Parametric Study on Water Mist Nozzles for Fire Suppression System Based on CFD Methods

  • Numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the mist flow characteristics through the fire suppression nozzles for the design purposes. The commercial softwares, FLUENT and the fire dynamic simulator, FDS with the proper modelings were chosen as the numerical tools. In order to find optimal conditions in sense of the main performances of nozzles, the spray characteristics were analyzed both inside and outside of the nozzles. Geometric factors of the injecting orifices, i.e., diameter and chamfered angle were chosen as the simulation parameters for design application. From the present numerical results, 1.0c nozzles, whose orifice-diameter was 1 mm, having the chamfered angles were shown as the best performance of the fire suppression.

  • In this research, we evaluated the electrical properties of polycrystalline-gallium-oxIde (Ga2O3) thin films grown by mist-CVD. A 500~800 nm-thick Ga2O3 film was used as a channel in a fabricated bottom-gate MOSFET device. The phase stability of the β-phase Ga2O3 layer was enhanced by an annealing treatment. A Ti/Al metal stack served as source and drain electrodes. Maximum drain current (ID) exceeded 1 mA at a drain voltage (VD) of 20 V. Electron mobility of the β-Ga2O3 channel was determined from maximum transconductance (gm), as approximately, 1.39 ㎠/Vs. Reasonable device characteristics were demonstrated, from measurement of drain current-gate voltage, for mist-CVD-grown Ga2O3 thin films.

Facile Fabrication of Chemical Vapor Samplers with Various Adsorbents for Man-in-Simulant Test(MIST) (Man-in-Simulant Test(MIST) 실험을 위한 다양한 흡착제의 화학증기 흡착용 샘플러 제작)

  • We have developed a cost-effective and facile method to manufacture a pouch-type chemical vapor sampler. Originally, the sampler was developed by U. S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development, and Engineering Center(NSRDEC) to determine the protective capability of individual protective ensembles or Man-in-Simulant Test (MIST). They used a selectively permeable high density polyethylene(HDPE) as front membrane and aluminum/ Nylon barrier film as an impermeable back sheet in order to mimic the actual adsorption process that occurs when the skin is exposed to chemical weapons. However, it costs over twenty dollars per sampler and the minimum of quantity is 2500 per order. In addition, it is inconvenient to employ a variety of adsorbents into the sampler, which could prevent MIST researchers to do various tests for development of MIST methodologies. Here, we report the simple method to manufacture the sampler in a laboratory scale. All the materials we used are easily obtainable and inexpensive. In addition, all the procedures we perform are generally known. We used methyl salicylate(MeS) vapor to be adsorbed into the sampler and employed several different adsorbents to evaluate the performance of samplers. The results obtained by home-made samplers and commercially avaliable one showed no significant differences. Also, MeS vapor was selectively adsorbed into the sampler depending on adsorbents. We conclude that home-made samplers are capable of collecting any kind of chemical vapor for a variety of purposes.

