  • It's possible for a human to breathe under water, if dissolved oxygen is effectively used. Fish can stay under water using the gill which extracts dissolved oxygen from water. Water includes small amounts of oxygen, so a human needs larger amounts of water to acquire oxygen enough for underwater breathing. The exhalation gas from a human is another method to get higher amounts of oxygen under water. It mainly composes of oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. So, if only carbon dioxide is decreased, the exhalation gas has good characteristics for breathing of a human under water. In this paper, composition of the exhalation gas from a human was analyzed using GC. Based on these results, the synthesized gas was prepared and mixed into water which was used for experimental devices to analyze separation characteristics of dissolved gases from water. Experimental devices included a water pump, a hollow fiber membrane module and a vacuum pump. The effects of pressure and water flow on separation characteristics of synthesized gas were investigated. The compositions of gases separated from water using synthesized gas were investigated using GC. These results expect to be applied to the development of underwater breathing technology for a human.

  • WO$_3$/SnO$_2$ceramics has been suggested as an effective sensing material for monitoring offensive odor or pollutant gases. This work was focussed on improving long-term stability, which has been a principal problem generally taking place in SnO$_2$semiconductor gas sensor. Miniaturized thick film gas sensors were fabricated by screen printing technique. Two types of sensor materials, W doped SnO$_2$and WO$_3$mixed SnO$_2$, were comparatively investigated on those long-term stability and sensitivites to several gases. Small amount of W doping(0.1 mol%) into SnO$_2$largely improved the long-term stability. The W(0.1 mol%) doped SnO$_2$gas sensor had higher sensitivities to both acetone and alcohol compared with WO$_3$(5 wt%) mixed SnO$_2$gas sensor. On the contrary, WO$_3$(5 wt%) mixed SnO$_2$gas sensor showed more superior sensitivity to cigarette smoke due to larger W content.

  • Micro-electronic gas sensor devices were developed for the detection of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), ammonia (NH3), and formaldehyde (HCHO), as well as binary mixed-gas systems. Four gas sensing materials for different target gases, Pd-SnO2 for CO, In2O3 for NOx, Ru-WO3 for NH3, and SnO2-ZnO for HCHO, were synthesized using a sol-gel method, and sensor devices were then fabricated using a micro sensor platform. The gas sensing behavior and sensor response to the gas mixture were examined for six mixed gas systems using the experimental data in MEMS gas sensor arrays in sole gases and their mixtures. The gas sensing behavior with the mixed gas system suggests that specific adsorption and selective activation of the adsorption sites might occur in gas mixtures, and allow selectivity for the adsorption of a particular gas. The careful pattern recognition of sensing data obtained by the sensor array made it possible to distinguish a gas species from a gas mixture and to measure its concentration.

  • This paper describes the information for quantitative simulation of weakly ionized plasma. We must grasp the meaning of the plasma state condition to utilize engineering application and to understand materials of plasma state. $SF_6$ gas is widely used in industrial of insulation field. In this paper, $N_2$ is mixed to improve pure $SF_6$ gas characteristics. Electron transport coefficients in $SF_6-N_2$ mixture gases are simulated in range of E/N values from 70 to 400 [Td] at 300K and 1 Torr by using Boltzmann equation method. The results of this method. which are ionization coefficient, attachment coefficient, effective ionization coefficient, and critical E/N, can be important data to present characteristic of gas for insulation. Specially critical E/N is a data to evaluate insulation strength of a gas and is presented in this paper for various mixture ratios of $SF_6-N_2$ mixture gases.

  • We report and discuss molecular and isotopic properties of hydrate-bound gases from 55 samples and void gases from 494 samples collected during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 204 at Hydrate Ridge offshore Oregon. Gas hydrates appear to crystallize in sediments from two end-member gas sources (deep allochthonous and in situ) as mixtures of different proportions. In an area of high gas flux at the Southern Summit of the ridge (Sites 1248-1250), shallow (0-40 meters below the seafloor (mbsf)) gas hydrates are composed of mainly allochthonous mixed microbial and thermogenic methane and a small portion of thermogenic C2+ gases, which migrated vertically and laterally from as deep as 2-2.5 km depths. In contrast, deep (50-105 mbsf) gas hydrates at the Southern Summit (Sites 1248 and 1250) and on the flanks of the ridge (Sites 1244-1247) crystallize mainly from microbial methane and ethane generated dominantly in situ. A small contribution of allochthonous gas may also be present at sites where geologic and tectonic settings favor vertical gas migration from greater depth (e.g., Site 1244).

  • The luminance and discharge characteristics of ac PDP may be significantly affected by a small amount of impurity gas in working gas. These impurity gases such as O$_2$, O, C and H$_2$ can be mixed in the manufacturing and /or discharge process. In this paper a small amount of impurity gas in acPDP are introduced quantitatively and the relationship between the amount of impurity gas and the luminance/discharge characteristics are investigated. The luminous efficiency decreased seriously with increase in the partial pressure of impurity gases, especially in H$_2$, O$_2$ and CO$_2$. Under the condition of the impurity gas ratio of 2${\times}$10$\^$-3/ for Ar, N2, H$_2$, CO$_2$ and O$_2$, the luminous efficiency decreased about 8%, 8%, 32%, 36% and 50%, respectively.

  • Ignition energy effects of concentration of mixed gas In closed cylindrical vessel(1, 832㎤) are studied. The ignition energy ranged from 25 Joule to 110 Joule, and hidrogen and methane gases were used for flammable gas at stoichiometric condition with oxygen gas and nitrogen gas (N2) was for inert gas, which concentration was maximum 60% . The explosion pressure, temperature, concentration of product gases were calculated. It is found that - The explosion pressure and explosion velocity increase with ignition energy. - The gradience of explosion velocity with ignition energy is steeper than explosion pressure. - The results of calculation are similiar with results of experiment. - NOx is not serious product gas for methane and hydrogen gas, but CO is serious at certain concentration for methane in asphyxiation.

  • The objective of this study is to determine the concentrations of mixed gases by establishing a diagnosis method of a transformer using tunable-wavelength optical infrared sensors. Absorption of infrared light by methane, acetylene, and ethylene gases injected is measured from the outputs of the infrared sensors. Regression analysis equations of the gas concentrations are acquired from their respective measured absorption. The obtained concentrations are as follows: -3-9 % errors above 600 ppm(methane), 3 % errors above 1200 ppm(acetylene), and 10 % errors above 500 ppm(ethylene). The concentration inference equations obtained using the individual gases are applicable when the absorption wavelength bands do not overlap. The results of the fault analysis of a transformer using the Duval triangle method and the tunable infrared gas sensors are as follows: temperature faults with -1-1% errors and energy faults with -7-7 % errors.
