissipation Concept (EDC) model in the FDS v6.6.3 were adopted in the simulations. Four chemical reaction mechanisms, such as 1-step Mixing Controlled, 2-step Mixing Controlled, 3-step Mixing Controlled and 3-step Mixed (Mixing Controlled + finite chemical reactions) reactions, were implemented in the EDC model. The simulation results with each combustion model showed similar level for the temperature inside the compartment. The prediction performance of FDS with each combustion model showed significant differences for the CO concentration while no distinguished differences were identified for the $O_2$ and $CO_2$ concentrations. The EDC 3-step Mixing Controlled largely over-predicted the CO concentration obtained by experiment and the mixture fraction model under-predicted the experiment slightly. The EDC 3-step Mixed showed the best prediction performance for the CO concentration and the EDC 2-step Mixing Controlled also predicted the CO concentration reasonably. The EDC 1-step Mixing Controlled significantly under-predict the experimental CO concentration when the previously suggested CO yield was adopted. The FDS simulation with the EDC 1-step Mixing Controlled showed difficulties in predicting the $CO_2$ concentration when the CO yield was modified to predict the CO concentration reasonably.

This study suggest the improvement of the CFRP adhesive mixing ratio about acoustic window to enhance SONAR performance. The CFRP of submarine is produced by allocation an acoustic window zone by the beam width of SONAR sensors. During the sea trial, SONAR system's bearing and range accuracy data is not in tolerance due to debonding phenomenon on CFRP. The inappropriate mixing ratio of adhesives caused that peeling phenomenon occurred in the acoustic window part, which is the reason for the deterioration of SONAR sensors performance. The report includes explanation of test procedure of SONAR, root cause analysis, CFRP manufacturing procedure, laboratory tests results, and proof of the performance at the sea trial.
In this research, we experimentally investigated the sealing performance of elastomeric rotary lip seals for washing machines. In general, NBR is used as a material for elastomeric rotary lip seals in washing machines, but the mixing formula of the rubber material can affect the sealing performance. In this study, we manufactured rotary lip seals using three kinds of NBRs with a different mixing formula, and examined the sealing performance using an acceleration test mode. The results of an SEM investigation into the surfaces of three kinds of specimens showed a much smaller wear volume and better sealing performance for the specimens with smaller particle sizes of mixing composition than for the specimen with the larger. Repeated deformation and recovery by the shaft-to-seal eccentricity on rotation were shown to cause a phase difference in the rubber material, and we measured the recovery ratio to find the influence of this phase difference on the sealing performance. As another method for checking the phase difference, we also measured tan ä, and a lower tan ä was revealed as the recovery ratio increased for each specimen. Specimens with a higher recovery ratio (lower tan ä) were shown to have a better sealing performance. Consequently, specimens with a smaller particle size in the mixing composition had a better sealing performance because they show a higher recovery ratio.

Mixing of molecular grains having different characteristics is very important in many industries such as the food and pharmaceutical industries. With the development of computer simulations, it is common practice to find the optimal mixing conditions through a simulation before the actual mixing task to estimate the proper level of mixing. Accordingly, there has been an increasing need for a mixing index to measure the mix of particles in the simulation process. Mixing indices, which have been widely used so far, can largely be classified into two types: first is the statistical-based mixing index, which is prepared using the sampling method, and the second is the mixing index that is prepared using all the particles. In this paper, we calculated mixing indices in different ways for the data in the course of mixing the particles using the DEM simulation. Additionally, we compared the performance, advantages, and disadvantages of each mixing index. Therefore, I propose a standard that can be used to select an appropriate mixing index.
We have investigated the mixing behavior of a tubular heat exchanger reactor using CFD and compared its mixing performance with different type of reactors such as jet mixer and continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The mixedness in each reactor was quantified introducing a statistical average value, the coefficient of variation (CoV), which is a normalized standard deviation of concentration of a component over the whole fluid domain. Through the analysis of the flow pattern and turbulent energy distribution, we suggested a simple but effective way to improve the mixing performance of the tubular heat-exchanger reactor, which include the addition of the internals and/or the increase of the recycle flow rate. It was found that the CoV value of the tubular reactor could be nearly equivalent to that of CSTR by applying those two alternatives suggested here.
Industrial mixers to homogeneously blend particulate materials have been developed and widely used in various industries. However, most industrial mixers have at most two-degree-of-freedom for the operation, which limits the range of operation parameter selection for optimal blending. This paper proposes a multi-degree-of-freedom robotic mixer designed by converging a conventional drum blender and a robotic manipulator and evaluated its performance in a virtual operating environment. Discrete element simulations were conducted for mixing performance evaluation. The numerical results showed that the proposed mixer design exhibits a better mixing performance than conventional ones.

Due to the small size and weight of micro aerial vehicle (MAV), only miniaturized MEMS type sensors are applicable for MAV autonomous flight system. In this paper, we propose a accelerometer and gyro mixing algorithm to improve an attitude performance of MEMS type sensors. The performance of the proposed mixing algorithm is compared with the performance of fuzzy-based mixing algorithm through simulation. The simulation results show that the attitude compensation method through the attitude compensation has better performance than the fuzzy-based mixing method for MAV attitude estimation.

A CNG/diesel dual-fuel engine uses CNG as the main fuel and injects a small amount of diesel as an ignition priming. This study proposed the modification of the existing diesel engine into a dual-fuel engine that injects diesel with a high pressure by common rail direct injection (CRDI) and by injecting CNG at the intake port for premixing. And experiment was progressed for understanding about effect of CNG mixing ratio. The CNG/diesel dual-fuel engine showed equally satisfactory coordinate torque and power regardless of CNG mixing ratio. The PM emission was low at any CNG mixing ratio because of very small diesel pilot injection. In case of NOx and HC, high CNG mixing ratio showed low NOx and HC emissions at low speed. At medium & high speed, low CNG mixing ratio showed low NOx and HC emissions. Therefore, it would be optimized by controlling CNG mixing ratio.

With an aim placed on its exploitation on practical injector design, liquid phase mixing due to unlike split triplet impinging element is experimentally investigated by a series of cold tests. Non-reacting kerosene/water spray simulates the kerosene/LOX propellant combination. Measurements of local mixture ratio distribution were made for different injection configurations and different momentum ratios. Mixing and mixing controlled characteristic velocity efficiencies are measured in terms of oxidizer/fuel jet momentum ratio from 0.5 to 8. Extent of mixing and its influence on hot performance are estimated in terms of mixing efficiency and mixing controlled characteristic velocity. Envelope of design locus for optimum mixing quality and corresponding maximum hot performance are proposed. Effects of momentum ratio, orifice diameter ratio and jet velocity ratios are also presented and discussed.