Clonal Propagation in Commiphora Wightii (Arnott.) Bhandari

  • Studies were carried out to standardize and develop a suitable macro-propagation technology for large scale production of superior clonal stock through stem cuttings in Commiphora wightii Arnott (Bhandari), a data deficient medicinal plant of arid region. For the purpose, three experiments were conducted. The first experiment was tried to elucidate the impact of various cutting diameters (0.50-0.75 cm, 0.75-1.00 cm, 1.00-1.50 cm, and >1.50 cm) in combination with varying growing conditions (sunlight, shade house and mist chamber) on shoot sprouting and rooting without using exogenous plant growth regulators. Cutting diameter (size 0.75-1.00 cm) in mist chamber has shown maximum sprouting (90.00%) and rooting (73.33%), primary root (6.67) and secondary root (16.67) followed by 1.00-1.51 cm in mist chamber. Minimum sprouting (40.00%), rooting (33.33%), number of shoot (1.33), primary root (1.00) and number of secondary root (1.00) was recorded in cutting diameter (size >1.50 cm) in sunlight. Second experiment was performed to find out optimum growth regulator concentration of rooting hormone (100, 200, 500 and 1000 ppm) of Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and Indole-3-butyric Acid (IBA) on adventitious root formation on cuttings diameter (size 0.25-0.50 cm) in comparison to control. Maximum rooting percentage (93.33%) was recorded in 200 ppm followed by 500 ppm (86.66%) of IBA as compared to control, which showed only 60 per cent sprouting. Third experiment was performed with newly formed juvenile micro-cuttings treated with varying concentrations of IAA and IBA. The juvenile cuttings (size 6-10 cm, basal dia <0.25 cm) were selected as micro-cuttings. The cuttings treated with IBA (500 ppm) showed 64.30% rooting as compared to other treatments. Results of above experiments indicate that cuttings (size 0.75-1.00 cm dia) may be developed in mist chamber for better performance. While using heavier cuttings, no growth promoting hormones is required however; growth regulator 200 ppm concentration of IBA rooting hormone was observed optimum for promoting macro-propagation in stem cuttings of lower diameter class (0.25-0.50 cm).

Effects of Jinyeosoo Clean Mist on the Improvement of Facial Skin in Middle-aged Women (진여클린미스트를 이용한 중년여성의 안면피부개선 효과)

  • In this study, 20 middle-aged women aged from 35 to 55 were studied from October 12, 2020 to November 15, 2020 to find out the effects of improvement of facial skin of Jinyeosoo Clean Mist. Among the 20 participants, 10 were divided into experimental group and 10 control group. The Janus facial skin scope system (PSI Co.) used on the skin to measure pore, wrinkles, elasticity, UV pigmentation, and skin tone observed depending the difference in light sources. The facial examination took place 10 minutes after cleansing to stabilize and a total of 4 examinations were carried out after every week of using Jinyeosoo Clean Mist for 4 weeks. For statistical processing, SPSS statistics program 21.0 was utilized to compare the mean averages of pre-experimental and post-experimental data from the above two groups - the experimental group that used Jinyeosoo Clean Mist (hydrogen ion mist) 1 and 2 and the control group that did not use the subject products - and the corresponding sample t-test was used. As a result of the analysis, the group that used Jinyeosoo Clean Mist showed difference in pores (t=3.280, p<.05), wrinkles (t=4.353, p<.01) and elasticity (t=3.003, p<.05), skin tone(t=3.280, p<.01) under the statistical significance level.

Development of Defogger Equipped with a Roller Horsehair Brush

  • In order to remove fog often causes various troubles in our daily lives, the novel defog blower equipped the roller brush made of recycled horse's mane hair was developed. This work presents the overview of new defog devices and the experimental data obtained at two different kinds of defogging experiments. In the model experiment carried out at the enclosed cleanroom ($W5.9m{\times}L5.1m{\times}H2.4m$) targeted a vinyl house, fog was dissipated in less than 30 seconds in case with wind entrainment and two minutes 45 seconds in case without wind entrainment after running of the newly designed defog blower. When the demisting blower was run in a duct, it has an excellent mist sweeping qualities as well as a great removal effect for the background particles (89.5% and 65.4% scavenging rates for fine and coarse particles, respectively). It can be therefore said that the mist eliminator presented in this paper is ideal for use in the sealing space like a vinyl house and the industrial sites where required to remove both harmful mist and particle.

