  • The crack under the influence of the higher intensities of the stresses grows and the structure gets collapsed with the time when the crack length reaches to critical value. Therefore, the fracture behavior of a structure in terms of stress intensity factors (SIF) becomes important to determine the remaining fracture strength and capacity of material and structure for avoiding catastrophic failure, increasing safety and further improvement in the design. The robustness of the method has been demonstrated by comparing the numerical results with analytical and experimental results of some problems. XFEM is used to model cracks and holes in structures and predict their strength and reliability under service conditions. Further, XFEM is extended with a stochastic method for predicting the sensitivity in terms of output COVs and fracture strength in terms of mean values of stress intensity factors (SIFs) of a structure with discontinuities (cracks and holes) under tensile loading condition with input individual and combined randomness in different system parameters. In stochastic technique, the second order perturbation technique (SOPT) has been used for the predicting the fracture behavior of the structures. The stochastic/perturbation technique is also known as Taylor series expansion method and it provides the reliable results if the input randomness is less than twenty percentage. From the present numerical analysis it is observed that, the crack tip near to the hole is under the influence of the stress concentration and the variational effect of the input random parameters on the crack tip in terms of the SIFs are lesser so the COVs are the less sensitive. The COVs of mixed mode SIFs are the most sensitive for the crack angles (α=45° to 90°) for all the values of c1 and d1. The plate with the shorter distance between hole and crack is the most sensitive with all the crack angles but the crack tip which is much nearer to the hole has the highest sensitivity.

  • When ammonia ($NH_3$) and hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) in binary mixture gases were supplied to a biofilter packed with biomedia made of polyurethane, PVA, and worm cast. No odor gases were detected on the outlet of the biofilter when $NH_3$ and $H_2S$ were separately supplied to the biofilter at space velocity(SV) of $50h^{-1}$ until inlet $NH_3$ concentration was increased up to 300 ppmv and inlet $H_2S$ to 428 ppmv. While, inlet $NH_3$ concentration maintained at 50 ppmv, inlet $H_2S$ concentration increased from 1 to 489 ppmv, and the removal efficiency of each gas was investigated. After that, $NH_3$ concentration increased step by step such as 80, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 ppmv. $H_2S$ concentration increased gradually when $NH_3$ concentration was set up at each condition. Under each condition, removal efficiency of $NH_3$ and $H_2S$ gas was investigated by analysing the gases sampled from the inlet and outlet of the biofilter. When binary gases were supplied to the biofilter and inlet $NH_3$ concentration was increased from 50 to 300 ppmv, elimination capacity of $NH_3$ increase linearly as inlet loading increased to $11.14g\;N{\cdot}m^{-3}{\cdot}h^{-1}$. However, as inlet $NH_3$ concentration increased over 300 ppmv, both removal efficiency and elimination capacity decreased while inlet loading increased. $H_2S$ removal efficiency was not affected seriously by the simultaneous supply of $NH_3$ when maximum inlet loading of $H_2S$ was under $40.27S{\cdot}m^{-3}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ and maximum inlet loading of $NH_3$ was under $15.25N{\cdot}m^{-3}{\cdot}h^{-1}$.

  • The gangway connection of the articulated high speed railway vehicles (HSRV) is a double wrinkled rubber component to seal the air of the corridor under a range of angular deviations between the carriage end parts. From the results of non-linear structural analysis, one of the severe loading conditions for the connection is mixed mode (rolling+yawing) angular displacements while passing through the small-radius curved siding track of the HSRV depot. In this study, to ensure the safety enhancement of the component, the optimal design for the cross section of that was performed using the Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) method. Nonlinear finite element analysis confirmed that the decreases in the maximum principal strain of the optimized design under rolling and mixed modes are 68% and 39%, respectively, compared to the initial design.

  • Low pressure air flotation (LAF) pilot plant for sludge thickening was installed in Chung Nam N.S. municipal waste water treatment plant to verify its application possibility. Effects of operating conditions such as coagulant dosages and microbubble water ratio on thickening of the mixed sludge were examined. Microbubbles which were generated in the chamber of $1.5kgf/cm^2$ by high speed collision method with foaming agent were used to float sludge. Solid loading of $30kg/m^2/hr$, solid contents in thickened sludge of 60,300 mg/L and SS removal efficiency of 99% were obtained through long period operating LAF in conditions of mixed sludge concentration of 14,400 mg/L, coagulant dosage of 27.6 mg/L, foaming agent addition of 4.0 mg/L and microbubble water injection ratio of 9.7%.

  • Anammox reactor seeded with sewage sludge from RBC reactor and anaerobic granule from full-scale UASB reactor treating distillery wastewater was operated. Mixed granule and suspended sludge in the ammonium oxidizing process were taken and analyzed to investigate microbial community structure by molecular methods such as gene cloning and phylogenetic tree analysis after 250 days of continuous cultivation. The average nitrogen removal rate showed $0.9kg\;N/m^3-day$ after 250 days of continuous operation, then the maximum nitrogen removal rate showd $1.9kg\;N/m^3-day$ when $2.1kg\;N/m^3-day$ of nitrogen loading rate was applied. As results of gene cloning and phylogenetic tree analysis, Three kinds of phylum were found to be Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria and Planctomycetes (anammox bacteria) in mixed granule. Five kinds of phylum were found to be Proteobacteria, Chlorobi, Planctomycetes, Nitrospirae and Verrucomicrobia in suspended sludge. We found planctomycete KSU-1 and putative new anammox bacteria in the reactor. Microbial structure represented different consortia depending on the types of sludge in the anammox reactor.

