Electrochemical Characteristics of MMO(Ti/Ru)-Coated Titanium in a Cathode Environment of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (MMO(Ti/Ru) 코팅된 타이타늄의 고분자 전해질 연료전지 양극환경에서의 전기화학적 거동)

  • In this research, mixed metal oxide (TiO2, RuO2) coating was applied to grade 1 titanium as a bipolar plate for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Electrochemical experiments were carried out in an aqueous solution of pH 3 (H2SO4 + 0.1 ppm HF, 80 ℃) determined by DoE. The air was bubbled to simulate a cathode environment. Potentiodynamic polarization test revealed that corrosion current densities of the titanium substrate and MMO-coated specimen were 0.180 µA/cm2 and 4.381 µA/cm2, respectively. There was no active peak. After potentiostatic experiment, current densities of the titanium substrate and the MMO-coated specimen were 0.19 µA/cm2 and 1.05 µA/cm2, respectively. As a result of observing the surface before and after the potentiostatic experiment, cracked dried clay structures were observed without corrosion damage. Both the titanium substrate and the MMO-coated specimen could not satisfy the interfacial contact resistance suggested by the DoE. Thus, further research is needed before they could be applied as bipolar plates.

Preparation and Characterization of Ta-substituted Li7La3Zr2-xO12 Garnet Solid Electrolyte by Sol-Gel Processing

  • In this work, Ta-substituted $Li_7La_3Zr_{2-x}O_{12}$ (LLZTO) powder and pellets with garnet cubic structure were fabricated and characterized by modified and optimized sol-gel synthesis. Ta-substituted LLZO powder with the smallest grain size and pure cubic structure with little pyrochlore phase was obtained by synthesis method in which Li and La sources in propanol solvent were mixed together with Zr and Ta sources in 2-methoxy ethanol. The LLZTO pellets made with the prepared powder showed cubic garnet structure for all conditions when the amount of Li addition was varied from 6.2 to 7.4 mol. All the X-ray peaks of the pyrochlore phase disappeared when the Li addition was increased above 7.0 mol. When the final sintering temperature was varied, the LLZTO pellet had a pyrochlore-mixed cubic phase above $1000^{\circ}C$. However, the surface morphology became much denser when the final sintering temperature was increased. The sol-gel-driven LLZTO pellet with a sintering temperature of $1100^{\circ}C$ showed a lithium ionic conductivity of 0.21 mS/cm when Au was adopted as electrode material for the blocking capacitor. The results of this study suggest that modified sol-gel synthesis is the optimum method to obtain cubic phase of LLZTO powder for highly dense and conductive solid electrolyte ceramics.

  • Electrochemical discharge machining (ECDM) has been found to be suitable for the micro-hole machining of nonconductive materials such as ceramics or glass compared with existing conventional and also non-conventional machining methods. However this machining process has some problems such as low geometric accuracy and low machining efficiency due to the random spark generation at the end of the electrode. This paper proposes the methods to improve the geometric accuracy of micro-hole using powder mixed ECDM process. The experimental results show the effects of powder producing improved geometric accuracy of machined hole and decreased concentration of spark energy.

  • In this study, we fabricated honeycomb type Mixed-Gas Fuel Cell (MGFC) which has advantages of stacking to the axial direction and increasing volume power density. Honeycomb-shaped anode with four channels was prepared by dry pressing method. Two alternative channels were coated with electrolyte and cathode slurry in order to make cathodic reaction sites and the others were filled with partial oxidation (POX) catalyst to increase fuel conversion. Furthermore we employed the sol-gel technique which can increase cell performance and decrease carbon coking.

  • Uranium radionuclides are electrodeposited on inexpensive stainless steel cathode from a mixed oxalate-chloride electrolyte. The factors affecting the optimum condition for the deposition are determined by studying the effects of deposition time, initial current, electrode spacing, pH of electrolyte and uranium concentration in the electrolyte at fixed cathode area. The experiment which was repeated 3 times at each uranium concentration with 60 minutes of deposition time, gave an error of less than 4% standard deviation at the 90% confidence level with average yield greater than 99%.

