Clustering and Communications Scheduling in WSNs using Mixed Integer Linear Programming

  • We consider the problem of scheduling communications in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to ensure battery preservation through the use of the sleeping mode of sensors.We propose a communication protocol for 1-hop WSNs and extend it to multi-hop WSNs through the use of a 1-hop clustering algorithm.We propose to schedule communications in each cluster in a virtual communication ring so as to avoid collisions. Since clusters are cliques, only one sensor can speak or listen in a cluster at a time, and all sensors need to speak in each of their clusters at least once to realize the communication protocol. We model this situation as a mathematical program.

  • Network virtualization opens the door to novel infrastructure services offering connectivity and node manageability. In this letter, we focus on the cost-efficient embedding of on-demand virtual optical network requests for interconnecting geographically distributed data centers. We present a mixed integer linear programming formulation that introduces flexibility in the virtual-physical node mapping to optimize the usage of the underlying physical resources. Illustrative results show that flexibility in the node mapping can reduce the number of add-drop ports required to serve the offered demands by 40%.

정비작업 인력 수준 최소화를 위한 발견적 기법 (A Heuristic Algorithm for Minimizing Maintenance Workforce Level)

  • This paper develops an efficient heuristic algorithm for scheduling workforce level that can accommodate all the requested maintenance jobs. Each job has its own release and due dates as well as man-day requirement, and must be scheduled in a non-interrupted time interval, namely, without preemption. Duration of each job is not fixed, but to be determined within given specific range. The objective is to minimize workforce level to complete all the requested maintenance jobs. We show that the problem can be seen as a variant of the two-dimensional bin-packing problem with some additional constraints. A non-linear mixed integer programming model for the problem is developed, and an efficient heuristic algorithm based on bin-packing algorithms is proposed. In order to evaluate goodness of the solution obtained from the proposed algorithm, a scheme for getting a good lower bound for the optimum solution is presented and analyzed. The computational experiment shows that the proposed algorithm performs quite satisfactorily.

  • SThis paper proposes a new dispatch scheduling algorithm in interconnected regional system operations. The dispatch scheduling formulated as mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem can efficiently be computed by generalized Benders decomposition (GBD) algorithm. GBD guarantees adequate computation speed and solution convergency since it decomposes a primal problem into a master problem and subproblems for simplicity. In addition, the inter-temporal optimal power flow (OPF) subproblem of the dispatch scheduling problem is comprised of various variables and constraints considering time-continuity and it makes the inter-temporal OPF complex due to increased dimensions of the optimization problem. In this paper, regional decomposition technique based on auxiliary problem principle (APP) algorithm is introduced to obtain efficient inter-temporal OPF solution through the parallel implementation. In addition, it can find the most economic dispatch schedule incorporating power transaction without private information open. Therefore, it can be expanded as an efficient dispatch scheduling model for interconnected system operation.

수직통합 의사결정을 위한 계량분석모형 (A mathematical planning model for vertical integration)

  • This paper presents a mathematical model for a class of vertical integration decisions. The problem structure of interest consists of raw material vendors, components suppliers, components processing plants, final product (assembly) plants and external components buyers. Economic feasibility of operating components plants instead of keeping outside suppliers is our major concern. The model also determines assignment of product lines and production volumes to each open plant considering the cost impacts of economies of scale and plant complexity. The problem formulation leads to a concave, mixed integer mathematical program. Given the state of the art of nonlinear programming techniques, it is often not possible to find global optima for reasonably sized such problems. We developed an optimization solution algorithm within the framework of Benders decomposition for the case of a piecewise linear concave cost function. It is shown that our algorithm generates optimal solutions efficiently.

  • A novel mixed-integer linear programming model for the short-term scheduling of a sequential multipurpose batch plant is addressed. First, a time slot domain to each unit is introduced. By assigning each time slot to a product, we obtain the production sequence that minimizes makespan. For multiple-unit assignment problem where a few parallel units with the same function exist, production paths are defined for the distinction of the same stage with a different unit. As a second issue, the model adapted for sequence dependent changeover is presented. For a time slot of a unit, if a product is assigned to the time slot and a different product is assigned to the adjacent time slot, the changeover time considering this situation is included. The performance of the proposed models are illustrated through two examples.

An Efficient Throughput Improvement through Bandwidth Awareness in Cognitive Radio Networks

  • This paper proposes a bandwidth-aware localized-routing algorithm that is capable of sensing the available spectrum bands within a two-hop neighboring for choosing the highly opportunistic routes. A mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) is utilized to formulate the optimization problem. Then, the proposed algorithm is used to determine the maximum bandwidth possible of link pairs via a bandwidth approximation process of relaxed variables. Thereby, the proposed algorithm can allow selected routes corresponding to maximum bandwidth possible between cognitive radio (CR) users through link pairs in cognitive radio networks. By comparing the solution values to previous works, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can offer a closed-optimal solution for routing performance in cognitive radio networks. The contribution of this paper is achieved through approximately 50% throughput utilized in the network.

Development of models for the prediction of electric power supply-demand and the optimal operation of power plants at iron and steel works

  • In order to achieve stable and efficient use of energy at iron and steel works, a model for the prediction of supply and demand of electric power system is developed on the basis of the information on operation and particular patterns of electric power consumption. The optimal amount of electric power to be purchased and the optimal fuel allocation for the in-house electric power plants are also obtained by a mixed-integer linear programming(MILP) and a nonlinear programming (NLP) solutions, respectively. The validity and the effectiveness of the proposed model are investigated by several illustrative examples. The simulation results show the satisfactory energy saving by the optimal solution obtained through this research.

  • In the fields of plant layout optimization, the main goal is to minimize the construction cost including pipelines as satisfying all constraints such as safety and operating issues. However, what is the lacking of considerations in previous researches is to consider proper safety and maintenance spaces for a complex plant. Based on the mathematical programming, MILP(Mixed Integer Linear Programming) problems including various constraints can be formulated to find the optimal solution which is to achieve the best economic benefits. The objective function of this problem is the sum of piping cost, pumping cost and area cost. In general, many conventional optimization solvers are used to find a MILP problem. However, it is really hard to solve this problem due to complex inequality and equality constraints, since it is impossible to use the derivatives of objective functions and constraints. To resolve this problem, the PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization), which is one of the representative sampling approaches and does not need to use derivatives of equations, is employed to find the optimal solution considering various complex constraints in this study. The EO (Ethylene Oxide) plant is tested to verify the efficacy of the proposed method.

최적화에 기반을 둔 LAD의 패턴 생성 기법 (Optimization-Based Pattern Generation for LAD)

  • LAD(Logical Analysis of Data)는 Boolean-logic에 기반을 둔 데이터 마이닝 방법론이다. LAD에 의한 데이터 분석 시 중요한 과정은 데이터 집합에 숨겨진 구조적 정보를 패턴의 형식으로 발견해내는 패턴 생성 단계이다. 기존의 패턴 생성 방법은 열거법에 기반을 두고 있어 높은 차수의 패턴을 생성하는 것은 실질적으로 불가능하였다. 본 논문에서는 최적화에 기반을 둔 패턴 생성 방법론을 제안하고 혼합 정수 선형 모형과 SCP(Set Covering Problem)의 두 가지 모형을 제안한다. 기계학습 분야에서 널리 쓰이는 데이터 집합에 대해 제안된 패턴 생성 방법을 이용한 분석 실험을 통하여 기존의 패턴 생성 방법으로는 생성될 수 없는 패턴을 쉽게 생성하는 효율성을 입증하였다.
