Cordierite Powder Preparation from Alkoxides without Using Organic Solvents (유기용매의 사용없이 알콕사이드로부터 코디어라이트 분말제조)

  • Cordierite powders were prepared by controlled hydrolysis of metal alkoxides with catalysts in water medium without using organic solvents. Water was adjusted to a certain pH by HC1 and NH4OH. $\alpha$-Cordierite powder was prepared from aluminum isopropoxide, tetraethyl orthosilicate and magnesium ethoxide mixed with water adjusted to pH of 3. At water pH of 11, $\alpha$-cordierite, mullite and $\beta$-quartz phases were coexisted. The powders were freeze dried, calcined and then fired at different temperatures. The characteristics of powders were examined by means of DTA, X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, and electron microscopy. It was found that $\alpha$-cordierite could be synthesized at temperature of 120$0^{\circ}C$ from the powders prepared by alkoxides with water medium without organic solvents.

A comparison of desorption efficiency by types of solvent for polar and non-polar organic compounds collected on activated charcoal tube (활성탄관에 포집된 극성 및 비극성 유기용제 분석시 탈착용매 종류에 따른 탈착효율 비교)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate desorption efficiencies by types of desorption solvent for polar and non-polar organic compounds collected on activated charcoal tubes. Analytes tested were toluene, m-xylene, isobutyl alcohol, n-butyl alcohol, cellosolve acetate, and butyl cellosolve. Three different concentration levels of spiked sample were made. Types of cosolvent mixed with the main solvent, $CS_2$, were methanol, pentanol, and dimethylformamide (DMF) and the cosolvent for methylenechloride was methanol. The amounts of cosolvent added to the main solvent were 1, 5, and 10% by volume (v/v%), respectively. The results were as follows: 1. For all mixed solvents except 1% methanol and 1% pentanol with $CS_2$, desorption efficiency significantly increased, compared with that of $CS_2$ alone. 2. Desorption efficiency increased by increasing analyte loading on charcoal tube regardless of mixed solvents used and the material polarity. 3. For all cosolvents mixed with $CS_2$ by 1% and 5% volume, desorption efficiency for non-polar compound was significantly higher than that of polar compound. For the 10% mixed solvents and the methylenechloride mixed with methanol, the results were opposite. 4. The lowest mean percent bias of 4.79% was obtained from the 5% DMF-$CS_2$ mixed solvent, followed by 4.82% from the 10% DMF-$CS_2$ solvent while the highest bias of 23.26% was from the solvent of $CS_2$ alone. Based on the results of this study, in order to increase desorption efficiency, it is recommended to add such cosolvents as methanol, pentanol, and DMF to $CS_2$, preferably 5% by volume for analyzing polar compounds collected in charcoal tubes.

A Study on Worker Exposure to Organic Solvents and Niose in Print Workplace (일부 인쇄업 근로자의 유기용제 및 소음 노출에 관한 연구)

  • This study was investigated to evaluate worker exposures to organic solvents by type of print industry. Results were as follows; 1. Workers were exposed to mixture of toluene, isopropyl alcohol(IPA), methyl ethyl ketone(MEK), n-hexane, ethylacetate(EA), acetone. The components of high exposure solvents were toluene, IPA and MEK. 2. Considering additive effects of the compounds, exposure indices(Em) were calculated. The Mean of exposure indices were 1.79 for Gravere, 0.41 for Screen and 0.14 for Opset workplace. The workers of Gravere workplace were estimated to overexpose for solvents. 3. The highest overexposed solvent was toluene for a single component. The rate of overexposed level for toluene was 7.41% for some print workplace and for mixed solvent was 1.85%. 4. Local exhaust systems were inappropriate and respiratory protective devices were not supplied to the workers. 5. Sound level was over 90dB(A) in Opset print workplace and some measures should be performed to get down the sound level.

