Cellulose-digesting bacteria were isolated from hindgut of Allomyrina dichotoma (Coleoptera: Dynastidae). The bacterial isolates were identified as Yersinia sp. and Bacillus sp. The addition of the identified bacteria to diet increased growth rate of the cetoniid beetle, Protaetia brevitarsis senlensis (Coleoptera: Cetoniidae), probably by digesting cellulose nutrient contained in the oak tree sawdust diet. An additive of wheat flour at more than 10% to the sawdust diet significantly enhanced growth of P. brevitarsis senlensis. Trimmed branches of apple trees have been disposed in the apple farms and could be used for a diet component of the cetoniid beetle when the cellulose-digesting bacteria were mixed with the derived-sawdust. Resulting manure from mass rearing of P. brevitarsis senlensis contained high organic matters and trace amounts of toxic metals. When the manure were splayed on soil, it was effective as a natural compost and significantly stimulated lettuce growth. This research suggests a model technology to use cellulose-digesting bacteria to use for culturing grub, which results in natural recycles of trimmed branches in apple farms as grub diet, and to use grub manure as a natural compost.

To investigate the potential of paper mill sludge and briquet ash as cultural media in turfgrass, zoysiagrass was grown in the mixtures prepared with paper mill sludge and briquet ash. The mixtures were consisted of sludge and briquet ash in the ratio by volume 3:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 in the order. To compare the growth responses, some plants were grown in the medium containing sand(3), field soil(1) and peatmoss (1) by volume anti regarded as control. 1. Activated sludge mixed with sand increased plant height, fresh weight, and dry weight more than 1.5-2.0 times compared to those of the control. The highest plant growth was shown in mixtures containing 67% activated sludge. 2. Plant density per $100cm^2$ and chlorophyll content were higher in all mixtures containing activated sludge than control. 3. The growth of zoysiagrass was reduced along with the increase of non-activated sludge ratio, but no difference was found in chlorophyll content. 4. Plant height, fresh weight and dry weight were greater in activated sludge combined with sand compared to the briquet ash mixtures, but the difference of shoot density between two mixtures was not shown. 5. Even though non-activated sludge appeared not to be appropriate to the growth of seedlings, the number of tillers of plant propagated with rhizome was more increased compared to control when briquet ash content was less than 75%.

The main component of dental plaque is the mutan containing the a-1,3 bond. The following results were obtained by using a blue mutan to assess the factors affecting the mutan-digesting activity of Streptomyces exfoliatus isolated from soil. A clear zone was produced by mutanase-producing Streptomyces exfoliatus on the minimal essential agar containing blue mutan. Streptomyces exfoliatus digested more blue mutan in the minimal essential broth at pH 7.0 than at pH 5.5 or 8.5. Streptomyces exfoliatus digested more blue mutan at $37^{\circ}C$ than at $32^{\circ}C$ or $42^{\circ}C$ (P<0.05). When the concentration of $CaCl_2$ was increased in the minimal essential broth, the digestion of blue mutan was increased (P<0.05). The optimal concentration of KCl was 10mM to digest blue mutan, but a similar amount of blue mutan was digested at the range of 0.1mM to 6.4mM of $MgCl_2$. When the culture supernatant of Streptomyces exfoliatus was mixed with 2X brain heart infusion broth containing 0.5% yeast extract and 10% sucrose, less artificial plaque was formed by Streptococcus mutans on the orthodontic wire (P<0.05). These results indicated that the secretion of mutanase was identified in culture supernatant of mutan-digesting Streptomyces exfoliatus, suppressing the formation of artificial plaque by Streptococcus mutans.
A calcium source is necessary for calcite precipitation within soil particles by microbial decomposition of urea and a calcium chloride is usually used. The harmful environmental impact of calcium chloride on road, ground and plants is severe. In this study, an eggshell with vinegar is investigated for an environmental-friendly calcium source. Urea-decomposing microorganism and eggshell or calcium chloride as a calcium source are mixed with Ottawa sand to precipitate calcite. Then, the cemented sand with calcite is tested for calcite precipitation, permeability and unconfined compressive strength. A specimen is prepared by loose Ottawa sand in a size of 5 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height. A urea solution with Sporosarcina pasteurii and two different calcium sources is injected into the specimen once a day for 30 days. Calcite precipitated at average of 7.2% on the specimen with eggshell as a calcium source, which was 1.2 times more than that with calcium chloride. The permeability of a specimen with eggshell was at average of 3.82E-5 cm/s, which was 7.7 times lower than that with calcium chloride. Unconfined compressive strength of a specimen with eggshell was at average of 387 kPa, which was 1.2 times higher than that with calcium chloride. As more calcite precipitated, the strength increased while the permeability decreased, regardless of calcium sources.