  • Electrodes were fabricated based on activated carbon powder BP-20, conducting agent such as Super P, vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF) and acetylene black (AB), and the mixed binders of flexible poly(vinylidenefluoridehexafluoropropylene) [P(VdF-co-HFP)] and cross linking dispersion agent of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to increase mechanical strength. According to impedance measurement of the electrode with the addition of conducting agent, we found that it was possible to charge rapidly by the fast steady-state current convergence due to low equivalent series resistance (AC-ESR, fast charge transfer rate at interface between electrode and electrolyte and low RC time constant. The self-discharge of unit cell showed that diffusion process was controlled by the ion concentration difference of initial electrolyte due to the characteristics of Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) charged by ion adsorption in the beginning, but this by current leakage through the double-layer at the electrode/electrolyte interface had a minor effect and voltages of curves were remained constant regardless of electrode material. We found that the 2.3V/230F grade EDLC would be applied to industrial safety usage such as uninterrupted power supply (UPS) because of the constant DC-ESR by IR drop regardless of discharge current.

Effect of Oxidation of Ni on the Microstructure of Ni/YSZ Anode and Crack Formation in YSZ Electrolyte Layer for SOFC (Ni의 산화가 고체산화물 연료전지용 Ni/YSZ 연료극의 미세조직과 전해질의 균열에 미치는 영향)

  • The microstructural changes in Ni/YSZ anode substrate and crack formation during Ni oxidation were investigated. The composition of as-sintered anodes was 56 wt% NiO+44 wt% YSZ and that of electrolyte was 8 mol% yttria. After complete reduction, specimens were oxidized in $N_2$ + air at $600\sim800^{\circ}C$. Oxygen partial pressure was controlled in between 0.05 atm and 0.2 atm $O_2$. When the anode was oxidized, at higher than $690^{\circ}C$, three layers were formed in the specimens. The first was fully oxidized layer(NiO/YSZ), the second was a mixed layer and the third, near-intact layer. Under $640^{\circ}C$ such distinctive layers were not observed. Cracks formed at electrolyte layer when weight gain attained at $65\sim75%$ of the total gain due to complete oxidation despite of different oxidation temperature and oxygen partial pressure.

  • We have studied to find the optimum electrolyte that satisfied high ionic conductivity, large elec-trochemical window, etc in Li-ion battery. And also studied were the effect of a passive film on carbon anode surface,which is formed by solvent decomposition during the initial charge process. Electrochemical properties of the passive film formed on carbon anode surface investigated and explained as the volumetric ratio of the mixed solvents. The results of scanning electron microscopy, chronopotentiometry, cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy revealed that the electrochemical properties of the passive film were varied with the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte including the mixed solvents.

  • Very fine cobalt oxide xerogel and ambigel powder were prepared using a unique solution chemistry associated with the sol-gel process. The mesoporous structure of the initial gel is maintained by removing fluid under conditions where the capillary forces that result extraction are either low or no existent, are either low or nonexistent. Controlling both the pore and solid architecture on the nanoscale offers a strategy for the design of supercapacitor. The results materials determine by using electrode that mixed ketjen black and PVdF. But CoO$\_$x/ have the low voltage, so we experimente to change electrolyte and various concentration.

  • In order to investigate experimentally the clinical effect of Soyangin-Hyongbangdojoksan (少陽人荊防導赤散) that was prescribed to cure the Bisuhanpyohanbyong (脾受寒表寒病) of Soyangin (少陽人). The author experimented various activities of dried extract from hyongbangdojoksan (Sample-I) and mixed extract of each dried extract of hyongbangdojoksan (Sample-II) by the methods prescribed in the experimental parts. The results summarized as follows. 1. In the acetic acid method experiment, analgesic effect was noted in sample-I & Sample-II. 2. Anti-inflammatory effect on the edema induced by carrageenin was noted in Sample-I. 3. Antipyretic effect is not noted in Sample-I and Sample-II. 4. On urinary volume change and blood electrolyte clearance, the result is not significant, on the contrary the urine electrolyte discharge is effective in Sample-I and Sample-II. According to the above results, the effects based on oriental medical references approximate to the actual experimental results.