  • Digestion of a municipal wastewater sludge by the anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) was investigated to evaluate the performance of the ASBR process at a critical condition of high-solids-content fined. The reactors were operated at an HRT of 10 days with an equivalent loading rate of 0.8-1.5 gVS/L/d at 35$^{\circ}C$ The main conclusions drawn from this study were as follows: 1. Digestion of a municipal wastewater sludge was possible using the ASBR in spite of high concentration of settleable solids in the sludge. The ASBRS with 3- and 4-day cycle period showed almost identical high digestion performances. 2. No adverse effect on digestion stability was observed In the ASBRS in spite of withdrawal and replenishment of 30% or 40% of liquid contents. A conventional anaerobic digester could be easily converted to the ASBR without any stability problem. 3. Flotation thickening occurred in thicken step of the ASBRS throughout steady state, and floating bed volume at the end of thicken period occupied about 70% of the working volume of the reactor Efficiency of flotation thickening in the ASBRS could be comparable to that of additional gravity thickening of a completely mixed digester. 4. Solids were accumulated rapidly in the ASBR during start-up period. Solids concentrations in the ASBRS were 2.6 times higher than that in the completely mixed control reactor at steady state. Dehydrogenase activity had a strong correlation with the solids concentration. Dehydrogenase activity of the digested flu형e in the ASBR was 2.9 times higher than that of the flu형e in the control reactor, and about 25 times higher than that of the subnatant in the ASBR. 5. Remarkable increase in equivalent gas production of 52% was observed at the ASBRS compared with the control reactor in spite of similar quality of clarified effluent from the ASBRS and control reactor. The increase in gas production from the ASBRS was believed to be combined results of accumulation of microorganisms, higher driving force applied, and additional long-term degradation of organics continuously accumulated.

  • A biofertilizer, having been deordorized and showing promotive effect on plant growth, was manufactured from the rice straw and hen feces by use of Thermoactinomycetes vulgaris. This strain grew vigorously on rice straw mixed with unsterilized hen feces at $50^{\circ}C,\;pH\;8.0{\sim}8.5$ and moisture content of 60% and got rid hen feces of malodour during treatment. The growth of plant(Brassica raga var. previdis) was experimented on humic volcanic ash soil, using pot in thermostatically controlled greenhouse. The biofertilizer was applied as N-fertilizer and air-dried lien feces or ammonium sulfate were used for comparison with the biofertilizer. The effect on. plant growth was evaluated on the basis of the amount of nitrogen as fertilizer, under a loading of 0.1g N/pot, all samples showed a promotion effect of plant growth. But ammonium sulfate and air-dried hen feces inhibited plant growth at the nitrogen content over 0.2 and 0.4g N/pot, respectively, whereas the biofertilizer showed a good promotion effect on plant growth without growth inhibition even at nitrogen content of 0.8g N/pot.

  • The photocatalytic degradation of trichloroethylene(TCE) in water on various types of$TiO_2$ was studied. Surface properties of $TiO_2$were characterized by XRD, SEM, and BET in our previous work(23) . $TiO_2$from Aldrich has 100$\%$pure anatase, TiO$_2$from KIER has 100$\%$ pure rutile structure, and P25-TiO$_2$from Degussa has mixed structure of anatase(75$\%$) and rutile(25$\%$) . Firstly, optimum conditions for TCE degradation were examined in this study. Results showed that optimum loading amount of catalyst was 0.1 wt% and recirculation flow rate of mixture(distilled water and TCE) was 200 cc/min. Secondly, the effect of $TiO_2$structure on TCE degradation was examined. Results revealed that anatase structure generally has better photocatalytic activity than rutile structure. Especially, mixed structure(Degussa P25-$TiO_2$) has the highest activity due to small particle size and large specific surface area.

  • The purpose of this research was to study the kinetics of a packed bed aerobic biofilm process. Experiments were carried out by feeding an aerated packed bed reactor with a synthetic wastewater. The reactor packed with glass beads as media had a nominal hydraulic detention time of 5 hours. The flow pattern in the reactor was determined by a tracer test using a NaCl solution to be a completely-mixed type. The results of the research showed that the F/M ratio in the reactor was almost constant since the the biomass increased due to the growth of biofilm as the volumetric organic loading increased. It was also proved theoretically and experimentally that packed bed aerobic biofilm process could be analyzed by the kinetics of completely-mixed activated sludge process with sludge recycle.

  • Acoustic Emission(AE) signals are emitted by a sudden release of strain energy associated with material damage. A multi-channels of LeCroy system and piezoelectric pressure transducers are employed for AE measurement to investigate the roles of AE in the propagation of macro cracks as well as the characteris-tics of AE wave in occurrence, amplitude and dominant frequency with changes in macro loading modes. Deduced crack opening volume of micro cracks varied widely and implies that AE events could be caused by crystal dislocations on a small scale and grain boundary movements on a large scale. Amplitude of first arrival AE wave emitted during mode I test was approximately 3 times higher than those from mixed mode test, while the number of AE count in mode I test was only 25% of mixed mode. It may imply that the total energy required for generation of a given fracture surface is similar regardless in change of macroloading modes.