Experimental Study and Correlation of the Solid-liquid Equilibrium of Some Amino Acids in Binary Organic Solvents

  • Under ordinary atmospheric circumstances, the gravimetric technique was used to measure the solubility of L-cysteine (L-Cys) and L-alanine (L-Ala) in various solvents, including methyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, and mixtures of the two, in the range o 283.15 K to 323.15 K. Both individual solvents and their combinations showed a rise in the solubility of L-Cys and L-Ala with increasing temperature, according to the analyzed data but when analyzed at a constant temperature in the selected mixed solvents, the solubility declined with decreasing of initial mole fractions of methyl alcohol. To further assess, the relative utility of the four solubility models, we fitted the solubility data using the Jouyban-Acree (J-A), van't Hoff-Jouyban-Acree (V-J-A), Apelblat-Jouyban-Acree (A-J-A), and Ma models followed by evaluation of the values of the RAD information criteria and the RMSD were. The dissolution was also found to be an entropy-driven spontaneous mixing process in the solvents since the thermodynamic parameters of the solvents were determined using the van't Hoff model. In order to support the industrial crystallization of L-cysteine and L-alanine and contribute to future theoretical research, we have determined the experimental solubility, correlation equations, and thermodynamic parameters of the selected amino acids during the dissolution process.

A Study Effect of Mixed Solvents on the Retention of Polystyrenes Using Thermal Field-Flow Fractionation (열장 흐름 분획법에 의한 폴리스티렌의 머무름에 미치는 혼합용매의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The retention behaviors of polystyrenes influenced by mixed solvents are examined in thermal field-flow fractionation(ThFFF). Experimental data are obtained with polystyrene samples of molecular weights of 35,000, 110,000, 200,000 and 470,000 dissolved in organic solvents. The pure and mixed solvents are tetrahydrofuran(THF), chloroform(CHL), cyclohexane(CH), and benzene(BZ), respectively. The values of retention ratio(R) and thermal diffusion coefficient($D_T$) are measured with change of molecular weight and composition of mixed solvents. Atempts are then made to correlate the measured values with various physicochemical parameters of polymers and solvents. Studies suggest that R is significantly increased with the density of solvent and a good correlation is found between them. $D_T$ values decreases in the mixed solvent having has a higher concentration of poor solvent.

Comparison between the Charcoal Tube Sampling Method and the Diffusive Sampler, and the Applicability of Diffusive Sampler in the Field (확산형포집기(3M OVM #3500)와 활성탄관의 유기용제 포집농도 비교 및 확산형포집기의 현장 적용 가능성)

  • To investigate the field applicability of a diffusive sampler (3M OVM #3500, passive sampling method) authors conducted a simultaneous measurement of personal organic solvents exposure in the air of the workplaces by charcoal tube with low volume sampler (active sampling method) and diffusive sampler. Samples were collected and analyzed by NIOSH method ($NMAM^{(R)}$) from thirty-eight workers in 12 factories who work in 6 different processes. Geometric mean (GM) and geometric standard deviation (GSD) were used to describe the result. To compare the results of the two methods, paired t-test was used. According to the manual of the exposure assessment of the mixed organic solvents (Ministry of Labor, Korea), Em was calculated. Simple linear regression was used to evaluate the relationship between the two methods. Results were as follows; 1. Eight different solvents (ethyl acetate, n-hexane, toluene, xylene, acetone, isopropyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and methyl isobutyl ketone) were detected simultaneously in the two methods and the concentrations of the personal exposure were lower than 0.5 TLV level. The concentration of the charcoal tube method was higher than that of a diffusive sampler in n-hexane and MEK (p<0.05). 2. Em of the charcoal tube method was higher than that of diffusive sampler method but not significantly different and was lower than the OEL (Occupational Exposure Limit) in all 6 processes. 3. There was a significant correlation between the two methods in low concentrations of the 8 organic solvents (p<0.05). In conclusion, there was no difference in charcoal tube method and diffusive sampler method in low concentrations of some organic solvents, diffusive sampler can be applied to assess the personal monitoring in low level exposure.

