  • A series of novel exomethylene cyclopropyl nucleosides have been synthesized starting from Feist's acid. Classical nucleophilic substitution conditions ($K_2CO_3$, 18-crown-6) of the tosylate 2 as well as Mitsunobu reaction (DEAD, $PPh_3$) of alcohol 1 with pyrimidine bases afforded a series of novel cyclopropyl nucleosides. Compound 4b displayed moderate anti-HBV activity without any cytotoxicity up to $100{\;}{\mu}M$.

  • Novel 4'-trifluoromethyl-5'-norcarbocyclic purine phosphonic acid analogs were efficiently synthesized from commercially available 1,3-dihydroxy cyclopentane (5). Trifluoromethylation was successfully performed by using the Ruppert-Prakash reaction. The purine nucleosidic bases were efficiently coupled by using the Mitsunobu reaction. The synthesized adenosine phosphonic acids analogs 13 and 16 were screened for antiviral activity against human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1). Adenine derivative 13 exhibited significant anti-HIV-1 activity.

  • Fluorescent nucleic acids were prepared utilizing the polymerase extension (PEX) reaction to incorporate fluorescent molecules. 2'-Deoxyuridine triphosphate (dUTP) derivatives possessing pyrene molecules as fluorophores were synthesized using the aqueous-phase Sonogashira coupling between 5-Iodo-dUTP and acetylene-linked pyrene molecules. The incorporation of the pyrene (Py)-labeled deoxyuridine triphosphates (PyU) into DNA by polymerase was evaluated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, demonstrating that the PyU can work as a good substrate for the PEX reaction. The fluorescent properties of the functionalized DNA prepared by the PEX reaction were characterized by steady-state fluorescence measurements. The Py-conjugated DNA showed typical emission spectra of the pyrene, and the DNA with two pyrene molecules connected to each other by a diethylene glycol linker exhibited a broadened emission attributed to the electronic interaction between the Py molecules.

  • Bis(2-thienyl)-diketopyrrolopyrrole having two $Zn^{II}$-cylcens (DPPCy) was synthesized. DPP-aggregates were constructed by self-organization of DPPCy and $dT_n$-DNAs. In the presence of L-ascorbic acid as an electron sacrifice reagent, the DPP aggregates immobilized on a gold electrode exhibit good anodic photocurrent responses as well as cathodic photocurrent responses in the presence of methyl viologen. The anodic photocurrent responses depend on the DNA lengths because of the formation of uniform DPP-aggregates corresponding to the DNA lengths. The present results show that photocurrent responses of the DPP-aggregates can be controlled by DNA lengths and electron sacrifice reagents.

  • Caloglossa species occurs in freshwater streams around Southest Asia. We report it from 2 different riverine sites in Kerala, India. Tetrasporangiate plants were observed in field collections from the Periyar River and Chalakkudy River. The Chalakkudy isolate did not reproduce in culture but the Periyar isolate developed abundant tetrasporangial sori in culture. Many spores were discharged and most were abortive, but some germinated normally, sporelings forming male gametophytes with numerous spermatangial sori and females with many procarps, viable carposporophytes and some nonfunctional (no carpospores) pseudocystocarps. Some carpospores germinated forming new tetrasporophytes. Molecular evidence (28S rDNA and rbcL) placed the Indian specimens close to C. beccarii and C. fluviatilis. Considering the freshwater habitat and morphology of vegetative thalli (blade shape, rhizoid arrangement, and number of rhizoid filament per cell), the Indian specimens should be assigned to C. beccarii.

  • The mangrove algal flora of Guam and the Federated States of Micronesia has been poorly explored. We add to our knowledge of this region by observations of collections from these regions. This paper presents new and additional records of: Rhodophyta-Acrochaetium globosum, Colaconema sp., Caulacanthus indicus, Bostrychia moritziana / B. radicans, B. radicosa, B. simpliciuscula, B. kelanensis and B. tenella, Murrayella periclados, and Caloglossa ogasawaraensis; Chlorophyta-Boodleopsis carolinensis; and Phaeophyceae-Dictyota adnata, Dictyotopsis propagulifera, and Canistrocarpus cervicornis. Most specimens were cultured to investigate their reproductive biology and many specimens were further identified using molecular data. Low molecular weight carbohydrates (dulcitol, sorbitol, and digeneaside) were identified in samples of B. radicosa and B. simpliciuscula. We also present data on manganese-rich deposits found on B. simpliciuscula and B. tenella in culture, possibly formed by epiphytic bacteria.

  • The Cosmic Far-Infrared Background (CFIRB) contains information about the number and distribution of contributing sources and thus gives us an important key to understand the evolution of galaxies. In order to detect CFIRB fluctuation effectively, we have to analyze the confusion carefully which sets a fundamental limit to the deep observations. From our deep observations, we can compare the background fluctuation via observations of regions at different Galactic latitudes. Our comparative study between estimated confusion levels from our observations and those from our model enables us to understand the nature of CFIRB. We introduce our CFIRB observations and report the preliminary results.