Jeonjangri site of Geochang area is located in the Geochang Basin, and lies on the river terrace of upstream part of Hwang River. Fluvial deposits are well distributed at the northern and southern walls of trench 2(district 2) in the Jeonjangri archeological site. This study aims to interpret the occurrences of fluvial sedimentary deposits on the basis of grain size analysis and palynological analysis in the representative sections of Jeongjangri site. The sedimentary profile shows that the upper units are typified by paleosols with soil wedge formed at about $25,000{\sim}30,000yr$ B.P, and the lower units are characterized by reddish brown muddy sands, organic muds and sand/gravel downwards in the profile. Particularly palynological study on the organic muds of southern wall section showed a result that lower unit is dominant with grass vegetation, and upper unit with Alnus-Quercus-Pinus vegetation. The former is interpreted to be formed at $60,000{\sim}50,000yr$ B.P (stadial), while the latter at $80,000{\sim}70,000yr$ B.P. In general broad-leaved/coniferous mixed forests are mostly dominant in Jeongjangri site and the climate was presumed to be cool temperate at that time.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of different feed conditions on growth, cast production and conversion efficiency of organic matter to the earthworm. The experiment was tested on cow manure(CM) mixed with rice hulls (RH) or rice straw(RS). The mixture ratios were designed as one time, two times and three times of cow manure volume, respectively. The CM and RH mixtures resulted better on growth rate, reproductive efficiency and wormcast production than those for CM and RS mixtures. Especially on three times of RH mixture showed the highest growth characteristics compared to the other mixtures. Although both were between 20 and 34 on carbon and nitrogen ratio, the result inferred that the difference on the growth might have been caused by feeding conditions. On the mixtures of cow manure with rice hulls(CM+RH) was significantly higher on values on the conversion rate and conversion efficiency of organic matter to earthworm tissues than the mixtures of cow manure with rice straw(CM+RS). The most concerned point of the mixture of earthworm feed is that high contents of volatile solid and total carbon that increases in conversion efficiency of organic matter to earthworm tissues, and also causes the increase in growth rate and reproductive efficiency. The wormcast could be used as a valuable plant growth medium or soil conditioner for sustainable agriculture and it may be due to their high qualities of physico-chemical properties.
This study was conducted to elucidate the best cutting condition in propagation of Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii in respect of survival rate, rooting rate, and early growth after cutting via process of cutting time, cutting media, cutting type and growth regulators. As for cutting time, rooting rate was 68.3% on April, which was higher than 39.5% on May and 32.5% on June. The best cutting media was stream sand of rooting rate 72.7%. Those of mixed soil and decomposition were 40.1% and 27.5% each. The effect of growth regulators was different according to the kind of cutting media. There was no effect on stream sand media which showed the highest rooting rate, while it was very effective on the media of decomposition of granite, which rooting rate showed the lowest. Hardwood as cutting materials showed somewhat higher survival and rooting rate compared to semi-hardwood. The cutting with hardwood condition to stream sand on April, it is regarded to be the most effective condition for Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii to increase survival and rooting rate. Therefore in this experiment it is considered that the best season cutting is April, and the most useful media and plant materials stream sand, and hardwood respectively.
Increasing of impervious surface resulting from urban development has negative impacts on urban environment. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to estimate and quantify the temporal and spatial aspects of impervious area for study of urban environment. In many cases, conventional image classification methods have been used for analysis of impervious surface fraction. However, the conventional classification methods have shortcoming in estimating impervious surface. The DN value of the each pixel in imagery is mixed result of spectral character of various objects which exist in surface. But conventional image classification methods force each pixel to be allocated only one class. And also after land cover classification, it is requisite to additional work of calculating impervious percentage value in each class item. This study used the spectral mixture analysis to overcome this weakness of the conventional classification methods. Four endmembers, vegetation, soil, low albedo and high albedo were selected to compose pure land cover objects. Impervious surface fraction was estimated by adding low albedo and high albedo. The study area is the Tanchon watershed which has been rapidly changed by the intensive development of housing. Landsat imagery from 1988, 1994 to 2001 was used to estimate impervious surface fraction. The results of this study show that impervious surface fraction increased from $15.6\%$ in 1988, $20.1\%$ in 1994 to $24\%$ in 2001. Results indicate that impervious surface fraction can be estimated by spectral mixture analysis with promising accuracy.

This research was carried out to classify erosion shapes and sea-cliff erosion rates were estimated through periodic field survey in Dundu-ri, Anmyeondo. Based on the results of field measurements using the datum-point, the annual sea-cliff erosion rate was estimated about 25~102cm/yr by point. The erosion rate gradually increases from spring to summer, but tends to decrease slightly in autumn. Specifically, the erosion rate between June and July indicated a rather decreasing trend, but showed a sharp increase between July and September. This was attributed to erosion that proceeds more rapidly than during other periods due to severe rainstorms in summer that had a direct impact on the study area as well as storm surges caused by hurricanes. Afterwards, the sea-cliff erosion rate gradually decreased in autumn, but reflected an increasing trend again from December to January. This was attributed to the mechanical weathering that actively progresses as bed rocks on the sea-cliff undergo repeated freezing and thawing in winter. The seacliff in Dundu-ri is divided into three types according to the erosion shape. First, Type A is observed in the sea-cliff composed of the same bed rocks and hard rock stratum. Second, Type B is found in the sea-cliff with a relatively gentler slope compared to Type A, since weathering material including soil is formed on the surface of the sea-cliff consisting of the same bed rocks and hard rock stratum. Lastly, Type C is observed in the sea-cliff where hard rock stratum is mixed with soft rock stratum. In this case, the soft rock stratum slumps and erodes first by precipitation and wave energy, followed by additional slumping of the exposed hard rock stratum.

Agricultural land reclamation in Saemangeum tidal land project is mostly planned to be completed by 2020. Irrigation water for the land is required to be prepared by that time. However, water quality for the irrigation sources is barely meet the target concentration. This paper described the reduction effect of and policy consideration for best management practices (BMPs) which were fertilizer prescription by soil test (SO#1), mixed application of SO#1 and 3 (SO#2), drainage gate control (SO#3), time-release fertilizer application (SO#4), and control (CT). Reduction of paddy runoff was relatively higher in SO#3 (25%) and SO#1 (27%) while lower in SO#4 (9%) and SO#2 (7%) than that in CT. In addition, farmers promised to follow the BMP guidelines but they didn't because of the several problems caused for the BMPs implementation. Thus, it recommended developing an automated control of irrigation gate and paddy water depth and supporing farmers for NPS pollution control and irrigation water reduction.