Exposure of Organic Solvent Mixtures and Subjective Symptoms to Beauty-Salon Workers (미용실(Beauty salon) 근로자들의 유기용제 폭로와 자각증상에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the health of beauty salon workers through the utilization of questionnaires concerning the extent of exposure to organic solvents found in the air of some beauty salons and any resultant symptoms in employees. The subjects were 36 employees from 10 beauty salons who agreed to participate in this study. The degree of exposure to organic solvents in the air of beauty salons was measured from September 1, 2008 to September 30, 2008. A survey of symptoms that occurred due to exposure to these solvents was also performed. The results were as follows: questionnaires were collected and analyzed from a total of 36 subjects. Of these, 28(77.8%) were female and 8(22.2%) were male. The mean age was 29.08. The mean working period was 7.13 years. Sixteen subjects attended programs at universities while 11 went to beauty schools for vocational education. When testing the concentration of organic solvents in the air of beauty salons, the highest value found was Isopropyl alcohol 511.85 ppb followed by butyl acetate, toluene, acetone, xylene, ethyl benzene, styrene, and chlorobenzene. A logistic regression analysis was performed as follows: the point of each factor was the dependent variable while sex, age, drinking, smoking, educational level, work experience, hairdresser's license, and organic solvents were the independent variables. Statistically significant difference (p<0.05) was shown in the hairdresser's license among Factor 1 and in Xylene among Factor 2; however, difference was not shown in the other variables.

Novel Pd Catalysts with β-Diketiminates for Homopolymerization of Functionalized Norbornene Derivatives in Water/Organic Mixed Solvents

  • Polynorbornenes prepared by vinyl addition pathway are known to have some desirable characteristics for wider application but they have some critical drawbacks such as brittleness, poor solubility and adhesion. In order to improve these drawbacks, extensive research for the successful homo- and copolymerization of polar functionalized norbornene with olefin has been carried out. Even though considerable advance has been achieved in the polymerization of polar functionalized monomers, successful catalytic systems for the homopolymerization of polar functionalized norbornene are rare. In this study, a novel successful catalytic system for the polymerization of polar functionalized norborene is proposed. This system employs Pd ${\beta}$-diketiminate/borate cocatalyst in water/organic mixed solvents and it is unique due to introduction of water as a component of solvents. Polymers obtained in this study show high Mw with narrow PDI. Effects of several reaction parameters to the polymer activity and properties are investigated and optimal catalytic system are proposed.

The Effect of Exposure to Mixed Organic Solvents on Lipid Peroxidation in Ship Building Painters

  • In the last several years, studies on the association of oxidative stress damage with exposure in the work place have been conducted. Xenobiotics create an imbalance of the homeostasis between oxidant molecules and antioxidant defense. By monitoring oxidative stress biomarkers, information was obtained on damages induced by oxidative stress and the toxicity of xenobiotics. In the present study, a Job Exposure Matrix (JEM) was constructed using the data from the Working Environment Measurement (WEM) of painters in the shipyard industry from the past 3 years to assess the exposure status. Additionally, by measuring the concentration of urinary malondialdehyde (MDA), the effect of lipid peroxidation was examined. The subjects consisted of 68 workers who were exposed to mixed organic solvents in the painting process and 25 non-exposure controls. The exposure indices of the exposure groups were significantly different (sprayer: 0.83, touchup: 0.54, assistant: 0.13, P<0.05). The urinary MDA concentration of the exposure group was 48.60${\pm}$ 39.23 ${\mu}mol$/mol creatinine, which was significantly higher than 18.03${\pm}$16.33 ${\mu}mol$/mol creatinine of the control group (P<0.05). From the multiple regression analysis of urinary MDA, the regression coefficient for exposure grade was statistically significant. In future studies, evaluation of the antioxidant levels of subjects should be performed simultaneously with quantitative exposure measurements.

Mixed Electrolytes of Organic Solvents and Ionic Liquid for Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Batteries

  • Mixed electrolytes formed by the combination of 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (BMP-TFSI) ionic liquid and standard liquid electrolyte are prepared and characterized. Linear sweep voltammetry measurements demonstrate that these mixed systems exhibit a wide electrochemical stability window, allowing them to be suitable electrolyte for carbonaceous anode-based lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion cells composed of graphite anode and $LiCoO_2$ cathode are assembled using the mixed electrolytes, and their cycling performances are evaluated. The cell containing proper content of BMP-TFSI shows good cycling performance comparable to that of a cell assembled with organic electrolyte. The presence of BMP-TFSI in the mixed electrolyte contributes to the reduction of the flammability of electrolyte solution and the improvement of the thermal stability of charged $Li_{1-x}CoO_2$ in the electrolyte solution.