Thermal Numerical Simulation on Fire Suppression Characteristics through Mobile Mist Spray Nozzles (이동식 미분무수 노즐의 소화 특성에 대한 수치 시뮬레이션)

  • In the present study, the numerical investigation has been carried out to see the effects of water mist sprays on the fire suppression mechanism. The special-purposed program named as FDS was used to simulate the interaction of fire plume and water mists. This program solves the fire-driven flows using LES turbulence model, the mixture fraction combustion model, the finite volume method of radiation transport for a non-scattering gray gas, and conjugate heat transfer between wall and gas flow. The computational domain was composed of a rectangular space dimensioned as $L{\times}W{\times}H=4.0{\times}4.0{\times}2.5\;m^3$ with a mist-injecting nozzle installed 1.0 m high from the fire pool. In this paper, two types of nozzles were chosen to compare the performance of the fire suppression. Numerical results showed that the nozzle, type A, with more orifices having smaller diameters had poorer performance than the other one, type B because the flow injected through side holes deteriorated the primary flow. The fire-extinguishing time of type A was 2.6 times bigger than that of type B.

Bandgap Control of (AlxGa1-x)2O3 Epilayers by Controlling Aqueous Precursor Mixing Ratio in Mist Chemical Vapor Deposition System (미스트화학기상증착시스템의 전구체 수용액 혼합비 조절을 통한 (AlxGa1-x)2O3 에피박막의 밴드갭 특성 제어 연구)

  • We investigated the growth of $(Al_xGa_{1-x})_2O_3$ thin films on c-plane sapphire substrates that were grown by mist chemical vapor deposition (mist CVD). The precursor solution was prepared by mixing and dissolving source materials such as gallium acetylacetonate and aluminum acetylacetonate in deionized water. The [Al]/[Ga] mixing ratio (MR) of the precursor solution was adjusted in the range of 0~4.0. The Al contents of $(Al_xGa_{1-x})_2O_3$ thin films were increased from 8 to 13% with the increase of the MR of Al. As a result, the optical bandgap of the grown thin films changed from 5.18 to 5.38 eV. Therefore, it was determined that the optical bandgap of grown $(Al_xGa_{1-x})_2O_3$ thin films could be effectively engineered by controlling Al content.

  • Nowadays, Water Mist Fire Extinguishing System is increasingly used in maritime field for various application. The fire extinguishing capability of the system should be verified by hydraulic calculation in the same manner as the conventional water based fire extinguishing system such as sprinkler system. water spray system and etc. Additionally, the review of effectiveness of friction loss calculation method used for hydraulic calculation is needed because the pipe flow characteristic of its piping system has higher Reynolds number than that of the conventional system. In this paper the review work was carried out based on the NFPA Code 750.

Effects of Artificial Acid Mist on Leaf Injury and Surface Wettability of Several Broad-Leaved Species (인공산성연무(人工酸性煙霧)의 처리(處理)가 몇 활엽수종(闊葉樹種)의 엽피해(葉被害)와 엽표면(葉表面)의 친수성(親水性)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • To seek effective methods for evaluating air pollution and acid rain injury, artificial acid mist(pH 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5) and ground water(pH 6.5) were treated on the potted seedlings of Ligustrum obtusifolium, Cercis chinensis, Hibiscus syriacus and Sophora japonica. Leaf chlorophyll contents, characteristics of leaf-injury, wettability-measurement of diameter of water-droplets on the leaf surface-among treatments were investigated. The results were summarized as follows. 1. Chlorophyll contents of Ligustrum obtusifolium and Hibiscus syriacus measured on June 3 were highest in pH 2.5 plot, but those of Cercis chinensis and Sophora japonica were relatively low level. Chlorophyll contents of Ligustrum obtusifolium measured on August 24 was highest in pH 2.5 plot, but those of Cercis chinensis, Hibiscus syriacus and Sophora japonica were highest in the control. 2. Changes of chlorophyll contents with acid mist treatments were differed among tree species. 3. For all the tested species, leaf injury(injured leaf number and rate, and injured leaf area) increased with decreasing pH levels of acid mist. 4. Leaf tissue injury seemed to be related with the wettability of the leaf surface. Measurement of diameter of water-droplets on the leaf surface might be useful criteria for acid rain or acid mist injury for the glabrous leaved species, such as, Cercis chinensis, Sophora japonica, etc.
